      Hi Doddy! I am looking to upgrade my fork on my 2008 Kona Caldera. It has a 100 mm of travel and I am looking to get a longer travel fork. I am most worried about the BB height. The BB height is 300 mm right now. Can you give me some geometry numbers, some suggestions on forks, and what bike group would you categorize it as. Like enduro. #askgmbntech

      Hey Doddy & GMBN Tech guys, thanks for featuring my question - I only do basic jibs, 2-foot huck to flats & drops, nothing that extreme (like Blake) so, I really have no clue what happened to those hubs 🤣 Anyway, I already purchased a DT Swiss hub, and it works like magic!

    I've destroyed two Microspline hubs this year (got warranty on both) on a Yamaha PW-X2 Ebike. The first one was a Shimano Deore hub, this one lasted about 1000km, and then it started creaking like crazy under torque. That was replaced with a Deore XT FH-M8110-B version, which lasted about 20-30km (two rides) before it started creaking. Finally had enough and got a DT Swiss 240 Hybrid hub (reinforced for Ebikes), has about 500km on it now, and still no issues with it. The only issue I had that it required another wheel to be built and a new rotor because it meant going from CL to 6 bolt.

    Another great video Doddy. I always thought the answer to a Sram/Shimano cockpit was having to use a 22mm clamp for the shifter.
    Also in answer to the request for a longer dropper post, you're correct that there are quite a few 200mm droppers, including the latest Fox Transfer (although Crank Brothers doesn't seem to be one of them; the Highline maxes out at 170mm). If every millimetre counts, the Oneup Dropper 210mm is probably the best option.

    Wasn't using all my travel on my 130 Revelation and it felt harsh over small bumps, more sag just made it feel unsupported.
    Removed 2 of the 3 factor fit tokens and it felt much better.
    I've since added the 2021 piston mod and gone to 140 airshaft and removed the last token.
    I now use a decent amount of travel for the half arsed attempt at aggressive riding I do and it feels pretty good.
    Still not as good as those slow mo's GMBN have of Neil and Blake sending it down rough sections and the fork just gliding up and down with the bars steady. I'd love me some of that.

    From the south of the Philippines here. There's little to none in the way of dedicated bike parks, but the massive countryside is essentially like living in a trail center. Spoilt for choice. More relaxed and friendly attitudes towards bikes and cyclists too as a whole, both for road and mtb. None of the angry cyclist-hating drivers I often read about in Western countries. And no winter riding worries too. Be good to see you guys here (and the GCN crew as well come to think of it). The South has tons of hidden gems, especially because a lot of outsiders think it's dangerous here (generally it's not).

    Shimano FH-MT510-B #microspline hub: I have no idea how, but it came loose while taking the rear wheel off my Orbea Laufey 2020, less than a month after purchase. Put it back on, a few rides later it started creaking like crazy, until it got stuck while descending some gnarly trail. I had to get the wheel off, and used the axle to gently unlock it. When I got home I disassembled it, found it was full of oxidation. Cleaned it, re-greased it, creaking was still there, plus one of the pawls developed some slipping, until the whole thing was unusable.
    Luckily Orbea replaced the whole rear wheel, which i haven’t used yet since while waiting for replacement I pulled the trigger on a pair of Hunt Endurowide, which have made my Laufey more lively especially on the climbs, and a hell of a lot louder on the descent. OEM wheels are 2.6kg heavy, the Hunts are around 2.1, and that’s a difference that can really be felt.

    #AskGMBN how much of a difference does a goatlink (derailleur extension) make on the shifting performance? What modifications to the setup would you make if you used one (B tension, H and L screws, cable tension)?

    • @chiefsilverback
      @chiefsilverback 3 роки тому

      The GoatLink lets you run a larger cassette than the mech is specced for, other than that it makes no difference to shift performance. I installed one so I could run an 11-50 Sunrace cassette with an 11 speed XT mech and it works pretty much flawlessly. Every so often I'll find I can't shift out of 1st and it's because the b tension has released a bit, so I give it a quick tweak and away I go. I should probably throw some loctite on their and fix that problem. In terms limit screws and cable tension it makes no difference. I guess if your derailleur hanger was misaligned it would multiply the issue, but assuming your hanger is straight and true they are great at what they're designed for.

    Drop a spacer (and remember to add 5psi from your perfect psi) in your fork if you aint doing 10ft hucks to flat. Like Doddy says these modern forks are made for aggressive riding, if your doing light trail/ XC you wont use it all, probably not even the last say 30-35%.
    Plus any 35mm+ stanchion fork is made to be jumped and dropped hard it's just what they are designed for hence the extra weight. It's just so many people buy a trail bike as a do it all or for learning, when they are intended for much, much more so the forks seem near impossible to use most of the travel.

    @Mircospline Hubs
    It looks like there is a lot of grease in there. That would be incorrect maintenance. Freehubs only function correctly with minimal grease.
    Also the DT Swiss 350 is cheaper and also has the ratchet system.
    And this issue should be independent of the mircospline system (although I prefer the XD-body)

    • @tommycooperfish
      @tommycooperfish 3 роки тому

      Yeah that confused me thought all DT Swiss wheels are star ratchet but the 350 does indeed use a 3 pawl system, mine are old style HG hub body so hoping it does not happen on mine but I've heard others (they come OEM on a bunch of entry-mid range trail bikes) say they can strip pretty badly.
      TF tuned are the DT Swiss reps for the UK I believe so shoot them a message and see if they could rebuild under warranty if authorised (believe its 24 months warranty from new) if OP has it.

      @@tommycooperfish the standard 350s should be ratchet. the 370 are 3paw.

    #askgmbntech Hello. I am thinking of switching to clips for the season 2022. This year getting new bike (canyon grand canyon 8) and stamp2 pedals and just wanna make sure that clips would be better. I will probably buy new crankbrothers Mallet E shoes (couse I walk a lot off the bike and do a lot of miles on it) and Mallet DH pedals (Superbruni edition. Looks awesome) couse I love bigger platform pedals and feel safer that way. So I just wanna know if that would be "pairable" becouse I am woried thet shoes would just grip to much on the pedals or even won't sit on the pedal the right way.
    Thank you so much. You are awesome.🤘

      It's all your technique, flat pedals are not supposed to vertically attach to your shoes, that's the point of not clipping in. You should probably practice pedaling though, since peddling experience doesn't help much on a mountain bike unless you're trying to sell it.

    I know the geometry question has been asked a million times, but could you go in depth as to how proportions that are outside of the norm might affect bike fit? I have a long inseam for my height and a short torso (5'9" and a 33inch inseam). Different bike shops tell me I should both size up and size down with long legs. What I've personally worked out is I need a high stack and reach that's longer than a normal medium but shorter than a normal large. Further, I've found I really like long chainstays but a lot of my shorter legged friends think I'm nuts and love them as short as possible. I'm wondering if there's a reason for that.

      Add low-speed compression damping on the 30% sag air pressure. Try an intermediate pressure too, like 25% or so.

    #askgmbntech what is the difference between a shock that's mounted upside-down like the new Norco optic and one that's right side up like the trek slash? Any insights into the tune or leverage ratio that makes them want to mount it that way?

  • @fynnhansmann8027

    Simple: like almost every body else, you bought a bike, which has, if set up correctly, about 2 to 3cm unnecessary suspension for you. So don't worry it's just the way it is.

    #askgmbntech why don't we see forks that have more travel then 200mm, it looks like there would be space on the bike for more travel like 220mm or even 250mm

    So piggybacking off the question of “why no double crowns?” Why are we not seeing double crown forks with more travel? It seems like the 10mm of extra travel from a single crown to a double crown is practically nothing so why not longer?

    Hey Doddy loving the show, am rebuild a 99 Santa Cruz heckler, using modern components but looking to find out what you think the best 1" 1/8 forks are with at least 100mm and preferably 20mm pull through.. Gonna be used for xc, freeride and some mild dh. #AskGMBNTech #askgmbntech

    Hey Doddy. Love the show. I’ve been a fan since MTBUK. My everyday ride is just a few metres from my house but it’s a type of clay that packs the tires in five minutes if it rains. Ergo... end of ride. I’ve asked everyone if they have a solution. Your my last resort. Can you help me?

    #askgmbntech I have a hardtail mtb, and under certain pedaling conditions (which is unidentifiable), sometimes some component creaks or clicks. Previously I had that was from another bike but that had a loosened bottom bracket. However this new one has no play in the bottom bracket whatsoever. I have reviewed all those identifying videos off of GMBN and GCN, but handle and steering components are solid, as well as seat and rear cassette and hub components. Am I missing somewhere to look for? I am from India and the bike in question is one Montra Rock 1.1 (not popular outside the country I assume).

    Hi, i recently tried to bring my old hardtail back to life, but struggled to get the front derailleur to work properly (despite watching your videos :/).
    Its a 3x9 deore xt drivetrain with cheaper shimano shifters and a new large chainring on the alivio crankset. Now the problem is, that i cant get the front derailleur to cover all the gears. On the biggest chainring it keeps rubbing against the chain unless i put a lot of tension on the cable. Thats when shifting quality between the smaller gears suffers. What could be the problem? Do some chainrings stand out further and thus increase the distance between the gears?
    Thanks a lot and merry christmas from Germany!

    It went together easily in less than an hour. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.

    #GMBNTech #AskGMBNTech Doddy, love the channel and have been a subscriber since day one. What is your take on MTB apparel? Has it progressed at the same pace as bicycle tech? I am finding it difficult these days to get a "minimalist" kit. Any advice on who makes normal trail riding gear with minimal straps, buckles, lightweight and stretch? Thank you!

    Hey Doddy, I will be living in a city for a few months, which does not have a lot of good MTB-spots but some pumptracks and Skateparks. I usually ride a lot of downhill in bikeparks, now I still want to be active and ride and I am looking for the best choice of bike for the city for pumptracks, fooling around and just riding around. I like dirt bikes, but I hate it that you cannot ridem them around like a normal MTB. Now I am thinking of getting a hardtail trail bike. Can a hardtail be as much fun as a dirt bike on a pumptrack or in a skatepark ? I am thinking of something like the canyon stoic, which recently came out. #askgmbntech

    #askgmbntech I have a 120mm Rock Shox Revelation fork on my 2019 Marin Rift Zone 3 that I cannot get to bottom out on the hardest of rides. I have even taken all of the air out and tried to compress it all the way down..still no dice. I have recently removed 2 of the 4 volume spacers, but the way I understand it, those will only give me a more linear feel in my travel and won't do much to increase or decrease the travel. What else can I do?
