What a wizard. He's got tons of valuable knowledge that is slowly getting lost to time with most car guys. It's been nice to see a sort of resurgence of carby stuff recently in the industry. This was awesome getting to just listen and learn, thanks to both of you.
Mechanics still get taught carburettors at trade school. Even diesel mechanics like me!

@@ChristopherHallett Here in the Netherlands they haven't learned anything about carburetors for years. When my eldest son asked his automotive engineering teacher 6 years ago for an explanation about carburetors, he got this answer"Carburetors are no longer used, so buy a moped if you want to play with carburettors”. My son was very disappointed. So I got out my textbooks, and we're about to start rebuilding his first engine for his classic Mini.
I think it is a great pity that little attention is paid to the older technology these days. When I look around me, there are still a lot of cars and motorcycles that use this technique
That's why I'm glad that attention is paid to carburetors here.
I have been fighting the pop on low throttle transition for 2 years and just found out the real reason. You missed to check one extremelly important point when you did the setup. The position of the throttle blade at idle position in relation to the progression circuit. I did find it in only one Weber book even though it so important. The throttle blade must barely block the first progression hole at idle. As soon as the blade moves it needs to open up the first progression hole. The book says to notch the throttle blades to achieve this. It will enable you to go smaller with idle jet and pump jet, get much better transition and fuel economy. This is also the reason why the weber setup procedure tells you to set the throttle blade stop at 1/2 or 1/4 turn. As soon as you have to deviate from that the throttle blade position is wrong in relation to the progression holes. If you are just slightelly off you can also enlarge the first progression hole by 0.1mm but that is not reversible so better notch the blades as they are available. There are even different angles of blades available for exactly that reason.
Getting a decent run-down on webbers from Isaac, for someone like me whose carb knowledge is centered around bikes, is invaluable. Please pass on our thanks to Isaac, really really appreciate it.
This is a great episode. I saw this young man on MCM dealing with a VW. He is extremely knowledgeable but not arrogant. His explanation of what is going on with the carbs in relation to driveability, idle, cam etc is direct and factual. As an old school carb guy, I am across what he is talking about. 10/10.

I love the mechanical "complex, but simple" abilities of carburetors. But this explains why EFI is necessary.

Tunning Carbs it's kind of a craft art mixed with a lot of knowledge and practice fighting to get it right. Cheers to Isaac for that!

reminds me of my old man tuning/working on weber 48ida on my rx3 back in the day... he wrote workshop manuals for gmh but never lost his old school tuning talents!

Thats an absolute art to do. I sometimes tune motorcycle carbs but this is so much more in depth.
Isaac needs his own channel if he doesn't already. Really good on camera, loads of knowledge and everyone would like to see it I'm sure.

Funny I was born in the 80s grew up helping tune a tc cortina with downdraught Webber and blowing the dust out of a Sega system cartridge. Could so relate Isaac's comment.

Great stuff! There isn't enough in-depth info on tuning carbies (that aren't on V8s) on youtube, this is a huge help to me personally, Isaac is a legend.
If you're keen to keep the webers and want total control over the timing, have a look at the Megajolt EDIS system. I put it in my twin carb'd Subaru and it works very well. It just controls spark with some other aux inputs/outputs for sensors, gives you control over the entire range of load vs RPM conditions.
Haltech still make ignition-only computers, I feel like if Benny was going to computerise the ignition, he'd go that way.

I found a video of yours just the other day building the Sigma. I have spent the whole afternoon on my, to Smart TV to watch every episode made so far. Great build although I rather like builds to original car this was a great afternoon and evening watching your work. I'm an old Chrysler/Mitsubishi nut. Too old to now be able to do rebuilds like you do but not too old to collect scale models and paraphernalia. My scale model collection is nearing 2000 models just of Mitsubishi cars. Not easy when they are not on top of many models makers list. Australian model companies are not even interested. A company called Hi-Story have recently released 1:43 scale models of the Sigma, Colts, L300/Delica, Legnam, Galant, Diamante based on our Magna and Lancer. Prices however are a bit too much for my collection at $100.00 a model. My dream before my accident at work was to be able to have a big shed to house my models and a few real Mitsubishi cars and the collection of brochures of every model released in OZ so far. Unless I win the dam lotto it has come to an end and is why I enjoy what you and many like you are doing so save and restore so many great Mitsubishi cars. Thank You.

I would recommend anyone thinking of going twin side draughts to pick up some Dellorto DHLA emissions carbs from an Alfa - they're cheap and some carbie wiz on the internet figured out a jetting where they pretty much tune themselves for idle>main circuit progression. I've chucked them on a few different Corolla motors from hot to stock and I've always been amazed at how little work I had to put in to get great driveability.

Hi! Woke up at 3 this morning thinking about something you said you want to do to the Sigma in your video. You talked about installing SE front and rear seats and wanted the rear seat to recline. Also you were talking about putting better speakers in for sound. Your probably aware but it woke me up, when you install the reclining SE back seat you loose about 4” to the parcel shelf. I remember trying to find speakers for my SE it was hell back in the late 70’s.

A dying art, the late 80s early 90s was about the last of the carbies.
Any mechanic who was 30 back then has retired or is about to, and there is very few people with the skills or interest in playing with carbies anymore.
Love your work Issaac, and to everyone else, look after this young fella and learn everything you can from him.

Doing a Re-graph of the dizzy can solve a lot of timing parameter issues
Spot on mate! Re-graphing a dizzy can helped tremendously with my retro encabulator, allowed me to spot a malfunction in three out of my six hydrocoptic marzel vanes. Fortunately the ambifacient lunar wane shaft was running true, so no side fumbling for me.

I had to do this on my father triple Weber hemi engine. Was a shite of a job 😅 but awesome when you get results!
With all this painstaking work, nothing and I mean not even efi itb's sound as good as a set if Webber's on a 4cl, just love it

Once you have learned what sound to listen during the carb tuning you just cannot stop doing it. I constantly evaluate all the small dirt bikes the kids ride in our streets. I even give them tips sometimes.
It doesn't take long playing about with carbs before you can hear what they're doing. And smelling the mixture out of the exhaust.

Watching you tune was intriguing and I’m here to say that cruise and part throttle looked to be spot on in the end but dude there is no way in my 50+ years that naturally aspirated engines make power at 10-11 AFR! I will personally tell you that engine will make peek power between 12.8-13.2 AFR at WOT. Now if it was boosted we run safe at 11.8-12.2 at WOT or a tad richer to cool the cylinders. Also have all your timing in by 3500RPM 32-36 deg! Great to see you playing old school and showing what it used to be like! Can’t wait to see you in the states 💯👍🏼👌🏼🇦🇺🇺🇸

I spent so many hours on my Datsun 1600s back in the 90's tuning Webers. Was a great day when I finally got Ric Shaw to fit EFI. So much better than stuffin around with Webers🤣
A trip back to the past when I had a Datto with a very warm L18 and 45 DCOEs. Frustrating to get right, but when they are, there's nothing better.

Fuel injection vs carbs is like CDs vs vinyl. The imperfections and compromises are what makes both carbs and vinyl more endearing somehow. Technically, it's not "better", but how can it be if you don't love it as much?
Weber's. You either become an expert or pay one to fix it. It's great fun. Still going through it.

At 5:30 says it all.
If you go larger cam with more overlap and duration between inlet and exhaust, you defiantly warrant more compression.
Thats one of the bonuses of running a bigger cam shafts, you can run way way more compression, with more advance timing.
Im at 11.5:1 compression on a 8000rpm cam on twin DCOE's.
