Although I'm from the UK, rather than the US (so this film was always _The Big Boss_ here), I found out about the alternate title _Fists of Fury_ from a documentary about martial arts films. I later found out that this film was supposed to have been called _The Chinese Connection_ (as it shares certain plot similarities, as well as a similar title, to the then-recently-released _The French Connection_ starring Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider) and that _Fist of Fury_ would be retitled _Fists [plural] of Fury_ in the States, but somewhere along the line someone switched the titles so _The Big Boss_ became _Fists of Fury_ whilst _Fist of Fury_ became _The Chinese Connection._
Conversely, although since the US DVD releases in 2008 went to using the English titles used elsewhere globally (i.e. _The Big Boss_ and _Fist of Fury)_ prior to that it was confusing to *us* when people talked about _Fists of Fury_ and _Fist of Fury_ interchangeably when technically the two were completely different films.

@Texy88 what a mix up. I remember having the vhs bruce lee collection. 4 tapes titled Game of death, Chinese connection, return of the dragon, and fists of fury. Only in the late 2000s have I first noticed the titles change.

Don't forget that the Warehouse Fight Scene had a deleted scene when originally Bruce Lee picks up the saw and impales it on one of the thugs' head. It was deemed too graphic back then and there's a still shot of that scene.

I disagree , the added scenes improved the story a lot including the family scenes and the final bordello scene , it gave a us a new perspective on the Big boss, the sound track was terrible I'm not a big fan of the mandarin OST .
The riverside scene was far more emotional with added footage and gave the character a far more emotionally charged scene as did a lot of the missing footage.
it was clearly cut to reduce Tiens screen time fighting and for pacing .

    • @joshbaker1581
      @joshbaker1581  11 місяців тому +4

Actually to be fair I do think Bruce's scream by the riverside adds a bit more intensity to the scene and makes for a less jarring edit, it just didn't come to mind as an noteworthy improvement whilst I was writing the review.

I also saw The Mandarin Cut at Prince Charles Cinema and it was a very facinating experience. The feel of the auditorium really helped. I really enjoyed the scenes that got discovered, especially seeing Nora Miao's few extra scenes. I was brought up with the Cantonese print that was shown on Channel 4 and I really preffered that edit with the Pink Floyd music in parts.
I think I have seen this film the most so it was a very poignant moment in the new scenes to see the main cast together, it felt like a new film if that makes sense, because I was so familiar with the versions we have seen.
I agree with you, the Prostitute scene later in the film was quite surreal, especially the camera point of view, no music, of Cheng choosing a lady.
It was a shame we never got the Saw In The Head sequence.
Being a big fan of the film, there were a few other scenes that didn't appear, such as Mei saying goodbye to Cheng and his Uncle as they leave, and then the sunrise shot.
The Cart sequence was quite disappointing but it definitely looked like it was shot at GH studios as it felt like a set backdrop from Fist of Fury!
Still a great film for me and I am so fortunate that we now have The Mandarin Cut. Can't wait to see it again on physical media.

The saw scene never existed, it’s pretty obvs it doesn’t. 1: it’s 50 years ago, still no show is the first clue ha. 2: it’s clearly just a publicity still is all of the filming of that fight scene. I’m talking the scene that’s actually in the film we have all seen since forever, the director simply did a Hitchcock. He shows u BL holding a saw and then attack but leaves audience to fill in the gaps no contact with head ever happens!! This is I’m afraid the reality of the matter. No saw scene in the head was filmed, certainly ever released.

I agree with some of your points. But as a Chinese person watching, it felt wrong that Bruce Lee and everyone was speaking Mandarin. Bruce Lee was not a Mandarin speaker. If the film is a representation of the forthcoming Blu-Ray set, then there are some serious quality control issues. I noticed that for something that they billed as 'restored' the colours on the print fluctuated at times.
So one moment the colours look bright and vibrant. Then for a few moments it's then looking 'washed out' and 'faded' in places. They also appear to have not removed the original Chinese and English subtitles at times. If I was buying the boxset I would be expecting something better in terms of overall quality than what was shown at the Prince Charles Cinema. Yes I also watched it there.

The film was shot without sound and released in Mandarin in 1971, However, yes, Bruce only spoke Cantonese; the (shorter) version in that language didn’t come out until the early ‘80s.
It would have been interesting if subtitle removal (using AI) was deployed (I’m thinking of ‘Raining in the Mountain’). Perhaps certain criteria is required for it to work properly?
It probably could have benefited from further cleaning (including the removal of cue marks at reel changes), but at least it’s being offered in some form (and a new transfer as opposed to DigiBeta).

Bruce's one Inch punch to the head In the garden?. Dispatching the two thugs He Kicks In the Grown while eating the Prawn Crackers?. Saw to the head scene?. Finding the bodies In the Ice, The guys cutting the bodies up with the saw?. And throwing the parts into the Ice maker?. Bruce walking from the bed to the back of the chair (Filmed from the back) naked with the first prostitute?. I am soooooooooooooooooo glad I saw this as a Workprint, In a Private Cinema (Closed on a Wednesday In the 70's) And all of His others as well. Let's hope that the 50th Year addition of Enter the Dragon, Is put back together with all the missing scenes as well.
