Naval guns were used on the earliest tanks because Britain had a bunch of them in storage and no guns designed specifically for tanks yet existed.
I recommend restarting and focus on the very fundimentals: engine, suspension, chassis, weight reduction tech... Build a reliable vehicle first then start looking at armor and firepower upgrades. The early tanks' worst enemy will be themselves.

These were quite light guns among the line of naval guns. These were not the main guns a ship would carry. They were the smaller secondary or tertiary guns used against small craft like torpedo boats.
IIRC the first guns on these tanks were older design naval guns. These were in storage after removal and replacement with newer designs. Since they were available they got used.
There were twi tank types used early on. Gun tanks to blast pillboxes and tough fortifications. And machine gun armed tanks to fight enemy soldiers. One was called male the other female.

If you go to the diplomacy screen for the UK, you can purchase the rival tank for reverse engineering. Also, the other nations do start requesting tank purchases at some point, but you may need to make new designs and sell them to the UK.

drew like you've said tanks op not because they glass cannons that fire nukes, they op cuz they're mobile bunkers that you can't do anything about them, so maybe it'd be better prioritise armour or mobility instead of firepower?

Tanks are op because they are big guns that can move. Mobility and firepower are the most important aspects.
Armour is just to facilitate mobility (so you can move while being shot at) but that is pointless if you can't move at all.
