I have a theory about Rental, maybe Umi has maladaptive daydreaming disorder or something similar and the game is just in her head. Umi probably imagined herself going into the cabin and seeing all those weird things, the demon seems like something a kid might think up if they're in a new, unfamiliar place. Kids often 'make up' scary stuff in their heads to justify their fear of something (a monster under their bed or in their closet, ghosts hiding in the shadows, etc.) Maybe Umi was scared or unnerved by the cabin and made up the demon to explain why she was afraid, even if she didn't actually go into the cabin. But hey, that's just a theory!
Considering the ending scene, I really like this theory! It would make sense that Umi would have daydreamed the entire interaction considering how creative and surreal it is.
Animal crossing themed horror games are very scarce but if you want a suggestion for any Nintendo horror fan game in general I recommend the Mario the music box series, those games are classics
12:35 A theory I read once was that at the beginning, before the game, the game would simply play like Animal Crossing. The players/humans would go around doing things on the island, and the villagers/animal people would... do their own thing, idk. Eventually, however, the humans might have wanted more and made too much, which ended up getting rid of the animals somehow (probably doing off with them to take their land). Fast forward a couple of years (which would explain the time travel tag on the steam page) and rock guy helps the animals get their revenge on the humans by recruiting you, and the game commences. Tldr: before this game it was just regular Animal Crossing before the humans got too greedy, leading up to the events of the game.
Almost forgot to add: this was a very interesting video! I really like the pacing and playthroughs for it's calm, yet intriguing style! I'm going to go binge watch more of your channel :] (I also added two instances of before too close together, whoops)
I do remember at least two more Animal Crossing horror games like this. One was about the museum and another had Tom Nook as the main villain. Unfortunately, I don't remember their names and can't find them anymore. Pleasant video by the way, glad to have you back.
My favorite part was when soda girl said, "I am the soda, girl".
And split soda all over the place
