Thanks for the shout out, I was mainly just disappointed with Tech Admin and how they left Geof Collins treat him. Like it or not CPJ is one of the greatest and it would be good to have him at practice and back at some games. I’m glad Todd Stansburry got the boot for allowing this pony show to go on.

I think what the misses is that Todd might not have wanted to fire Paul. Why mess with success? But the "big donors" wanted a change. Todd might have felt he would jeopardize his funding sources, already stretched, if he didn't go along. And the rest is history.

Although CPJ did mention that CBK made a negative comment about “small ball,” he did say that he believes CBK has us going in the right direction, and that the future looks bright!

Re: the 18:59 mark. I actually did have Paul admit he made a mistake - one of his first play calls in a tight game at Southern, when after the game he said he had the wrong QB in for a quarterback throwback (the same play Qua was supposed to throw to JT in 2016 at Athens). Aside from that, let's review the roster PJ left for Collins. Four starting offensive lineman. including 6-6 Zach Quinney at tackle and both Kenny Cooper and Conner Hansen, both over 300 pounds. Plus Mikey Minihan. Running backs Dontae Smith and Jordan Mason, oh, and Nathan Cottrell. Receivers Jalen Camp (NFL), Malachi Carter and Adonicas Sanders. Two four star kids at QB - James Graham and Jordan Yates. Another QB, Lucas Johnson, who wound up being a bowl game MVP at his next stop. 4 star DE/LB Justice Dingle. 4 star LB Bruce Jordan Swilling. 4 star DB Kaleb Oliver, 4 star DB Gentry Bonds, 4 star DB Jaylon King, Charlie Thomas, Jordan Domineck, Wesley Walker (who started at Tennessee), David Curry, Juanyeh Thomas, Tariq Carpenter (both in the NFL), 4 star CB Tre Swilling, Zamari Walton and let's not forget Tobias Oliver. The biggest deficiency was DT. And if Brandon Adams had lived, it would not have been. But Collins also inherited D'Quan Douse from the 2019 PJ commitments, too. PJ inherited 8 4 stars. He left his successor with 8 4 stars and some other players who wound up in the NFL. Enough with the cupboard was bare crap. I'd take that roster.

I will say that this video reinforced my disdain for Geoff Collins. It was also a revelation to learn how the Tech administration treated Coach Johnson. He certainly deserved better. However, I think your impression that CPJ took a "shot" at Brent Key was a bit of an overreaction. Perhaps CPJ could have made a statement about how Coach Key has turned the program around. While I do agree that Key couldn't realistically criticize Collins during his tenure as Head Coach, have you ever heard him criticize Collins since he became Head Coach? Thanks for sharing this.

I did not think I could like the Clown any less, but when I heard that they locked CPJ out of the build...that ticked me off. I don't know if that was the Clown's direct doing or who, but you don't treat a man who did what he did for us the way he was treated. As for the transfers, while I don't disagree that we need to reasonable, I have never had a problem with us maintaining our academic rigor and integrity. I am fine with some exceptions like we appeartly had under O'Leary, but I would want to know more about the transfer rules. As you point out, transferring into Tech is not easy - nor should it be. (And you are right...Patrick Skov and he was the B-back that replaced the guys who were on the 2014 Orange Bowl team...and no, he never really did that much). Yes, Stanford is a fantastic school, but what did he major in there? Was his major such that he had the necessary courses that he would need to jump into Tech coursework. I completely get Paul's frustrations, but at the same time, we would need to know more than just his GPA.
I do agree that he is discounting the change out of the Triple Option. You could walk into UGAg and score 75-80 points every game with their talent, but it takes time to rebuild the roster to run a more common contemporary offense.

Remember, the main difference is under center versus shotgun, which ties into his frustration in trying to explain what it is. I remember listening to Roddy Jones correcting commentators and it was gold! That being said, if CPJ doesn't get those players to stay... what happens? He has a right to side-eye Brent Key... I'm not going to fault him for that.

The triple option is absolutely Small Ball when it comes to offensive line play and I’m glad you addressed it. 250 is an exaggeration but 270-285 about the standard and that’s 20 to 30lbs less than the average P5 OL. It was that way by by design. They ran the OL so much that keeping weight on was nearly impossible and they went on to recruit guys who were specifically on the smaller side especially for tackle.

I’ve been a Georgia tech fan since I was 7.
When we hired Chan Gailey I thought it would be a disaster but up until 2019 Chan Gailey had more active players from his tenure at Georgia Tech (from 2002-2008) than Paul Johnson did. Think about that for a minute.
The best year CPJ had the year he has a cupboard full of talent left behind by Gailey. There’s a reason why no power 5 school even runs this offense.
CPJ ran Tech into the ground. Collins was a strange dude but he inherited a mess.
I always say this but had Gailey played ANYBODY at QB instead of Reggie Ball (who’s best season was his freshman year beating auburn) including jusr running Calvin Johnson out of the wildcat then Gailey would’ve been the head coach at Tech for as long as he wanted. He had figured out a way to crack the code and recruit at Tech much like Paul Hewitt.
A lot of the incoming recruits are from Georgia and I like that. Even the good class or two collins had it was all over the lower 48

Possibly your best show Wreck Talk. Excellent work. Good to see you not portraying CPJ as a deity. CPJ was as smooth as sandpaper and a bitter dude WHILE he was coaching at GT. This is not revisionist history, CPJ had worn out his welcome at Tech, and the very few thousands in the stands every Saturday were just as tired of CPJ as CPJ was of Tech. Definitely a mutual parting of the ways. CPJ offered his resignation and Stansbury accepted it immediately. That said, CPJ is one of the top 5 coaches ever at GT. CPJ left to program destitute for the clown that followed him. The program athletes could not transition successfully to CGC's offense, especially on the OL and QB. CGC proved that he could not develop players, teach techniques or plan a game. It was a disastrous 3 years and how he treated CPJ makes CGC look even worse (if possible). It was good to see CPJ back in the building last season and name put up on the ring for the CFBHOF.

I would push back on his offense being some kind of glaring issue against Clemson after 2014. Those last 4 years Paul was there, Clemson went 55-4 with 2 of those 4 losses to Alabama teams who won the national championship (they also beat Alabama twice and dog-walked them by 28 points) and 1 to Syracuse on a sleepy Friday night in Syracuse with the starting QB out injured. Had Paul decided to come back in 2019, it’s a team that likely competes for the Coastal and would have rolled easily over the Citadel and Geoff Collins-led Temple. Would get blown out by Clemson and UGA, sure, but certainly would not have lost 45-0 to Virginia Tech and Justin Fuente, who was the coach referenced as calling it a total circus after having lost 3 straight to Paul 2016-2018.

First let me say that Collins was one of the biggest coaching debacles we’d ever seen. Todd Stansbury should never be hired for another professional job for how long he let that clown show go on. CPJ was a fine coach. The TO was a cool and fascinating offense to watch…. But when it was bad, it was REAL bad. I get he was a good coach. But I don’t understand the praise he gets sometimes. The way people talk about him makes it sound like he brought Tech multiple National championships. If we aren’t winning Nattys, then our next goal should be beating UGA right?? The guy only beat UGA 3 times. And those UGA teams in the past were nowhere near what they are today. Those teams were beatable, and Mark Richt OWNED CPJ. We might’ve beaten Kirby once, but that was year 1 and we barely scraped by. I hate celebrating being mediocre. I will never understand the praise he got. All I can say, “yeah CPJ was a fine coach. Can’t recruit, but he makes it work” that’s about all there is to say. It was way past due to move on from the TO. And now it seems like tech is still recovering. I love Tech, and I hate UGA. I want Tech to beat UgA so bad. I believe Key has us moving in the right direction

But some of the run oriented shot gun formations - like Army or Coastal Carolina or (dare I say it) Tech in the late season - would probably be Paul's choice, just like Monken. Oh, and about recruiting. True, Tech probably wouldn't have got King to transfer. But I bet Paul would have sold the farm to get Castlleanos and I bet he would have succeeded. It isn't that we didn't get good players; check the record. it's that the recruiting rankings are gaged to a different style of football.

Four things that limited Ga Tech success with the triple option over time.
    1. Other teams and coaches figured it out. The players and coaches had seen it. And often the other teams would take a bi-week or schedule a weaker team who also ran the triple option. .
    2. Our offensive line was too small compared to elite teams. Over time, it got to a point that the better football teams like Clemson and UGA didn't even need to take a bi-week for us because their lines just began to plough us over. The mis-directions didn't work when defensive linemen drawfed our offensive line.
    3. Our quarterbacks seemed to regress with time. Typically, QBs would get better year after year as they got older and had more experience. Unfortunately, ours got worse. I suspect this was due to the number of hits they would take.
    4. Recruiting.
Ultimately, we were seeing less and less success with Paul Johnson and it was time to move on.

Also regarding "small ball", CPJ probably took it as something akin to Key referring to CPJ's football as little league football, not that his guys were physically smaller, so if that was the inference, then it's a bit offensive to CPJ.

The criticism of CPJ boils down like this me. He’s an old school coach. You’ll be hard pressed to find a coach/person/CEO who won’t defend their way of doing things and see almost no negatives about it. Much less a coach who had success at every place where he was the head honcho. Coaches are like politicians, they are always right to a fault and egotistical to the point of insanity. This only gets pointed out if they don’t win. Winning is a cure for every disease and winning is the ointment that covers up every rash. Look at the GSW. No one challenged the Draymond/KD thing because they were winning. Plus CPJ has earned the right to be what is now considered delusional about his way of coaching. Because it worked

Actually, the triple option is great and the reason everyone doesn’t run it is it’s not exciting, from most fans perspectives. You take advantage of your personnel on the field. For example, you may run a full back dive for one or 2 yards on first and second down and then do a half back sweep to a speedy Roddy Jones on the outside for 15 yards, or he may go paydirt! From a football purist standpoint, like myself, I find it ultra exciting!
