- World-renowned wildlife photographer Tom Mangelsen spends his life documenting elusive and endangered animals -- at times waiting 42 days to get the shot. He's most famous for "Catch of the Day," often called "the most famous wildlife photograph in the world." He spoke with 60 Minutes' Anderson Cooper in 2018.

the shot with him, Jane, and the doggy was equally amazingly beautiful
Such a likable guy, what a special person that photographer is.
Brought me to years... Jane is a saint. Tom records what is more fragile than ever, poetically.
Only true nature lovers would do this!!! Let the work shine! I’d love to photograph with these photographers
I was lucky to be there the day 60 Minutes filmed Tom in the snowy field in Grand Teton. I've also stood next to him in Yellowstone filming a mother Grizzly with her new cubs near Old Faithful. He does have remarkable patience, something I've tried to learn from him.
Wow…amazing photos! Tom is a wonderful person! Sitting with Jane and the dog warmed my heart! Please keep 399 safe ❤
This is amazing and one of the best "jobs," as in this case, a career, to have. The amount of Earth he has seen must be insurmountable and beautiful.
Dude, I’m going tk be like him one day I’ve been homeless and I’d take photos of situations and nature and I want to share my stories one day too.
Continue with your passion … no matter ❤️🙏🏻
I'm trying to do the same thing with the desert.
Follow your dreams………
god is good
I went to Teton & Yellowstone NP for the first time in 2019 and I've never been the same! My sister and I visited his gallery in Jackson, WY and we are huge fans of Tom's work and have purchased many of his portraits, even 399. His photographs are stunningly beautiful. He has given me a whole new perspective on wildlife and the preservation of these magnificent species that are endangered. You will only advocate and protect what you learn and love. Thank you, Anderson, for this great story.
Brilliant work simply beautiful photography..You deserve Champions of the Earth award! Thank you Tom
I live in Wyoming and have loved his work for a very long time.
Outsstanding photography! Also, what an experience to see the animals in the wild.
Many years ago I spent a week I’m Mountain View Wyomong with a good friend,I wax able to dip my toe in the Snake River that trickeked in his back yard.
One if the most unforgettable experiences was visiting the home of one of his good friends, she had dozens of arrwowheads she had collected on her hikes and two whole petrified turtles,it was an experience I will never forget .
Thank you so much 🥰
Philadelphia USA 🇺🇲❤️
To live longer and find purpose in life it is advisable to reconnect with nature
If anyone is reading this, Grizzlies were put back on the endangered species list and therefore are currently protected under law.
That's a good news!
Glad to know that
Thank You! I guess you can disregard my comment in the beginning. We can thank the Sierra Club and other wildlife advocates for saving them!
omg what a relief to hear this !
I’ve been in awe of Tom’s work and Jane as well. Two of the most amazing people. I saw a documentary some years ago. It is called ‘winged migration’ - I highly recommend it; stunning. The discussion on the migration of the cranes made me think of it.

Thank you for highlighting Tom Mangelsen's work. I didnt even know him, but now, I am in awe. His portfolio is probably one of the most important (and stunningly beautiful) sets of photographs humanity will ever have.
One of the great photographers of our time…of any time! Those today who rely on over processing fake images would do well to see what his far more honest approach has revealed.

@11:13 "there are people here who have said that they can't wait for a season to open so they can shoot 399 because that would be the biggest prize, the biggest trophy"
At times mankind's arrogance is appalling and is a type of ignorance on a whole different level.
So upsetting absolutely horrible, just beyond . Made me so upset to hear this how could these precious animals carelessly be taken off protection list just who is making these decisions and how can it be stopped !?
There are more psychopaths among us than we realise.
I loved this episode of a show I rarely even watch.
Loved this 60 min..so interesting and beautiful . I love how he loves what he does and it shows. Thanks for the show.
I honestly didnt know this guy before, but these pictures are amazing!
Anderson Cooper: thank you so much for this outstanding segment of a superb photographer capturing the beauty of our wilderness and wild life. It is through such magnificent legacy that such places and wildlife will survive and future generations will recognize how narrow our present vision has been - in not protecting the gems of our planet. Thank goodness for wonderful human beings like Mangelsen and Woodall.
Time for a Z9 Tom!!! Great video. Fellow Nebraska photographer here out of the SE corner. I wish I could take some of those amazing trips someday with my cameras. Just recently got into wildlife shooting and I find it to be so much fun!!
Patience is definitely “key” - such awesome images.
I am just a hack nature photographer, as I refer to myself. This story & pictures just resounded on so many different levels for me
He is amazing.
Anderson Cooper, well done. Tell me this wasn't a dream assignment!
This is legendary.
I have some black bears visited my garden often from spring to fall, some really huge in size, some young adults, and sometimes momma bear with her cubs… I see nothing but their beauties and gentle soul, so please be kind and nice to them🙏 thank you from my heart❤️
Absolute respect
The process makes this work special
🇮🇪 wow amazing images beautiful nature lovely animals
Beautiful story.
Thank you
There is absolutely nothing like seeing animals in the wild. I too have spent many hundreds of hours waiting and watching after paddling, backpacking or mtn biking far and wide to get to the right vantage point for just a glimpse of a wild animal.
Fantastic!
WOW! She's beautiful! This photographer is incredible 1:52
Beautiful a tru angel working thank you ❤blessings and peace
Thank you for all this beauty!

2 Amazing people !!
Beautiful!
You are Awesome Tom!
Your photography is amazing Tom thank you. Your photographs will be all that's left of the wildlife that use to be by the time man gets done destroying it (killing ).
Amazing!!
Incredible…
I THINK I SHALL NAME 399 ( BIG MOMMA ) LONG MAY SHE LIVE !
Goosebumps this is exactly what I want to do.
I admit 100% I will always Love animals more than humans. Especially big Cats and Eagles.
amazingly pic.
Beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time....
Butterfly and alligator is perfect
Brilliant animal lover and photographer. Mengelson changed from hunter to animal lover. All of us, we can change too.
Brilliant reporting about him too!
Thank you for your incredible work that speaks volumes - I have been sharing your work with everyone I can think of - hoping they too will want to preserve what we have left. Thank you so much!
Just beautiful!!!!

Thank you it's fascinating photography , it takes a special person to be so patient to share his experiences with nature
The way it should be done...
Reality is incredibly special and unique in the wild...
An amazing photographer...
I prefer animals to people too...
My patience with adults is nil...
🇿🇦
Stunning 🥸
I only capture wildlife in the wild because that's what a wildlife photographer does.
A magnificent human being
ᴡʀɪᴛᴇ ᴛʜᴇ' ᴜsᴇʀɴᴀᴍᴇ ᴀʙᴏᴠᴇ ᴏɴ ᴛᴇʟᴇɢʀᴀᴍ.
Very awesome!!!!!!!!
So so beautiful.
42 days for 12 to 14hrs a day. Now that's persistent!!!
He spent 23 days to capture 399 come out of the den with her Cubs last spring.
We have not enough people of this kind.
Absolutely gorgeous

Love this srory- & it makes me sick that not only do they want to open " Grizzly Bear Hunts -- they are also targeting the Wolves -- It's dispicable, because both species are so very few left in the U.S. when you think of the areas they are actually still habitating very sad☹
Let's let a few grizz in your backyard and see how you like them then👍
Please protect Mother Earth, and all her crèches , ❤ 😊 !
Love you TOM :)
3:02 "this little tiny space" goes blank
Super, i love your filosofie or leif! And your great pictures. Thanks
Brilliant, all.
Fabulous
I wish I had a camera like him.❤
His images have very little to do with his gear. It’s knowing how to use it
Big game hunting for rare and exotic animals has to be lowest bar for man kind. Beer hunting season?! Good grief.
Sad that there's few ppl like this man than there are men who just want to take life.
Impressive
Agree with him. Yes, on their natural territory
totally, whoever lives or works with animals understands why we loves them more than humans....
Hunters, please leave 399 alone and let her good genes pass on
❤❤❤
Thank you I love your programs. Greetings from Switzerland
My gratitude to this amazing photographer for bringing these scenes to all of us. Thank you Anderson for the great segment.
If I had the money I would travel the world doing the same as this photographer.
❤❤❤❤
Those hunters saying that stuff about 399 are just talking out their skulls because the truth is that 399 can never be killed and even if she is hunted her story lives on
Around Oxbow Bend in Grand Tetons NP. That where they were for the pic of the elk and 399.
I had seen Dr. Jane Goodall in our school during a visit she made.
Well done. Needra. !!
Be kind to animals
The planet is in peril
I agree. I have >4500 (shots on pinterest) of everything I saw in Europe...but I saw every thing I posted.
No people don’t think it’s photoshop you are not the only ones that travel. The dumb tactics added to a master piece photographer was not needed those awesome pictures are the best.
That is so sad that people want to hunt 399 for sporty because it’s the biggest trophy , this is why I don’t trust human either anymore. Come one now. This bear is a symbol of love and why nature is so beautiful timeline 11:10
Well, if we don't speak up like the previous generations did there will be nothing left.
Update - I just read the grizzlies were put back on the Endangered Species List thanks to wildlife conservation groups and court orders. But we still need to be proactive protecting the wildlife we have left -
Around*
😅 she want him to get a mirror less camera “wife gave permission to spend money” ❤❤
Oh I’m sure he was the first to get a pair of Nikon Z 9’s and he probably didn’t have to buy them. I bet Nikon sent him a couple and just asked to not cover up the Nikon logo, lol
🎥📸🌍🙌
Imagine being so 'sad' and "empty" as a person when you see a picture of the beautiful bear "399" at the end of this video with her adorable cubs, and that now they are no longer considered endangered species... you want to shoot them dead?
The rarest thing in this video is a Vanderbilt in a Carhartt
I can’t believe he’s friends with Jane !!! 😮
This guy reminds me of Sean Penn's character in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty"
