    As a German, I must admit that we in Germany neither understand Judaism nor, above all, do we consider anything but our own sensitivities on the subject. Essentially, we view Israel as Judaism and all Jews as Israelis or wanting to be Israelis (and do not even realize that in doing so, we are practically defining antisemitism).

    • @nilskp
      @nilskp 6 місяців тому +15

      Is this because the subject is generally avoided, out of fear of being even suspected of anti-semitism?

      Both. There is no natural, easy relationship, where people feel free to express themselves just so. There is only complete awkwardness around this subject. But what is happening over there is so f-ed up that more people can bring themselves to no longer care, because it's too much. From some of the people here you could get the idea that israel is superpopular in germany, but that is not really the case, current polls show that around 15-18% at best support what Israel does militarily.

      Yes, there is also complacency since even though life is getting worse, things are declining and less affordable every year, there is still bread and circus and fundamentally closer and more personal problems that one can worry about before this - even if they disagree with the policies regarding israel completely. A similar dynamic happened with the war in afghanistan, it was always insanely unpopular in Germany, everybody believed it was bullshit and yet it happened.

      There is a historical aspect to this, but people love to overpsychologise this, they get to make historic connections and feel totally smart and knowledgeable about it. In practical reality though, this happens in germany the same way it happens in UK, US or AUS - by a combined effort of the state and media apparatus. Part of the founding mythology of the republic is also that ensuring Israel's safety is a raison d'état and people get that drilled into their head by public media. It's not much different from american media and political class repeating the "greatest ally" mantra.

    I have been living in Germany for over 30 years. I have also lived in other countries. I totally agree with a lot that Iris Hefets says. I currently know NOONE who wants to talk about Israel and the genocide it is committing. I am quite devastated by this. Most people are too afraid to speak out, afraid of being identified in their community, afraid of being considered different, afraid of being ostracized, generally just afraid of having an opinion!!!!!!!!!!! It is truly shocking. I am losing interest in contacting any of my German friends, who prefer to talk about anything, literally anythng else other than the genocide of Palestinians. You could use all the expressions like....burying their heads in the sand, sweeping it all under the carpet, turning a blind eye...etc etc. They do NOT understand what it is to really discuss, to disagree, to endure a bit of disharmony in a friendship, to formulate a strong opinon let alone stand up for it!!! I have examined all these things for years and years but now I have no interest in any more 'reasons', 'causes', 'circumstances', or 'explanations' for their behaviour. I dislike it, I don't respect it, I find it pathetic, I find it deeply disturbing, I find it totally unattractive and massively concerning. I don't believe that Germany has processed very much at all since it committed genocide against the jews and others in WW2. I don't even think they really understand what 'processing' means, or accepting the responsibility to ensure it never happens again. There may be a small number of German people who are an exception to the rule, like Iris Hefets. She is isolated in her own circle of therapists as she said. I applaud her courage, applaud her stand, applaud her risk-taking and applaud her commitment to humanity. She sounds like a great and valuable person to me, I wonder if she wants to meet for coffee?????? STAY CONNECTED TO YOUR HEARTS PEOPLE!!!💞

      Same here! I live since 30 years in Germany. Most Germans are (regarding this item) weird and have no idea about judaism, they have a toxic link to Israel. They are not able to hear people like Iris. What a shame the path they took to work out their feeling of guilt. It doesn't help anybody, not even themselves.

  • @darkenemy42
    @darkenemy42 6 місяців тому +2

    She should have mentioned the so-called Staatsräson, that makes Germany support Israel unconditionally. It derives from the guilt, Germans have developed after WW2 and also kind of serves as an easy solution to make yourself believe, you are "the good one". As a therapist she describes that pretty accurate. The so-called Staatsräson is another step towards creating facts in this case. It's like a general rule for German policies.
    I don't know, if she's also an economist or historian (I'm not, to make that clear), but I'm confident that it's not (only) economical reasons that keep this going. She talks about Germany's unity with the United States in this case and I'd say that that's the actual reason. Germany was heavily influenced by US policies and political stands after WW2. I'd argue that this was primarily the case because of economical dependencies and that it later became a matter of security during the cold war, mixed with the (here comes the guilt again) certainty, that Germany would not be a military power again anytime soon, so of course they seek leadership in another superpower.
    I don't say, that all this is ok the way it is, but as a therapist she should know, that the development of values is quite complex and the cognitive dissonance that prevents us from making changes, is very strong. She also should have mentioned that there are many Germans, who are explicitly criticizing the Israeli government, are branded as antisemitic. That's also a reason, why many pedal back (there's the guilt again) in their opinion or silence themselves.
    The only way, I see substantial changes would be when more and more Jews would return to Germany and have a saying in politics and creating new values towards sensitive topics, which there unfortunately still are.
    I for myself am afraid, that this won't change anytime soon, but I'm confident, that it will change. But this will take generations. I've experienced the trauma in Jewish families, I've met in Israel, generations later, so I would bet the guilt won't just go away either.
    P.s.: the so-called "Juden in der AfD" are not taken serious by officials and not by the majority of citizens. Many of them are fraud, some in connection to waves of fake Russian jews, who came to Germany in the 90s by exploiting immigration policies that were meant to give Jews a home in Germany again.

    Quite noticable how some here don´t like their faces being mushed into their own mess while finding out that there´s a cap to be worn because it fits. They start whining right away trying to discredit the entire observation by picking out minor inaccuracies, smearing those and by that trying to shatter Hefets´ credibility. As long as you don´t have these whining "complainees" in an argumentative chokehold they´ll always try to weasel out the shame of blame.

    From my perspective as an german artist and pro palastine author. Much of Hefets criticism is correct, but some of it seems clearly exaggerated or even factually incorrect. All the harassment of artists (I am one myself), scientists or historians who clearly side with Palestine does indeed exist in one form or another. This is intolerable for me and I continuously oppose it. Examples include the banning and criminalisation of protests under hypocritical pretexts. The disinvitation and speaking bans for guests such as the former Greek economy minister Yanis Varoufakis (now politically active from the UK) are examples of dangerous nonsens. Nevertheless, Iris Hefets' portrayal is exaggerated. Just to give an example - the government (whose handling of the issue I reject as one-sided and overbearing) distinguishes even without exclamation marks between illegally occupied territories by Israel (East Jerusalem and settlements in the West Bank) and the territory of Israel and its sovereignty. (Find Below is a passage from the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as proof.)
    In the same way, the media (which tend to support the government's diction here in a one-sided manner) generally do not put the issue of israels illegal occupation in inverted commas in their reporting. The fact that they - also as a rule - do not condemn this just as strictly as a violation of peoples' and human rights, such as Russia's land grab in Ukraine, is intolerable and would be true.
    However, the lack of differentiation - despite all of Hefet's justified criticism - distorts reality. The problem in the inner-German discourse - led by the conflict of ‘historical guilt’ and the question of ‘what can still be said’ - is that there are two isolated camps and no dialogue between. One backs the interests of Israel and practices blind spots (led by the current government) and the other not only defends the interests und right of the Palestinians (as it should!), but also heroises this side and demonises the other. The lack of open dialogue across the gap seems to be a problem... not only in Germany.
    I miss in the dialogue sentences like: ‘Israel is controlled by a right-wing extremist government and justifies insane claims from a basic attitude of apartheid and superiority, while at the same time this does not represent all Israelis, nor their hope for coexistence.’ Or vice versa: ‘The terror on the other side is not just a legitimate response to oppression, but also an ideological weapon of forces that are determined to escalate, on the backs of the Palestinians, who are being victimised here.' Bo
    From the official website of the german Gov: Quote/Unquote: 'Die Palästinensischen Gebiete (Ost-Jerusalem, Westjordanland und Gaza) und der Golan sind seit 1967 von Israel besetzt. Die Bundesregierung unterscheidet strikt zwischen dem Gebiet des Staates Israel und den besetzten Gebieten. .../...'

    Her callling out the concept of "Gleichschaltung" was a minor epiphany for me. Here in Vienna I jokingly call myself a "Ketzer" -- a term applied to those who during the Protestant - Catholic religious conflicts kept speaking out about their "alternative" faith. That is a good question!
      The German capitalist class has tripled the “defence”budget since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine and is preparing to fight for its share of the world, especially as the U.S. undertakes the insane project of maintaining its dominance over the world economy.
      To revive militarism in Germany requires overcoming the history of Germany imperialism in both world wars. How better to do this than to claim you are now fighting “antisemitism”?
      In the 1990s the German Green Party leader and then German foreign minister Joschka Fischer said that Germany had a “special duty” to lead the intervention (and carve up!!) of Yugoslavia because of its history in WWII.
      There is also a shift to the left among the population in response to the wars and the genocide in Gaza. The ruling classes everywhere must find means to suppress this.

      I talked to numerous people about the genocide in gaza and for some genocide is something that only people we don't like can do.
      It's not that they don't accept any other genocide, other that the Shoa.
      They accept that there were genocides in yugoslavia and in Rwanda. They also accept both the genocide against the Armenians as well as that we committed against the Herero people.
      They will use the evidence we have for the shoa as a goalpost for the evidence needed to present concerning gaza (whilst not having looked at the evidence or the history themselves) but won't hesitate to accept genocides that were not as burocratic as the shoa was. Only people we think of as lesser than us can commit such horrid crimes (which inadvertently makes us the most cultured criminals in a perverse way). Racism and islamopobia feed into this way of thinking as well, as Palestinians are seen as lesser than Israelis, making some sympathise with Israel.
      For some others (like my parents) it is the gut feeling of the Israelis, seen as a stand in for all Jews, are and will be victims of us that could not commit such a horrid crime and that we have an obligation to support Israel due to our ultimate crime (I generally wouldn't call it guilt but rather a feeling of responsibility, although for some it's surely more akin to guilt).
      The idea that we expect Palestinians to pay for our crimes and to just make space and leave their homes as a consequence of a genocide we committed is rarely questioned.
      I dunno if this helps.
      Note: You can look into the "Anti Deutsch"e movement (Anti Germans) that split of from the left and heavily supports Israel no matter what. They grew less relevant over time but their way of thinking seems to creep up again and again and be deeply entrenched in some institutions and groups.

    Many people forget an important aspect of the zionist authoritarianism in Germany: we had it all before, during the covid hysteria. Civil rights were abandoned, certain demonstrations prohibited, certain information hidden by algorithms, a group of people vilivied by the mass media, politicians, VIPs, neighbors. People who got their voices heard were persecuted, they lost their job, their bussiness, their reputiation, their banking account and sometimes their freedom. And of course communities, friends, sometimes familiy members.
    Now I see it happening again, with another vilified group and other political claims. The disturbing thing to me is that many German peace or human rights activists, like this lady here, ignore the connections. During covid, they cheered the aggressive supression of resistance againg the authoritarian measures, now they act as if nothing had happened, German history had started seven month ago and they were the first victims ever.

      I dont know any. The known Jews in public in Germany are mostly born as Jew or kids of Jewish fathers (due to the low numbers of Jews in the country after 45 there were quite some interreligious marriages) and often Shoah descendents. The same is valid for some Jews who immigrated from former Soviet Union in the late 1990s eraly 2000s. There might be some German protestants converting to Judaism, but they are neither well known nor huge in numbers. It might be that Jewish life in Germany does not look Jewish enough for people from Israel or US, where the numbers were always higher and just more space for forming an identity existed which was neither the case in Germany nor in Eastern Europe after 45. And it is just not true that Germany splits Jews up into good (conformal) and bad (resisting). Almost all were sometimes praised and sometimes rejected or both at the same time by different people.

    First time I hear someone accurately describing Germany. This honesty is what they're afraid of!
    I don't wanna hear the guilt argument anymore, states don't feel guilt.

      You may not like to hear it, but collective Guilt is still a big factor among germans..and of course they, israel and germany, have huge trading agreements especially in the arms industry, so a lot of financial ties. These two countries deserve each other, ugly societies dressed up as tollerant and progressive.

      @@florafauna5883 Does the German state feel collective guilt for Namibia? Or even LGBTQIA, Gypsy people like the Roma & Sinti, and many more. I don't see the German state policy supporting the right of all these people to colo,nize and make new ethnocracies. There's no consistency in this guilt story. States don't "feel" anything. Some German people do feel this I'm not denying, but guilt has never been a real state policy.
      I believe it's all about mutual interests. There are still to this day American miltary bases and troops in Germamy, thousands of them. When Biden promised to stop Nordstream, the main artery to German industries, in front of chancellor Scholz. He didn't say one word. If the Germam state is willing to halt its industrial sector to conform to American policy, I'm afraid it also cannot have an independent opinion on isn'treal, zinoism or any of that. Gives a whole new meaning to Scholz's recent statement "Raison d'être", right? Germany might not continue to exist if it ever tries to take an oppositional stance against US policy.

    We don't have enough psychotherapists because health insurance limits the number of therapists that can bill public insurances (without a lot of bureaucracy) in each region. The number of these licenses have been calculated quite a while ago when there was much less demand. It's not that difficult to find somebody if you pay out of pocket, but since it should be covered by insurance people don't. Also, psychotherapists have high fees which is because it's so regulated that there is not that much supply (there is enough, but not to the point where they would be forced to decrease prices) and more importantly, many therapists start working with debts or having invested a lot of money. I have yet to hear of psychotherapy places being shut due to antisemitism accusations. Other places have been shutdown and it's a disgrace. But the connection she makes is off.
    Also, Berlin is different from other parts of Germany in many ways. Psychotherapy is one such way in which Berlin is different from the rest.

    Why are people calling people tzars now? I've seen it a few times and from context i think it means expert consultant but in a derogatory fashion to draw comparisons to russia & oligarchy. Is that correct or is this an actual title people are given and that's somehow missed me for 30 years?

    • @JP-fb8ni
      @JP-fb8ni 6 місяців тому +3

      "...but in a derogatory fashion to draw comparisons to russia & oligarchy"
      Close, but not necessarily in the derogatory sense. The word "tzar" is used to suggest that the person has broad authority and control over a specific area, reflecting a high level of responsibility and power. It's a nod to the historical Russian emperors who wielded extensive power, implying that the role involves significant influence and oversight.

    Netanyahu went to Germany with the message that the Mufti (read Palestinians, read Muslims) committed the holocaust, not Hitler, not the Germans.
    This is off course insulting nonsense. Millions of Muslims fought against the antisemitic Nazis during WW2.
    But many Germans were relieved that according to Netanyahyu Grandfather was not so bad after all. And they can bash the muslims, and meanwhile think they are doing OK because they are defending Israel, which means the Jews. It is disgusting. The founders of Israel Irgun, Haganah, Lechi fought the UK during WW2, which was the enemy of Nazi Germany. Some of the Zionists cooperated with Nazi Germany directly. Thanks to Arab Legion which supported the UK army in Palestine, UK troops could fight at another front (The Nazi front in Europe) and end the holocaust. Thus: The Founders of Israel lengthened the holocaust. Muslims stopped it.
