  • This is a video of how to get to your stator on a Mercury Black Max 150 outboard. At 8:04 I say rectifier but I meant Stator. I am NOT a mechanic so this video is ONLY to show how I got to my stator and what was required to do so. Do not take my information here as bible. I hope this helps someone who is searching for answers as I was. GOOD LUCK!

    Mine just did this. Found this video and we have pretty much the same engine. It would stall out at 2100 RPMs but would sometimes surge forward and jump to 4k-5k RPMs for a few seconds. It died right at the dock. Omg the cost of these parts! Thanks for putting the video up.

    Hey Sean. Thanks for sharing. I also have a 1981 Mercury 150 Black Max. I recently purchased the boat and motor and just as yours several of my wires were dry rotted.
    As I watched your video while you were removing your flywheel you indicated you couldn't remove the nut by hand even with considerable effort. An impact wrench certainly helped. Just FYI for others you can use a wide chisel or similar piece of metal and insert it between one of the top timimg cover mounting bolts/base to hold your flywheel while removing the nut. I personally used a 1.5" wide wood chisel turned horizontal between the left timing cover mounting bracket and the flywheel gear teeth to hold mine while removing the nut with a 1/2" long handled ratchet. It works pretty well if you dont have an impact wrench.
    Another note: If youre only removing the stator you can mark your flywheel tona reference point and remove the 8 smaller bolts around the flywheel nut and then remove your stator.
    Just thought I would share this information as to possibly help someone else attempting the job. Once again thanks for sharing your experience!

    FYI Only: The switch box:es had defective as well.
    Has been the key to all failure in the past - many service people forget to check them and when we change the 2 switch box :es - the engine start great now every time - this is also the cause to have STATOR failure - so my TIP is - if have START problem on the 150 HP Black Max - check the switch box:es both of them and this save you a lot of headick (replace them true long use) and less start problem for the future for sure... I also START my 150 Black Max every week to be sure is work and run true and water pump works OK as well... Good Luck out there guy's...

Watched your vid and found the fly wheel puller is treaded on outside and can be used along with the engine lift ring to lift engine to replace the steering cables. So, different project but your vid helped to see how to lift engine. Thanks.

    The flywheel doesn’t need to be pulled when only replacing the stator. If you take the bolts off that are around the fly wheel nut it will expose the bolts that hold the stator on. Just have to place the new stator in the same position that the old one come from and won’t have to retime it.

    • @joeblow3435

      Mercury says Never remove any of the bolts from the flywheel!! Danger of flywheel coming apart . It turns 5500 to 5800 rpms. Only remove the nut. And use a flywheel puller as seen. I also don't use impact it can harm the threads . Mercury service since 1983.

      @@troybriannatyler4962 I would juat check all the wires running from your triggers and switch boxes. Mice love to eat the coating but this wire coating also gets dry and brittle. You should and when you drop your lower end you should be able to see up your exhaust. I really doubt you have mice nests in there though. • @seanwilson3945
      @seanwilson3945  4 роки тому +1

      Uh....I don't really know about a jet unit. I bought a CDI unit and they all matched up BUT....take a picture of your wires BEFORE you disconnect them OR do what I did and just do 1 wire at a time to be sure. If they dont match up in color, you can easily determine which wire is for which position. Hopefully they gave you a schematic with a color code but if not, good old Google can answer your question.
      There is NO SHAME in taking it slow and taking pictures to look at so you get it right. Make sure when you put your flywheel back on, it goes on in the same position it came off, otherwise your timing will be off. Make marks, 1 on the flywheel and 1 on the engine to line it up after repair. This is really a easy job once you get through it one time. Good luck!

      I would NEVER try vice grips. I'd be too afraid of breaking my flywheel and then thats just another $300 bucks and a fee days wait to replace it. Maybe it's worked for you and I'm not gonna knock it, but it is something I'll never try lol. Especially now that I know my impact works so easy
