I guess the fact that l enjoyed season 2 of LOK the least is because I don't really like Unalaq as the villain. I'm kinda missing the depth in his character and his motivations
Honestly, he feels the most typical "evil for the sake of evil" villain of Avatar. Aside from Ozai, of course.

Whole plane attack scene was awesome! Asami with the flying skills along with Mako and Bolin just unleashing hell on earth was a sight to see lol.
After what Bumi pulled off with taking down the entire camp and rescuing everyone, I'm now wondering what other "crazy Bumi stories" were true.
Loved how dark and silent it went right before Vaatu was released. You get this sense of dread and everything.

You two obsessing over Asami's beautiful green eyes makes me want to recommend even more reading fanfictions after you're done watching the whole show, people are so obsessed w how beautiful she is fanfics really do her justice and not just in the beauty department!
Okay so the dark avatar isn't necessarily evil, Vatuu is the physical mnifestation of chaos which is not necessarily evil, it's mostly how we view it in the west but it's more complicated than that as we all know. So him being a dark avatar isn't evil in itself but it's the intentions of the one having vatuu inside which would greatly affect like 'the rate of evilness' hahaha. Ravaa is the spirit of order and they put her as the light spirit (as in both colour and symbol) bc in the west we view order as good and light/white as good, but the spirit in itself isn't 'goodness' incarnated, it simply is order. That's why not all avatars are as good, for example (if i'm not mistaken) the water tribe avatar before korra was extremely egotistical which we don't usually consider to be a good thing.
So Unalaq (and trust me I really don't like him either, he's infuriating!!) is much like Avatar Wan but in the opposite/chaotic way, which explains why he's very power hungry bc that's smt that always brings chaos to the world. By saying like Wan I mean that he's doing all of this for a specific reason which he deems fair or at least truer and better for the world - I just can't fully explain otherwise i'll spoil the reveal about Unalaq's reasons which won't be for a loooong time unfortunately.
Anyway, so yeah Unalaq sucks when you finish s2, but when you eventually learn the end of the explanation and you go back and put it all together he's really not shallow as a villain, he has a whole ideology that brought him to this decision but you only get crumbs for now and you get the binding agent (to put the crumbs together) later on in the show.
So don't worry you will eventually understand him :) I think he's way more complex as a character (so better as a villain) than Ozai who's just like 'mwhaha i will burn the world down i want power and destruction mwhaha' which is partly the reason why I don't like ATLA as much as an adult bc the 'utlimate' villain sucks tbh xD and we all know a good villain makes for a good plot! which is why during s2 we get less enthused by the plot bc we don't understand Unalaq, it's only w a rewatch that you can start appreciating s2 way more!

Unalaq's a very bland, generic, villain. He wants to release a dark spirit, fuse wait said spirit, & then use that power to reshape the world. Generic villain alert! Of all the TLoK villains, Unalaq's really does have the weakest motivations. One thing I noticed while watching, was that Unalaq admits he's the bad guy in this. Usually a good villain believes what they're doing is just, is righteous, is the best for everyone, but Unalaq just wants power to do bad things. Unalaq feels like edgy teen who wants to fight against the establishment because reasons.
Imagine if you would, instead of the motivations we got, what if Unalaq was abandoned as a kid, because of war between humans. Lost, hungry, barely clinging to life, he stumbles across a band of spirits. These spirits take him under their wing & raise him. Over several years of living among spirits, he develops a strong spiritual connection. Unalaq decides to travel the world, to broaden his spiritual views. But all he sees is oppression from humans. He speaks up about it, but is put down by the other humans. Years go by, & Unalaq returns home, but his family is no longer there. Signs of a fight plaster the walls. Unalaq knows what happened, he's witnessed what humans do to Spirits all over the world, but it ends now. He vows to put a stop to it. Unalaq could harbor a deep grudge against the Avatar because he hadn't heard of them trying to end this spiritual suffering & decides to forge a pact with Vaatu. He knows it's wrong, that Vaatu only cares about itself, but knows deep down there's no other way he can make a difference.
It's not perfect, I'm writing this with like 10% energy left, but it feels more impactful than: I want to be dark Avatar. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts. Thank you for reading if you got to this point. Ciao for now! =^._.^=
Honestly this sounds a lot better than the Unalaq we got lol. And after reading the Kyoshi and Yangchen novels as well, I feel like this idea of yours would align quite nicely with some of the conflicts seen/mentioned there between humans and spirits.
