  • @alasdair4161
    @alasdair4161 Рік тому +26

    Belt drive is a good idea as it works well to save prop damage if you strike a rock or similar.
    One immediate upgrade I'd recommend would be a couple of automatic bilge pumps in the hull, and a fire extinguisher or two.
    I have some similar sized boats with a myriad of electric drives and that motor size will be fairly efficient on a still lake with no wind, should make
    three to four knots depending on passenger count. The problem with electric is the power needs to go up almost exponentially to get to
    planing speeds. A thousand watts should hit 6-7 kts, and 2000 would probably hit 8-10, but then 10kw would be somewhere around 15kts again depending on load, but the v belt will need upgrading to tooth belt above a few kW, along with suitable prop sizing.
    Also, be careful adding weight to the canopy, it can have a serious effect on roll stability, especially with a crosswind. Cheers.

    • @briananthony4044
      @briananthony4044 Рік тому +3

      That's the problem with boats, each doubling of the horsepower only gets you a few extra knots.

    Very interesting Mica. I hired a small electric boat on the Norfolk Broads just before covid. It was fine at first, but as the wind strengthened the power grew weaker and it was a battle to get back to base. This suggests you need as much power as you can get to get you back to base on the lakes of Florida. Great video.

      @holmer9413 Рік тому +4

      You're right about that little motor and prop. A big enough wind will overcome the power that boat comes stock with. The belt on that motor looked kind of loose too. But there is nothing that can't be upgraded easily enough if the hull is sound. Might have to order more parts from China. lol

    • @Minacious_Shenanigans

    (11:20) I'd be cautious about adding too much weight in the form of solar panels to that canopy. If you make the boat too top heavy, it will really change the handling characteristics of the boat and make it more liable to tip over.

    Might be able to go 5 mph. And keep in mind doubling the power will not double the speed. For every doubling of speed you require 4 times the power based on wetted surface area friction, unless you can get it up on plane, which would take quite a bit of power for this boat. Just saying, don't expect a huge increase in speed by adding a little more power.

    Would also add in extra flotation using plastic bags and polyurethane or polystyrene foam, so that it has positive buoyancy, even when full of water. A bilge pump is also good, along with, seeing as you are putting solar on and running wire up, a nice low power LED panel under that roof for evening use. Probably will also need, if using on commercial waterways, to have it Coast Guard certified as well, and have both the emergency kit (standard plastic can that is attached to the side) and the alternate power method of a fold up oar in there.
    Trailer wise simple jetski trailer will work, just lower the rails and make them the width of those bottom pontoons, wider felt area and away you go.

    I've piloted one of those boats, there is a company not far from here i live that has like 10 of them in a lake and rents tem out by the hour, they have put 2 to 3 100w flexible solar panels on each vessel (some had bigger canopies), with that amout of solar is still not full of grid but helps a bit.
    Also, if you put in a more powerfull motor, more than likely will also have to change the motor controller.
    Not gonna lie, i considered buying one of those boats but for about double i could get a decent jet ski, so i gave up on that but i'm exited to see how yor purchase goes.

    its getting really cold here in Canada. I went out for a ride in -10C and the battery drained fast.
    Even though the battery was coming from my warm house it became cold and the battery drained fast.
    It only lasted about 30% of what it would normally perform in warm weather.
    I have seen others wrap their batteries with insulation so it would stay warmer for longer and thus get more range.
    I am probably going to put the bike away for the winter. Only on dry and sunny days bring it out for a brief ride during the winter. The battery will be staying indoors where it is warm.
    Going to keep battery at half charge or less in storage.
    Then charge it when a spot of good weather appears for a brief ride.

      They probably make these boats for pleasure use on lakes.. You'll find these boats a lot in public parks here. For that use they usually aren't superfast as they power them with lead acid batteries.

    seems like a fun little dinghy to hang out in still water. You should add an automatic bilge pump with a light and/or buzzer just in case the prop seal fails so you can bail out enough water to get to shore before the boat sinks to the botton of the lake.

      Agree with adding the bilge pump. I'm an oceanographer. Been on a ship sinking at sea hundreds of miles from land. Not fun !! Thankfully did not sink but engine room was taking on water. Definition of "that sinking feeling !!"

    Very cool. Looks like it will be a lot of fun :) BTW, a 500w motor is probably about 2/3 hp (google says it's about 0.670511 hp). So probably not very fast, but still , you on the lake or pond with friends and family, so still a good day :) Maybe keep a paddle or two around, just in case !

    From what you've said before you live in Florida, i.e. the sun is pretty much always shinning. Meaning with the solar panels this thing should pretty much just keep going, which is amazing and far beyond electric cars right now.
    In my opinion, unlike your boat electric road vehicles will not become a 100% convincing replacement for ICE powered vehicles until solar panels in the paint or bodywork type tech becomes available.
    Would you agree with this/what's your opinion? Can you see this in the future (chances of success) and are you aware of any such ongoing efforts to develop this? Thx

    Hey I just seen your video for the first time today! Was curious how much you paid for your electric truck? I also wanted to know if you have any leads on who can respoke my rear hub on my electric Schwinn??? A bike shop has said that they don't touch them because they don't make them. I live in Detroit Michigan. Thank you for your time!

    I have a question from the USA. Is this craft US COAST GUARD approved? With a placard stating so? If it is, definitely interesting and affordable to an entry boater. I'd even be interested in having one to supplement the fun on the river.

    Interesting boat, the bottom looks like almost the exact same design as my parents electric boat, which has a flat bottom. The boat they have is called an Eldebo (literally stands for Electric Deck Boat).

    better looking than the donut boat, that is a catamaran hull but a flat version catamaran hull improves speed, if you upgrade look into more efficient props perhaps before even thinking about the motor and such.

    I like it but the electric control system is way to low in the boat I would raise up like the top of the battery box, nice touch on adding solar panel to it

    3/4hp motor. I would think you need at least 10hp 7500w to maybe get it plane on the water. Maybe some of those golf cart motors can be retrofitted. And 48v lithium battery
