    I had end rot problems a few years ago. I read up epsom salt helps get rid of that problem. So I started using it the same way you mention in this video, once when I first plant them and again sometime in the middle of the season. And for the past few years now, no more end rot.

      I buy seeds from your site every year. I like your Cukes and Zukes package and every year I try a different variety of tomatoes. They grow great no complaints over here. I live in a 6a zone

    Gary I love your channel. This year I planted 12 tomato plants, two of which were big beef. I live in zone nine which is very sunny and hot. My yard gets about 10 hours of direct sunlight. I usually get early,middle and late blight. I decided to put a black cloth on my surface before planting and I built a pre-fab shade canopy with 40-50% shade cloth. The results were unbelievable. Best season of yield I have ever had. Biggest difference? No blight.

    Your tomatoes really look great, Gary. Nice and green and healthy. Mine are starting to get tired here on the southeast coast of North Carolina. Most of the fruit has been harvested and I'm beginning the leaf spot battle. This weather pattern we're going to be stuck in for the next week or two won't help things. Keep up the good work! Can't wait to see how your beefsteak contest ends.

      I lived in eastern North Carolina for about 20 years. I suspect you're getting a lot of rain which might be purging nutrients out of your topsoil? My neighbor was successful using the furrow method. He would plant on top of the Hills of soil or furrows. That's a common practice out here in the arid Southwest also. It forces the roots to go deeper as they are in slightly drier soil.

    Okay, this has been my theory since I have been gardening for over 38 years, instead of intense work like u r teaching, just plant a few more and do ur best and u will have more than enough tomatoes and relax!

      Yes, I see ur point. I am trying some of the ideas to avoid blight, but mostly I do not have the time to do all the things u do with ur plants. All good to know if one has the time to do them, but overall, it is easier for me since I have the room to plant more and to some degree let nature take it's course. Thanks for all ur helpful information!

      Vivian I plant in raw compost with wood shavings with bunny manure, Leaves, twigs, weeds and veggie scraps. my tomatoes love it and they wont stop growing and all i been doing is adding more leaves sticks and food scraps and some wood shavings from my bunnies... they do not need as much water and haven't been wilting in the heat or have their leaves curling. set it and for get it and pick as the tomatoes get ripe. lol Yes I'm a lazy gardener to some but i want happy plants and plants been surviving longer then man. In the woods of Tennessee the places i noticed plants growing like crazy was where leaves pilled up the fall before. so up here in southeastern Washington State dry semi arid dessert it works just the same way. when i had volunteer potatoes from my peelings tossed in a compost pile grow up an give us a free unattended crop of potatoes i was sold on being a copy cat to mother nature. I do add little surfer and Diatomaceous Earth to keep fleas out of my yard I'm sure the tomatoes and other veggies benefit from it as well. i do find my tomatoes last year and this year love eggshell puree lol best part is they are bug free and have no diseases

    One of the basic rules for growing Giant tomatoes is to never let a cluster of tomatoes develop . I always pinch off all but the largest blossom do the plant puts all its energy into that. My personal best is a tomato that at was about 4 pounds. That was a Big Zac hybrid.

    Coffee grounds are acidic but when spread over the soil has a minimal effect on the soil pH. They do, however, contain allelopathic chemicals that can inhibit growth in certain susceptible plants. Once the coffee grounds fully decompose this is not a concern.

    I have a reply to the question what would I do to increase the size of that bottom tomato.. I would remove all folliage underneath that tomato. Its a good practice for vine tomato's, all leaves and dead flower clusters, etc. are removed from beneath the lowest developing tomato cluster.

    People say not to use organic matter in containers that your asking for disease but i have been doing it for 3 years now with good results i even have worms living in my soil from time to time i bury banana peels for them worms lived there through my cold winter in kentucky zone 6b i even use worm castings in my seed mix Another question i have is If Vermastrea is pure worm casting why is nt it black in color i use wiggle worm which is way cheaper with great results would you consider doing a comparison between wiggle worm and vermastrea

    • @luanahiebert1916
      @luanahiebert1916 6 років тому +2

      Worm castings are black, but when you make a tea with it the tea is a nice brown. For best results when brewing the tea add a few tablespoons of molasses and aerate w an aquarium pump. The beneficial bacteria will multiply rapidly and provide your plants assistance in up taking nutrients from the soil. I use worm castings in my soil when planting and then use the tea daily to water the baby plants when they are getting started. Later I switch to using the tea once a week or so.

    • @wednesdaynotifications1460
      @wednesdaynotifications1460 6 років тому

      Bonnie Burdine the vermisterra worm castings are dried I believe. While the wiggle worms are just packaged.
      The verimisterra might be expensive due to brand name. Which is why I don’t use it. Too expensive considering I can get a 30lb bag for 30 bucks.
      The tea is way to expensive for me as well.

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 років тому +2

      I don't know why they would say that. It is needed and works. Compost is pure black. More casting you have it is a little lighter but when you see me using it often drys out a bit from the sun. Vermisterra is more expensive but you get more castings by weight. And less water weight. I did a quick comparison video on it for seed starting.Other products are cheaper and good but you get compost and castings. Both work. Just find a product you trust and stick with it.

    Gary, what are your thoughts on using a bonemeal amendment at the start of the season before planting? My understanding is this gives you some magnesium as well, would an epsom salt application be more likely to overdose the plant in that case?

    • @THERUSTEDGARDEN
      @THERUSTEDGARDEN  6 років тому

      Bone meal is great. And ES, I use far less than I ounce did. I only recommend it 1 or 2x's and very little quick poor on the roots. This way you don't over do it and as a micronutrient. The plant has extra but not enough to mess it up. Containers need it more as I described than earth beds.Please check out my seed and garden shop at www.therustedgarden.com

      I wouldnt. Let them grow. More poundage that way and no guarantee that removing would make them bigger since they have been growing.

    . Question, can I use baking soda spray instead of the sulphur for pests? And I today found these itsy bitsy copper brown bead eggs on the top of my squash plants ,I cut those leaves off, but curious as to what kind of eggs this may be, plz tell me what you think.

      Baking soda is just for disease. Sulfur is for disease and does kill some insects. You are seeing squash bug eggs. ive heard that baking soda spay can help stop cracking on tomatoes. I only have a small garden with only1 large tomato producer ( a rutgers) every tomato cracked there still good but looks bad its in a 5gl container. I have several cherry tomatoes there in the ground and havent cracked. We've had some heavy rains so im blaming that for the cracks (not me LOL). I know they need regular schedule water or consistent amount of watering but i cant explain that to mother nature. Next time i plan on trying the baking soda spayed on the fruit itself.

    Hi Gary, thanks for the video.
    I have had issues in the past using elemental sulfur, as once absorbed into the soil overtime from watering the plants/rain etc it increased the acidity in the soil as it naturally turns into sulfuric acid. I lost a number of plants due to nutrient deficiencies and I was using less than your recommendation. Cheers.

      I get decent shade around 3 PM from trees in the yard and Im zone 6a/6b right on the cusp of both. When i mention I see wilt it is around 10 am in the morning if i skip a day watering. WE get a lot of humidity and wind here so it just sucks it right out. I think shade cloth might take too much sun from the rest of the garden, maybe? Maybe like a 40% shade cloth or one that blocks 40% of the shade? Will it still allow enough sun for tomatoes and peppers?

    Hi Gary, I've tried a tumbling composter for last 2 years with no success. Mine is a lot larger than yours. I must not be getting the ingredients right as it never gets hot and it's black too and in direct sun. I add both green grass, dry leaves and fresh kitchen refuse along with dry newspaper, brown grocery bags to increase the dry ingredients and also keep it damp enough to equal a damp sponge. And I turn it every 3-4 days once it is loaded. I can pile my regular compost pile up higher (close to 3 feet) and it gets hot within a few days but the tumbler never gets hot. Do you have any advice on how to get the proper % of each type of ingredient

    Do you make your own wormcast tea, and if so .... how would you compare it to compost tea? Your garden is looking great .... I've only just started getting any tomatoes on my plants (peppers are doing better). I have not seen one bumblebee this year yet ..... that is my number one pollinator ..... not good! I'm having to tap on the plants, which is nuts. I have some marigolds growing in small buckets here and there to try and attract more pollinators, but I'm not seeing any results. I think most of my pollination is caused by wind action. This is one weird growing season for me so far. Take care & happy growing to you and all your followers out there in the ethernet ~8^)

    • @wednesdaynotifications1460
      @wednesdaynotifications1460 6 років тому +1

      David Straub worm tea, increases a lot of the microbial activity. If you use worm tea, make sure you get some of the good worm tea onto the leaves. Plants will absorb the worm tea from their leaves. Pretty much a foliar spray.
      Compost tea, would work as well, but I usually use it in the soil. So I use kelp and fish as my liquid fertilizers. Whole garden tone and compost are my longterm fertilizers.

    • @wednesdaynotifications1460
      @wednesdaynotifications1460 6 років тому +1

      David Straub as for the pollinators, tomatoes and peppers don’t need bee pollination. Their flowers have both male and female parts. So bees aren’t necessary for them.
      Bees have a schedule, so they might show up much earlier in the morning to much later in the day.

    • @straubdavid9
      @straubdavid9 6 років тому

      Thanks for your reply .... this is the first time I've not seen bumblebees working my garden, and it is my understanding that they are THE pollinators for tomatoes and peppers, along with sweat bees. I'm in my garden several times a day and even in the dark with a headlamp to avoid the heat of day ...... nothing! Why do I see so many people using electric toothbrushes to simulate the bee's vibrations, or even a Q-tip to transfer pollen? Is that just not necessary?

    • @straubdavid9
      @straubdavid9 6 років тому

      I use fish emulsion and garden tome as well ...... I'm new to wormcastings and have added them to my container mix this year. I will sure try it as a foliar ....... thanks for the tip. Best of luck in your garden.

    • @wednesdaynotifications1460
      @wednesdaynotifications1460 6 років тому +1

      David Straub the bees help the pollination occur faster. I should have mentioned that before, my mistake. The electric toothbrushes are to help pollinate faster as well, therefore to emulate a bee.
      Again, the stipulation of a tomato and a pepper, is more to get both pollinated quicker. An easier way to do it, is just shake the plant every day, or twice a dAy. Shaking the plant helps strengthen the plant root system, so it’s a plus. But most of all, shaking the plant, helps get the pollination done quicker.
      We might have a bee shortage this year. I haven’t seen to many of them in my garden. I personally wonder if Zika got to a lot of our bees.

    Bruh I got one tomato plant you inspired me to grow it. It’s called big boy tomatoes and yes I bought it for the name. Now It’s like 6 feet tall and I’m like GODDAMN cuz I don’t have no money for no stakes and it’s hanging over. I tried using sticks out the yard but they break wen it rains hard. I’m from Louisiana. Horribly fucked up weather. Excuse my profanity. so I’m wondering can I just like.... cut it down maybe? And also what’s bugging me is it’s so hot my tomatoes won’t ripen on the vine. So I left some on there and they got BRUISED. And I’ve been having this plant for 5 months and still haven’t eaten it’s tomatoes (it barely produces any it’s all foliage TOO MUCH FOLIAGE) because they always come off green or bruised or with holes or something. And I’m trying Gary I’m really trying. It’s ONE PLANT Gary....

Depending on who you listen to you can hear both. I have more faith in your knowledge than i do any other youtube channel. Also if removing some of the tomatoes and flowers make the remaining ones get bigger than i dont understand why you wouldn't do that with the one you have the challenge with.
