Great video. How is this affected by the retrofit wiring kit for the instrument cluster? I have a Subaru motor in my '87 Weekender and a couple wires on the blue foil sheet shorted out and melted. My mechanic tells me that he can't figure out a way to get the check engine light to work with the retrofit wire kit. Any ideas?
Not a lot of demand for someone to invest in making these harnesses from scratch. A friend of mine put a 2.5 in a Baja Bug. He bought the adapter hardware from a company in California. They didn't offer a mod dedicated harness but gave him contact info for a guy that did them one at a time. I love how it drove when he was done. I wasn't to do the same thing but always had some other projects or lack of time.
I don't know he built his in about 95. I believe the adapter came from Kennedy. I had a dozen or so friends in a club of Baja owners. Several of them had swapped to other motors including Subaru, Toyota and Ford 2.2 I was one of a few still using a VW motor. We even had a guy with a 1.6 diesel in his.
+abe frohman Ha! A 200mm clutch became a routine maintenance item with a high horsepower engine. I haven't seen that in normal driving but I bet in Baja style driving it would wear it out pretty quick.
Hi ,fantastic vidoes,I was just wondering what you do with the sensor grounds, are they left alone. Im trying to get a 2000 Impreza 2,5 harness to work on my 2000 2.2 Impreza and for some reason the fuel pump wont cycle and the obd2 wont connect, your input would be greatly appreciated.
Some questions trying to get everything finished up for a test fire. I can start on ether only right now. fuel pump isn't getting power from the relay and even if I hotwire the pump it seems the injectors are not firing. any tips? also around 10:10 you mention 3 splices for the busaru speed sensor. ignition on, ground, and the VSS connection to the ECU I'm guessing?
I kept messing around and found an ignition wire that needed signal to make the fuel pump cycle but it still wouldn't start. after de-cluttering the excess wires from the ecu connections I got it to fire. I'm not sure what changed between cleaning up the harness and earlier, but it starts every turn of the key. So, back to the VSS, cooling, soldering the connections and cleaning up the harness.
I'd love to see an air-cooled vanagon done just to show the subtle differences from start to finish between water and air cooled models of vanagon in general.
Took me two weeks. An hour here, a half hour there. Because I didn't want to cut any wires I wasn't supposed to (did anyway). I had to (wanted to) lengthen some wires and shorten others to make them work better in the harness. Also, I didn't run a transmitter for the OBDII, and actually ran wires to the front for a ScanGaugeII. Reason: As the years roll by, the support for some sort of Apple product may disappear. If I did it again, it would probably only take me a day or two. A guide to the years/models with differences in sensors (MAS vs. MAP) or the newer atmospheric pressure sensors, would help a bit. Thankfully, I haven't had to deal with TBW issues in my application, but some will. The "spoofing module" that SmallCar sells has saved me some issues with codes. Perhaps there is a better way for the DIY'er. Thanks for doing this. Although I may be done with it, myself, many will appreciate it!
Do you have any stock maps for the 2000 EJ251 A11001A 0D42100605 - been looking for a while and unable to locate a base map and def for this ECU.Thanks Brad Legacy 2000 GX
I have a harness that I did up for a swap and I am wanting to get rid of the fuel level and pressure codes. You mention putting resistors in to get rid of them, can you go into that in more depth as to what wire needs what resistance please. I am also having some other issues I believe might be related to the harness, would you be willing to help me try and figure them out?
Knowing that your experience with these harnesses is an advantage, how low does it take you to go through a harness such as this one from start to finish?
less stress on the person doing the swap and less stress for someone like who who has to do it by hand where it could be done by machine instead and be mass produced
+luke9511 It's no stress for me to do it and it's only $450. Due to connectors not available for purchase, the robotics necessary to build a custom wiring harness, as well as the variability between years and models - it would be a disaster if a company invested heavily in that only to realize there isn't a demand for mass production.
OBDfusion is a paid app - I am unable to connect to my ECU using any other OBD scan tool such as Torque- facile etc.Whic free scan tool do you recommend to try the 2000 /2001 Legacy ECU-thank you in advance-Brad
If you get a newer engine and ecu. Will the ecu have to have anything done to it? Be unlocked as some people put it? Thx! I have a 1970 standard beetle I would like to put a 2.2 or 2.5 standard or turbo.
+Jaime Willard the 2005+ Ecuador need to have the immobilizer with the harness. It's. A security feature that makes engine swaps a little trickier but still possible.
I have an opportunity to purchase a 2000 Subaru Legacy. Is this a good donor to convert my 70 Westfalia? If not, what do you suggest. Thanks! Obviously, we'll be doing business soon.
EJ25 ? 22 are good too (non interference design) ....Single Overhaead Cam is an excellent choice if in good condition...does it run well ? Miles ? compression ? Busaru's street figher bus is the same engine with subiarugears 5 speed....
I was hasty ripping out the wire harness from the parts car without marking anything and lost track and later may have cut stuff I might have needed. So Long story short I ended up having to buy a complete car and now going to go at it methodically .Sure would be nice if I could send the harness to you so you could do the deleting for me label shit and test it so it would be a slam dunk over here. I have a 2000 Impreza which is much similar to the 2000 Legacy. Please contact me if this is at all possible.we can use face book for our first contact.Be friend me Louie Forgett. Thanks
IDK, but my 99 legacy did not appear to have them...I do have the wire at the ECU. Check the pin out, and all you do is that to ground when you want to put it in test mode.
+bgswtdaddyliscious My business converts harnesses for swaps - people send them to me to convert. Sometimes I pull junkyard harnesses for people if they don't have a harness.
+Matthew Morrison You need something to control ignition timing and fuel injection. Usually that happens with the Subaru computer, which needs a harness to connect to its sensors and controls. You can go to a junkyard and get a harness or pay someone else to get one for you if all you have is an engine.
Just started with my wiring harness, would never had known how to try this without your UA-cam channel. THANK YOU

Really helpful dude on a project I am trying to troubleshoot, cheers.

+abe frohman That's exactly what I do for people. I wonder if I did his harness :)
+abe frohman oh yeah, about 10 years before my time. I love hearing about all the wild swaps.
I had my semi stock 1641cc motor poking along at the back of the pack but I wasn't doing clutch swaps every month either.
+abe frohman Ha! A 200mm clutch became a routine maintenance item with a high horsepower engine. I haven't seen that in normal driving but I bet in Baja style driving it would wear it out pretty quick.
I don't see the MAP sensor connection. Is that needed? Thanks so much for posting these videos!
could you possibly do a k20 motor with stock wiring harness and ecu wired into a 2003 VW beetle harness?
You my friend are a genius!

also, test mode connectors do not activate the fuel pump relay.

+dennis perusse I don't have a video series on the AC Vanagon but I do have an article series. It's on my website, top right side. Busaru.com
Busaru oh, ok.
Hey I don’t see wrx turbo on your website, I have motor in line ram just trying to down size the harness HELP PLEASE

+Forthwith Tx Thanks again for the input - much appreciated.
Are you able to do a harness from an 08 WRX? I pan swapped a Renault and would like to do a Subaru swap.
Hi do you sell these harnesses ready made?
hello, who scanner your used? i am have a subaru legacy 2000 2.0 and elm327 (blue) not working....
Do you have any stock maps for the 2000 EJ251 A11001A 0D42100605 - been looking for a while and unable to locate a base map and def for this ECU.Thanks Brad Legacy 2000 GX

+Jon Marshall Shoot me an email - busaru@busaru.com
Can you do a wire harness for 88 subaru turbo for swap to beetle .(eng EA82 turbo)
How much do you charge for a conversion
$430 but you can select different options so probably best to check our website: www.busaru.com/busaruparts/harnessconversion
Knowing that your experience with these harnesses is an advantage, how low does it take you to go through a harness such as this one from start to finish?
+Kevin Alberts about 8 hours.
i am surprised that no company has made a custom wire harness for this type of swap
+luke9511 from your perspective what would be the benefit?

How do you know what wires to keep and not to use
What do you suggest for PCV breather system - do you pcv delete or use same airbox and breather system - thanks-Brad

How mach extra trouble and cost is that? Thx again!!!
+Jaime Willard a good bit extra, I usually recommend going with an early 2000's harness.

Would you be interested in doing my harness for my bugaru

He offers that and I had to try to do it, next time, I am sending my harness to him....took me hours and hours...he's done many and he's fast....
Hi my name is Shane, I have a 2002 WRX 2.0 going into a 58 SC . Wondering if you could do my harness?
+Shane Rogers Absolutely - send me an email busaru@busaru.com
What do you mean by black box
I think he means fuse box
does 97 subaru have the test moode plugs
IDK, but my 99 legacy did not appear to have them...I do have the wire at the ECU. Check the pin out, and all you do is that to ground when you want to put it in test mode.
So you unboxed this harness, where do you get them? Do you pull them yourself? At a junkyard or?
What app is that on your ipad? Do you use certain (model, year) harnesses for bus, bug, and vanagon?
+bgswtdaddyliscious My business converts harnesses for swaps - people send them to me to convert. Sometimes I pull junkyard harnesses for people if they don't have a harness.
+bgswtdaddyliscious 1990- 2005 harnesses work the best. The app is OBDFusion - works great.
Do you absolutely need the harness? Let's say you can find an engine and don't go the donor car route.
Let's just say that you have only the engine
+Matthew Morrison You need something to control ignition timing and fuel injection. Usually that happens with the Subaru computer, which needs a harness to connect to its sensors and controls. You can go to a junkyard and get a harness or pay someone else to get one for you if all you have is an engine.
