The best Rochester. Word for word from the book. He is passionate, watch this time and again. Timothy Dalton is a wonderful actor, and interprets the part to perfection.
Yes, TD is a superb actor. Though the book presents Rochester as an "ugly man", why Celine Varens and Blanche Ingram were purely after his money. But allowances can be made in film making i guess. :)
Dalton is mesmerizing. The dialogue in this version is stupendous and his delivery, his speech is above all other versions. I also appreciated that this version had Jane’s thoughts spoken out loud.
I am very taken by his interpretstion. A perfect rrading. All of the man who is quirky as hell comes out Had a handsome husband with an even better voice. i am enjoying this discussion. Liked Orson Welles also
My fav Rochester! I love this version and it has been my favorite through the years. I love to hear Timothy talk. Zelah is very good as well. TV ministries are the best way to cover these classic tales.
The into music tugs at the heart, doesn't it? I listen to it and imagine Jane and Edward growing older, having grandchildren, passing away and life carrying on, their story told by their offspring when electric light is commonplace. And such a feeling takes over me....
I love how easily he is able to confide in her because he knows Jane won't judge him. Thanks for posting these. I love to be able to go to all the Jane/ Rochester interaction.
"I like this day. I like this sky of steel." (2:05) What he makes of that line, unmemorable in the book. From a cherished person, the anticipated condemnation doesn't come, and he feels a momentary exultation.

Notice how he allows her to keep sitting. Servants should always know their place. I know Jane was quite confused at the "equal" way he was treating her.
This was the part they did greatly well, was keeping the way the actual culture of that time thought and acted, and, she was in a quandary with it, trying to honor it, yet chafing against it too...
It's interesting how this version seems to give the impression Adele is Rochester's daughter. That's what one automatically assumes based on what he says, and it's not contested, unlike in other versions. Not in this scene, anyway. Btw I love Dalton's acting, there are so many facets and nuances to it. Here he shows Rochester's thoughtful, melancholic side.
Adele is not his daughter seriously. Her mom was one of Rochester’s lovers. Adele’s personality is way too shallow to be his. But his caring for Adele showing his kindness.

I feel as if he baited her to see if she would be a good mother. when he says thank you in the end I got more of that feeling. I could be wrong though.

I think all these are insightful comments, I think it is all of it, some baiting and testing out of his own fear, and some relieved gratitude for her responsive goodness to him and his predicament....
I think he felt somewhat embarrassed for being too presumptuous in regard to Jane, then finally realizing that its not just about him, but the innocent-helpless-parentless Adele.

So, wait, is Adele his daughter, or Celine's daughter with another man? That was never clarified. I haven't touched the book since i was 11. Can anyone tell me?
In the novel, Celine claims that Adele is Mr. Rochester's daughter but the latter denies it. Jane mentioned in the novel that Adele and Mr. Rochester don't share any of their resemblance implying that they're not related after all. In this version, there's an implication that Adele is Mr. Rochester's biological child but in reality it forgot to put some lines in the script where Mr. Rochester denies that he and Celine bore a child. Mr. Rochester doesn't seem too cruel towards Adele and he tried to have a conversation with her at least a little.
@@maineclayton2419 True. And this shows that Rochester has a good heart too - adopting Adele and bringing her to England "to grow up clean in the wholesome soil of an English country garden." (Chapter 15). :)
@@janeeyre-quotes I heard from a certain "Jane Eyre" podcast explained the reason why Mr. Rochester sent Adele to England is that she doesn't want to be like her mother who turns out to be a prostitute. Back in the 19th century, many ballerinas in France worked as a prostitute as their side-line and Celine is one of them. Mr. Rochester was naive to figure out that Celine loves him for his money and it was part of her job in working on a shady business. It was understandable why he had to make Adele move away from that terrible situation.
@@maineclayton2419Could be. But Rochester's reason wasn't really stated in the book except that since Celine was claiming that he's the father, then he might have felt obligated to take Adele. However, there's really no proof that he IS the father. And as he said in the book, he finds absolutely no resemblance between him and Adele and he highly doubts that he is the father.
Dalton is acting for the stage. He's a very similar performer to Lawrence Olivier... over annunciation, highly theatrical and very technical. My apologies to those who love his performance, but I find it very distancing and not terribly moving.
He is my Rochester, but I understand your point. I think he was trained as a classical actor, I also believe he had to overact at times to compensate for the coldness of Zelah (yes, I find her cold). Pity, for me, he could not have been paired with a different actress as Jane: maybe he would have delivered differently, especially in the proposal and leaving scenes
You’re absolutely right, and also both Olivier and Dalton have strong features, ideal for the stage, not as much for TV. But aren’t they so spot on with the tone they use in their phrases, honouring the English language and meanwhile stressing the hero’s thoughts and feelings through recitation? I used to push Oliviers performances away and then in an interview I realised he is a genius and a genuine servant of drama. A very multiverse man and a teacher. That is my humble opinion.
