Basic Introduction to 7 String Guitar

  • Here's a short, very basic introduction to 7 string guitars. Intended for those who are curious about playing a 7 string but have never picked one up before, afraid to get into it, or just don't know anything about them. I'm not a great guitar player by any means, so trust me when I say if I can do it, you can do it. Maybe a different way of looking at it is all that it takes. Hope this helps some of you out there. Thanks for watching.

Man, I have been playing a six string off and on for a little over 20 years and have had an itch to try a seven string about about 3 months now. This video was EXACTLY what I needed to give me the confidence that I could make the transition without having to relearn it like whole new instrument. THANK YOU!

I love a seven string guitar I actually have an Ibanez seven string. You can play pretty much the same stuff as you can play on the six string but I’ll go ahead and give you a little tip if you’re playing something on the E or the A string just muffle the B string. Because you’ll find that if you don’t you could accidentally hit the B string while you’re playing and it could mess you up. But if you muffle the B string. You can Strom chords all day long and actually hit the B string in is not gonna go through on the amp. You can get a seven string pretty reasonable nowadays if I were you I would get one with a fixed bridge though the floating Tamola in a seven string model is very difficult tune. A fixed bridge is a breeze to tune.

@@jeffreyburney6161 Thank you for the tips! I will definitely keep this stuff in mind. I am now trying to decide between a 7 string and a Baritone guitar. Any thoughts on that? Btw, i always get fixed bridge/string through body guitars.

Seriously, man. I bought my first 7 string about 6 months ago, and at first I was pretty intimidated to pick the damn thing up, but after playing it and getting comfortable, I fucking love it! There's so much you can do with it, especially with the extra low end. Like the man said, you just have to play it and get comfortable with it.. It's all cake from there.. Given that you've been playing a 6 string and you know what you're doing with it.

I bought 7string like six months ago. It took all month getting used to. I didn’t touch my 6 string guitar for month. Played everyday after 2 weeks I thought I was comfortable, I still didn’t know where I was at or the notes. On 6th fret is F , and 10th fret is A . I didn’t know I could play full C maj 7 using a basic bar chord on first fret and leaving G, B, E strings open! My favorite C chord if I’m in E minor. Now I get on 6 string feels little off at first, it’s quick doesn’t take long to realize the low string is E string

These Extended Range Guitars are actually the easiest to learn on because the 7th String is another B String. Fun fact the Low B String on the 7 String Guitar (and the 5 String Bass too) makes it easier to play what's written on the page because alot of the Music is going to be transposed to fit the ranges of other Instruments & singers especailly on Church Gigs. Extended range Guitars with up to 10 Strings (going all the way down to Low G# nearly 2 Octaves below a Standard Guitar) are a fantastic axe for Church Gigs cause you've gotta find the right key.

Great explanation! One correction, you were right when you explained that you can play 5ths on the low B and E just the same as you would play them on the E and A strings on a six string guitar. During your explanation you said that the B and E and the E and A are a 5th apart when actually they are a perfect 4th apart. Yes you can play 5ths on those strings but those strings are a perfect 4th apart. Anyone interested in learning more about this just look up musical intervals. Thanks for your video, you explained it really well.

I also wanted to say that the 7 string helped me understand scale patterns so much better because I could see the ENTIRE pattern (ie 3 whole steps, two half/whole and two whole/half) over the fretboard. After playing 7 strings I can now visualize the patterns on the six strings so much easier!!! An unexpected boon...I feel silly that I was intimidated at first, but came to realize it was actually easier in many ways!

@Shallex " I don't see how this is possible". I have to agree. I don't see how someone could possibly play the instrument for that long and not be able to name "ANY" of the notes. You would almost have to be making a conscious effort to not learn anything or have some kind of extreme learning disability. When I first read his post I thought: Come on... Seriously?
I can understand not getting into advanced theory like scales and modes or not being able to name some of the extended chords you run into for example. However anyone who's played enough over a 20 year period to become "good-great" should end up picking up the basics without even making an effort to. It's like saying I've played guitar for 20 years but I don't know what a power cord is. It just doesn't sound credible. I mean the guys literally on UA-cam watching a guitar lessons so...

There’s a lot to be said for playing by ear, amigo. Let your heart sing and fuck the rest who say you have to learn one way or the other.

Shallex why not just assume he meant not including those? you need to know those to tune the god damn guitar. your comment wasn’t necessary
