Another tip for touching up sprayed finishes and even bac rolled sprayed applications. Spray off into a can and use that paint for touch up. Everyone has problems touching up walls that are sprayed and even back rolled but they don't realize that the Paint is atomized and it changes the color slightly.

It’s the way the color flakes reflect light, when sprayed they are all standing up, if rolled they are all over the place

I punch a small hole through paint can just under the rim on opposite sides, then push a thick piece of straight wire with a bend 1" from one end right through the can. After painting withdraw the wire, wipe clean, refit through the holes then secure the lid. Simples!

    Short list of all hacks:
-Perfect corners on edges of house:
-Carpenter square, score line, frog tape over, clear caulk to seal, can paint over area, remove
    -Dual head tip extension
-Recessed or other lights: 9 inch paper, remove bulb, ball it up, put it in
-Drywall cut out, dust catch: 9 inch paper taped to wall, tape bottom edges to top, makes a . bowl
Handrail covering when paint ceiling: 9 inch paper over it all, on wall just covering it
-hold screws in little pouch made by 9 inch paper
-mud mix ball. Great and ez way to mix
-Hose whip, small extension for airless sprayer hose for more flexibility
-Replace spray tips every 20-30 gallons for fine finish
-Replace spray tips 60 gallons production tips
-Brush hook, hold brush onto bucket. 7/8 inch cup hook
-Fade paint out when stopping lines half way down
-Hot day, dry - latex extender slows down paint dry time, helps level out more, less brush strokes. 1.5 cap fulls per maybe quart of paint
-Stop paint gallons moving back of truck - ease up or zip walls in there
-Bucket cleaning- pour/brush out, then brush up sides so thin. Dries, do 4x times then leave in sun/peel easily
-Color spackle so can see it easily- add chalk for chalk lines
    -

Instead of trying to mash the paint out of the rim of the can with paper towel ... just use your brush! .. and so on. Thanks for sharing your secrets. ❤

Thanks for these tips. I have used a few of them and are pleased. gently flipping the roller has made my paint drops very minimal. Wetting the brush makes a lot of sense. I plan to carry the tape on my arm. I cannot remember how many times I left the roll of tape on the top of a high ledge or the top of a ladder. The corner plus paint roller seems like it could save me some "Cut-in" time. I am definitely going to try the spackle bag and adding the blue chalk. I dislike painting in tight spaces, but I like the "Fading" tip. Removing and lubricating the hinge pins sure seems better than spraying WD-40 on them without removing the pins. Using the Pivot ladder tool will make me look more professional than using a cinder block. Probably safer too. When your apprentice said that you need to work the paint into the brush rather than scraping it off, made me think how many times I dip and scrape and how much time it takes me to cut-in. I see where that tip and the rest of your tips will save me time. Time that I could be spending at home with my 14 pond fish, 7 cats, 2 dogs and 1 wife. Thanks again, Idaho Painter.

Have you guys ever put vaseline on the weather stripping after you’ve painted a front door when you don’t have time to wait for it to dry and you have to close it and leave ,and you don’t want the paint to come off on the stripping..? Or what about wrapping your brushes and rollers in a plastic bag and taking them home and putting them in the fridge overnight because your going right back into that same paint the next day..thats just a couple ive learned over the years..you have taught me allot of cool stuff that i never even thought of also…I freaking love the idea of screwing a hook into your brush to hang it on the side of your cut pot..lol

Best "hack" i know of not mentioned here: wet towel over the bucket im spraying or rolling out of. It keeps everything from drying (roller grids, sprayer hoses, bucket, even brushes). I can put a wet towel over over my cut in bucket with brush in it and take a long break. Easier to clean up everything, use old bath towels, terry cloth snd get them really wet, they hold a lot of water and keep everything moist, clean and fresh and seal much easier and better than anything else. I always keep a towel on the bucket im spraying out of now and always put a towel on a cut in/Rolling bucket when stopping for more than 5-10 min...

About that hook on the bucket to keep the brush out of the paint hack... They have clip on magnets you clip on your bucket and the metal ferrule of your brush sticks to the magnet... just another option if you don't wanna drill a hole into your brush. edit: I think having a hook poking out of the brush might scratch something or get in the way sometimes that's why I prefer the magnet ideal.

    Another great video Chris.
I only saw one issue that I feel needs more consideration.
You mentioned not nailing holes in the internal gutter/ lip of the paint can.
I’ve don’t this many times over several years and never had an issue.
It’s done with about 6-8 nail holes (definitely not drilled, as it will in fact drop metal flakes onto the paint), maybe 1cm apart, but only where your paint gets poured out of the can.
The paint then runs through those holes after pouring, to return to the paint can, and because it immediately coated the holes when running through them, there’s no chance of rust. Not even a slight chance.
Also, your friend suggested you lose the airtight seal. This was a pretty silly thing to say if he looks at how the seal works. He clearly doesn’t know, so shouldn’t be suggesting what he did.
Whilst on this topic, I always pour out the back of the can, so as any paint that might spill down the side, doesn’t cover the name and details of the paint if I ever need to buy more.
Thanks for another great video! 👍👌👏

Ive used GRACO sprayers since 1994. Can't go wrong with them. I prefer the High Boy myself because i can roll it around outside with a 5 hanging on it. Also, pop the little tint access top on the lid and drop your siphon tube and rock catcher down through it and seal the bucket lid. That way you minimize the chance for spills as well as protect the paint from drying out or having leaves etc. blowing into the paint in the bucket.
Another tip when spraying, always try to keep your gun perpendicular to what you are spraying to eliminate shadowing. I also recommend having your tip positioned so that you can spray with the gun parallel to the ground in a horizontal fassion as it makes spraying perpendicular at a 90 degree angle much easier. Your wrist naturally moves more efficiently that way as well. Some guys like to hold the gun vertically and it works for them, but i think horizontal is a better way to go if you are just learning.
It is generally a good idea to cross hatch your spray pattern, meaning vertically spraying with a 50% overlap and then spraying horizontally also with a 50% overlap. Keep your motions fast and fluid being mindful of maintaining that 90 degree perpendicular positioning of your gun.
When it is freezing at night and if your keep your sprayer where it might be exposed to those temps, it is a good idea to flush out all the water in the system including hose and gun with paint thinner as it will not freeze. Simply prime the pump with paint like you normally would and pump out thinner into a cut can. The thinner will not mix with paint or water and will always sit on top of any paint or water. Simply save your thinner by pouring it back into its original container to be used again. This also works with oil paints and primers. Let it sit overnight and the solids will settle to the bottom of the can leaving cristal clean thinner on top. Pour that into original container to be used again and again.
Finally, airless and HVLP sprayers are a painters best friend! You can't go wrong if you know how and when to use them! Good luck!
