- Photo finish! Photo finish! Neptune Collonges beat Sunnyhillboy in the closest-ever Grand National finish. The grey, a 33-1 chance ridden by Daryl Jacob, got up in the last stride to win and give champion trainer Paul Nicholls his first win in the big race in 53 previous attempts. A horse of class and, when you revisit the first circuit of that race, one of the most lucky Grand National winners
......the last of the true Nationals before the castration of the fences....
I absolutely love Grey horses. Used to ride one when I was young. Nicklaus Silver was a Grand National winner. Desert Orchid was one of my favourites 🐎
Kautos wingman , Neptune could stay all day loved seeing him win here
I could be talking out of my pocket as I backed him at 33's after he won the Thyestes, but I still maintain On His Own would have would have gone very close if the loose horse hadn't distracted him at Becher's. Subsequent Graded winner and Gold Cup runner up, horse who was still on the upgrade through handicap ranks at the time, and running off a mark over a stone lower than his subsequent peak.
That was a rough race. Although we know that According To Pete and Synchronised lost their lives, at Fence 12 (the same fence where Synchronised got hurt) it looks like another horse was injured - maybe Killyglen? Can't find any record which confirms this.
Apart from Synchronised and According to Pete no horses were injured in any serious way. Giles Cross was pulled up before the 11th (the fatal fence for Synchornised) but he was fine and ran again-
Had it at 33/1 just missed 40s
The greatest national ever.
What number was it
I have never seen a crazier haired race than this!
I was there had sunnyhillboy was gutted lol
Blame the jockey
@@jasonkane4742 looked a sure winner turning the elbow
Aye and if he would have pulled the whip sooner he would have won if it was McCoy ud been quids in
Daryl gave Neptune the best ride
