I have been going to Midland for most of my life. I have grand parents, aunts, uncles and cousins that live there. I remember what it was like in the early 1980's and I see what it has become today. It definitely is a place that you have to love in order to live there. Years ago my grandparents lived at the corner of Lockheed and Northrup. Beautiful neighborhood, but the only thing to do in the area as a kid was to go several blocks down to the park. Which in the 1980's was a swing set, a merry go round, a slide and a set of monkey bars all of which were solid metal and would either burn you or give you tetanus.

Well, it just snowed in Grapevine Texas, which is very close to Odessa. But it’s not like Canada in Canada that is cold that cuts to the bone. I have the rare opportunity and privilege to work with Canadians on a mission when I was in the military. They flew their twin otter planes, and when we had our snow here in Texas, it was nothing to them and I felt very safe lying with them if that tells you anything friend.

As a gen z (25 years old) while I did enjoy the less traffic and the chance to start my career, make money on the side, as well as the few people I met, I just couldn't stay there long term. Apart from going to restaurants and bars, there really isn't much else to do sadly. No mountains to hike, not many concerts stop there, and not many places to do indoors (because Midland can be very hot most of the year). I ended up driving to Dallas almost every other weekend because of how bored I was on weekends.
There's definitely so much potential Odessa-Midland could have with the amount revenue from the oil production, just needs the right people/government to make it happen.
Another thing was, because majority of the city has an older population, I often would get looked/talked down on while I'm at the store shopping or at a restaurant in terms of interacting with people. That doesn't define the city as a whole, but its something that somewhat made me feel like I didn't belong there.
I live in Atlanta, GA now, so all of that is behind me, but nevertheless, I did enjoy my time there and I plan on visiting again to catch up with some friends I met.

Thanks for the share. Glad you’re in a spot that you’re happy with.
I will say there are quite a few artist that come out here. The Tailgate and Basin Brunch are doing a great job of getting people out. Clay Walker was just here and Lil Jon was here this summer. I think the Weekend was here this week. Pat Green and Dababy and Sam Riggs will also be here. That’s a pretty good line up.

Let me add that bringing children to their public school From Maryland, New Jersey, and others is something to look into.
Brought my kids from Maryland August 2022 and had to return them to maryland in January 2024.
Maryland teachers did not believe they were in America. They have to actually check out the name of the school.
    NOT ENOUGH TEACHERS.

Anytime I have clients come in from out of town, I always have them check out the schools here. It is sometimes a shock for folks. They are working on it. There are some good alternatives but they are very competitive. Sorry to hear about your kids.

Its not what it use to be. I miss the small town feeling Midland use to have. Everybody's so angry now. Its sad actually to see it now. The traffic is terrible bc the influx of people.

This is true but things are adapting. There are growing pains with everything. Unfortunately I don’t think we’re going back to the old town feel but I’m excited to see the area adapt and grow. Lots of businesses and leaders stepping up to take advantage of opportunities and help the city.

Friend up and watching your videos for a while I have a question. My question is I just watched a video that was a year old from the news channel in Midland boasting on you downtown area with even supposedly your ability to walk around with an alcoholic drink in your hand. So did that not happen? Did the nightlife they promised fall flat? What really is going on? The reason I ask is I am toying with moving there. Thank you friend.

    • @JacobeKendrick

Our downtown has come a long way. They have totally revamped it. Centennial Park is down there now, great restaurants, and we also have a micro market down there now. It is a great area to have some fun, it’s just not like in bigger cities.

Midland is a boom town. If you’ve been born here like I have you spend your youth working to leave. You’re in the middle of no where and the “small town” vibe that was once here has left. Midland tried to be the new Dallas and Houston 10 years ago when oil was $100 + a barrel and there was a lapse in generation gaps. It failed miserably. Housing has skyrocketed to ridiculously insulting amounts. Growing up houses that were worth 80k grossly became over priced to 120+. When the markets and economy crashes you’re stuck with an 80k price house u bought for 120k+ that will NEVER BE WORTH WHAT YOU PAID FOR IT. My first apartment was in the complex of ‘A’ street across from 7-11 off the Loop. In 2002 that apartment rented for $405 a month. That EXACT SAME SPACE is now over $1100 a month. For a view of the loop and stick and dirt. With there being nothing to do here that gives law enforcement A LOT to do bc when people get bored here they get in trouble. I once had some young girl brag about getting “bottle service” at a “club” in midland. This club was across the street from Walmart in a shopping center. I cramped from laughing so hard and told her “oh oh honey. That’s not bottle service. You just bought a bottle in a shopping center with a booth that they call a ‘cabana’ Either way you still just only got drunk in Midland.” This guys pretty much says it all. Unless you’re born here there’s nothing here to do. Seriously nothing. Even if you have a job. Congratulations you’ve got a job… in the middle of nowhere. Also we are still in a rut downtown of “good ole boy” laws and order. Once upon a time before the internet and information was a thing we wrote our own laws here. We are currently experiencing the backlash of that. Believe me this ain’t no Water Wonderland anymore and it never will be again.

True statement that a lot of workers live in rv parks or man camps but half the population is not even close. Midland’s population has been stable for quite some time, always landing north of 100,000.
