As someone who lives in Odessa, this is such an odd video to come across, cause there’s so many things I can look at here and go “hey I can go drive there right now”
Luckily I wasn’t born in Odessa I was born in Lubbock but I’ve lived here since 3 and hate this place with every ounce in my body it’s horrible here. And so is all the republicans people here too.
i’m a highschool student at odessa college and it’s super cool to go to that school with the globe theatre being used for all kinds of stuff, like every award ceremony is at the globe theatre
Odessa College is where a stock pond and windmill used to be in the fifties and sixties. We used to go swimming there. I still remember the old rancher. Nothing was east of Grandview and twenty seventh Street.
Great video. I love Odessa and lived there for over 17 years before being transferred by Texas Instruments to Sherman, TX back in 1998. My two kids grew up there and both are UTPB graduates. Miss it.
I love these last two videos. I saw a huge poll the other day asking what is the worst town someone has been to, and the number 1 answer was odessa/midland. I never believe in things like that as I travel around the country, and there are cool places, cool people, and fun things to do everywhere. You showed that today. Sure, Odessa isn't some big touristy place with beautiful scenery, but it's still a great texas city with great people, good food, and fun things to do. Adventure is everywhere in America and everywhere in Texas. From the top way up in Dalhart, all the way down to Brownsville. If you cant find fun things to do and see then you aren't looking.
@karatekid6026 what made it bad? I haven't been there but I just looked it up on my maps and instantly found tons of activities to do. It looks like a fun place to me. You have outdoor fun in every direction
There is but you got to avoid the people its a bizarre town. DRUGS. Its next to a penitentiary and people that get out tend to loiter there. It just has a bizarre atmosphere.@@nomaderic
I was born and raised in Odessa, graduated from PHS in 87. I grew up attending First Baptist where my dad sang in the quartet with Larry Johnson. It's great getting to see this glimpse of home now that I live way out in East Texas.
Thanks for the Odessa video! I kept watching hoping to see you go to Ratliff Stadium! Too bad the game wasn’t there instead. I was born and raised in Odessa and started going to football Permian football games as a toddler in 1975-different stadium then. It was my sophomore year at Permian when Buzz Bissinger hung around Odessa in preparation to write his book and graduated from Permian in 1991. I moved away for college, got married, my folks moved and I’ve lived in Michigan for almost 25 years now. Thanks for the memories!
Wow! This brings back a ton of memories. I was able to quickly point out a bunch of places your camera captured, even though I haven't been there in forty five years. The crater was much deeper and more obvious as a child and it's hard to believe it's filled in so much. The way I hold my tortilla, is by making sure two fingers pinch the opposite end I'm eating on and I prop it up with my thumb, so it all stays in, but I can still move it around, while chowing down. Your Three Amigos technique of beans 🫘 shooting out one end, is a losing battle. What's really interesting about the presidential museum, was that it was for the longest time housed in the downtown library. So, it's cool to see that it has been placed in a facility all to its own. In Jr high, we got to go to the Globe Theatre 🎭. There was a symphony there and it was my first time to hear such a marvelous thing. The giant Jack Rabbit was born in 1962, which is too cool and I won't say why. We moved to Corpus Christi the summer I would have started high school at OHS. But, after seeing the beach and lots of water, I never wanted to go back and I became a beach bum, living in a bungalow in Port Aransas and Rockport. Rockport as you know got tore to pieces by hurricane Harvey. If you keep heading West to El Paso, could you please find my stone dam 🦫 I built when I was 12, under the overpass near Pecos? I'm told it backed up enough water that it's now an oasis. When you find it, it's name is Willie's Dam. If it's still there, it's 49 years old and needs a state historical marker near it. 😅
Came to Odessa over 5 years ago telling myself I will only live here for one year max. Well I'm still here. Well it does not help that a lot of my family and old friends live here. Also we're close to the border so a weekend trip to Mexico is always nice.
visit Odesa in Ukraine, there is a wonderful old architecture, theater, sea. it is true that the beaches are mined because of russian aggression... but there is still beautiful architecture and sea and excellent service, now is the season of discounts😏
I randomly came across this now that I just moved away, warms my heart. It's funny when you recognize people on a video like this lol. Now as far as the presidential museum, I've never been (big regret) and now I think it may have been replaced by the art museum.
I love this dude, almost every person who has done a video on West Texas beats it up. But this dude doesn't act like the standard is San Antonio. I just love the stench when I come near Odessa, I know it sounds weird but it just screams home to me. I has born in West Texas and I'm staying in west texas. I just noticed he went to the bistro, I used to love their frys.
What year did this come out? I was looking at your Lubbock video because im going to move there from Odessa lol. I really dont like it here but its crazy to see it on a video. I hope youll update your Lubbock trip!
I'm doing the opposite. Over lived in Lubbock for a decade and might get a job in Odessa. People on reddit say that Lubbock is better than midessa. Did you move? What's your opinion?
@@millenialmusings8451 I moved... And let me tell you it was the best decision I've made! Everything is way cheaper (so I can actually afford rent) , there's more to do, literally so many nice people which is a huge difference, it's greener and even a little less hot with more rain! And it's easy to drive with how big roads are..it never feels crowded I think the only thing is the job market. It's harder to land a job and get paid well.. But since I work from home that isn't really a problem, it just took awhile for my room mate to get a job out here. That being said, Odessa does have more opportunities because of the oil field, but if you're not going into that field I don't suggest it because then otherwise it's hard to find a job. Midland is the better city if you do consider going down there. Just because there's more to do! It might be easier to find a job too if you don't want Odessa's oil field jobs.. But it's very busy and the rent is soooo high compared to Lubbock. For instance, in Odessa we paid 1300 to live in a 2 bed, 1 and a half bath townhouse that was so poorly damaged we were just waiting to finally leave. Now we live in a 900 2 bed 2 and a half bathroom where the upkeep is amazing! Sorry for the spill but I hope this helps!
Nice! I live in Odessa. Y’all did your research! There were a few other gems but can’t fit everything. Glad you got to go to a game. Permian vs Odessa High School would have been top tier and fully packed! Our 2 high schools are dead rivals. Wish you should more of the bands and the marching! Great video.
I know exactly what year this was! I was in that Mojo band. Grew up here in Odessa and can say I prefer a small town than the big cities. You should definitely watch Permian vs. OHS game. The stadium gets packed with people. Also, the asado (pork in sauce) is red from the Chile. No coloring just the beautiful color of the Chile peppers. Fun fact: Chef Alejandro has recently competed in Chopped and won!
Went back many years ago with my wife’s family from Abilene. Their first comment was that it smelled (oil and natural gas) and my reply was that’s what money smells like.
Native Texan, been in Odessa for the last 20 years, only three things to do here. Your options are work like a dog, get drunk and/or play golf..... and I don't drink and I don't play golf. Anything you buy locally is three times the price, and you'd best learn to speak spanish if you want to order breakfast. It's hot as hell except when it's freezing cold, trash and beer cans everywhere, plastic bags flapping in the mesquite. If you need to work and put your kids through college you can get it done here, other than that, it's a dusty dirty shithole of a town that's literally in the middle of nowhere. Any doctors are here only because they had a low GPA and couldn't get anything better. Wife had cancer, they gave her antibiotics for nearly six months before they finally figured out she had a tumor the size of a lemon. She died a few years ago. So if you get hurt or sick.....good luck. And good luck on the Permian Basin roads as well. You're more likely to get mangled or killed in a wreck than you are on your oilpatch job working around high pressures and poison gas. Several major crashes on a daily basis. Don't get me wrong, there's lots of good hardworking folks here. But I recently retired hence no further reason to stay, time to sell the house and get the hell out of Odessa Tx. Never been up to the northwestern U.S., think I'll go see it.
There’s a lot not included in this video like the tradition of the Chuckwagon Gang who serve up food to thousands at a time in good West Texas hospitality. We also have the rodeos that come to town and the other community theaters in the area. We have art museums and live performances by nationally renowned artists at the Wagner Noel Performing Arts which is half way between the towns. We have everything you have in a large city only on a smaller scale.
