Trying out a new video format that is aimed at being MUCH easier to watch/make/edit, potentially seeing a huge variety of games, particularly games that make it on the Game Gengo tier lists, showcasing how they are, why they are good, etc. Hope you guys enjoy! There's still lots to improve with this format so please feel free to let me know if there is anything you want more/less of!
@@moggless I was curious myself so I tried looking it up and eventually found it, it's a browser extension. If you look it up like this "10ten Japanese Reader (Rikaichamp)", you'll find it.
@@ABlob wow, thanks friend but it seems if i highlight a compound kanji i could not switch to the next kanji using a keyboard shortcut unlike rikaikun. i had to manually do it using a mouse, maybe im wrong but other than that its excellent.
Do you have to purchase the Japanese version or is this a game that you can purchase in English and then change your language/region on your switch for the Japanese version?
Wow, no furigana on 夥しい (おびただしい) in this game, they go hard for reading for sure. Good thing they have the Text Log with AUDIO as you mentioned -- looks like a great game, and a great game for Japanese! (also your point about having no furigana actually being better, because they do have audio, in on point). Loving the writing on the screen in this new series! Hitting tons of great games with this type of series would be awesome!
Totally agree on benefiting from not having furigana in lieu of replaying audio to catch the reading. Ive been using Satori Reader with furigana on but now I’m turning it off since you can replay the audio as well.
This video is not only great for actually learning Japanese, but I think it's great for a few other reasons: 1. It shows you doing the actual nitty-gritty process you go through while actually playing the game in full, explaining everything about how and why you'd do it. This makes it easy to copy. (This video made me a believer of kanshudo, even as a jisho guy!) 2. Watching someone else do your hobby feels fun and parasocial! Sometimes you feel too lazy to do something yourself and just want to spectate someone else doing it, you know? (eg video game Let's Players) 3. Encouraging! Watching how often you come across words you don't know and especially how easily you allow yourself to say "I'm never gonna need this word! LOL" makes me feel a lot better about how often I come across words I don't know. I like that you're not trying to pretend like you're the master of all of Japanese or even want to be (like...other Japanese-teaching UA-camrs who I'll not mention lol) Please keep up the great work!
I've been mulling over getting this game for while, so now I can evaluate the game play and learn some Japanese. It's a win win. Thanks for the hard work as always.
@@GameGengo I thought it was going to be more like Octopath Traveler that I couldn't really get into, but the voice acting is so helpful for the Japanese in this game and once I saw the fighting was like Fire Emblem...I was sold. This has been very helpful 👍🏼
That's the magic of languages at 51:00 right there. Didn't know the vocabulary 身代金 but from context with "from rich people" in the front and the fact that the Kanji are Body 身, Replace 代 and Money/Gold 金 it was easy to assume that it meant "ransom" aka money you want in exchange for someone. Doesn't always work of course but still nice :D One can see how much work and joy went into making this video. Learned a lot, thanks!
Before listening to it, I read it as "shin dai kin" turns out it is "mi の shiro kin". Not sure why there's no の hiragana in 身代金 so I just assumed it's full onyomi reading 😅
Seeing Matt perplexed on how 名門 (lit. famous gate) could mean a ‘prestigious family’ really reminds me how a strange position for a native chinese speaker like me trying to learn japanese. The hurdle is kanji as well, but oddly it’s for i basically know them all, just not by their proper onyomi’s. To the extent that a japanese newspaper is nearly intelligible to me, or any chinese guy with nearly no japanese knowledge. It messes with my head so much that i just purposely try to learn japanese through english, strangely :D
btw 名門 is very much a chinese thing. it literally referring to one’s family background by their house gate (家門). also 門第 (lit. door ranking) is the rank of the most prestigious families. the usage dates back to like 6AD, from late East Han dynasty.
very cool perspective.. as a native english speaker with an intermediate level of japanese reading capability, its funny to look at a wall of chinese text and be able to recognize a few "kanji" (not sure what chinese script is called) here and there. It's like being able to pick out a few basic concepts while having no ability to pronounce them aside from what they might translate to in japanese.
I’ve been studying for about 4 years. Whenever I’ve tried consuming native material I get so overwhelmed my new vocab and kanji. Watching your process is so helpful and encouraging. I’m going through the prologue right now and being mindful of how many new cards I make. In the past I’d make cards for everything and get burnt out so fast. Do you know many natives that struggle with games that use a lot of old language like this? (My friends in Japan don’t play games😅)
Major props for showing off your learning process for uncommon or high-level terms; I've been trying a similar method myself, and it's validating to see a version of it here that works for someone way more familiar with the language than I am so far!
Thanks so much! Actually it will become a staple on the channel very soon where i go through the top 100 or so games for learning Japanese, however go through it completely through the lense of a learner not teacher, just like this Triangle Strategy video, so I hope you enjoy that! Id love to hear what you think!
I really love it when you read along and check the word and stuff, it much easier to follow since I can see the word meaning in English while you explain it. Keep up the good work, really love this type of video!
Just finished watching this video (a bit late haha) and i honestly think this is one of the best experiences i've had in this channel. Now, i wanna be clear. I LOOOVE this whole channel and pretty much every series in it, the jlpt N5 and N4 grammar videos were the things that really got me to a level where i can have the courage to play games in japanese which is a method i've wanted to use, much because Akira Sensei from japanese quest and this channel are my biggest inspirations and becasue i love video games too, and pretty much every video you put out helps me in any way or another. But this one specifically, since I'm currently playing through 13 sentinels (also recommended by you), hit me with so much joy for seeing someone essentially going through the same "workflow" as me (i know i'm not the one who invented it btw) because things do feel overwhelming sometimes and i did ask myself if i was doing something wrong but that went away so easily after watching a couple of minutes and seeing that a guy that i respect so much also goes through the same. I legitimately can't thank you enough for inspiring me so much and you, as well as Akira Sensei, are the most important people in my japanese journey. ^~^
I just started out a similiar concept on my own channel and was looking through the Internet for others who are doing the same that I can connect to. It's nice to sit in the student's seat from time to time as well. :) This game seems simply amazing for Japanese studies and it definitely ranked up in my list of games to get ASAP. You have a lot of good energy in the video, really liking that.
Only watching this now but I really like this format. It is cool to show how you do this. It is also a very intense Japanese game :D I am not at this level yet.
Great video. Love your channel. By the way if you have an iPhone/iPad there’s a dictionary app called Nihongo (blue and green color icon) which has a feature of scanning any Japanese text through your phone camera and it will show you the meaning of every word/character in a similar way to yomichan. The OCR feature is only available by paid subscription but it works for me very well when playing games on my Nintendo switch.
Thanks for the app recommendation! I've been using Google Translate ocr feature and it was great until recently they suddenly changed it, and now it's totally inconvenient so I've been looking for something to replace it
Great video! For me this kind of format is really benefical, because i get to learn a lot of new vocab and can create high quality anki cards directly from the video. Thats even easier thanks to the script you provide for the video, which i greatly appreciate so thanks for that! You said, you may continue with other games in the future and I would love to see more of these videos. Also, I am strongly considering getting this game, you really sold me on it (草)
Love this video. I've been really curious of how you go through games yourself, and if you take it step by step. This strategy is something I've been wanting to try! Thanks!
Thank you for the video! Actually, it's my favorite format so I really hope we'll see more of those to come and it's nice knowing it takes less resources to make~ Btw, do you consider streaming here or on Twitch maybe?
Absolutely amazing video!! Hesitating to buy and play the game for myself, but now that I see it could be such an amazing support for Japanese learning, I'm even more tempted! I've heard the game has a very huge amount of story telling and text though. I'm also currently trying to master N3 before moving onto N2, so would you say it's a good idea to study using this game despite my average level at Japanese, or should I wait a bit more? I fear it might be mentally exhausting to have to translate so many of those words that I don't know... (I haven't finished watching your video yet so sorry if you answer this question later in it WOOPS)
Hey Matt! Thanks for the video. This game looks incredible for learning. Would you mind sharing the links to the dictionaries you used? I could find Kanshudo and know Yomichan, but "Tenten" returned nothing. Thanks!
Thanks so much for enjoying the video! Ill actually be making more videos in this style more relaxed chill playthrough! Fire emblem is certainly one id love to play! Also that new musuo game looks cool too!
