- This is another video in my series “New Forest Walks” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode I visit Castle Hill (located on the edge of the village of Woodgreen.... a couple of miles North East of Fordingbridge....right in the North West corner of the New Forest).
My 3 mile circular route starts at the Castle Hill Forestry Commission car park where I experience spectacular views over the River Avon Valley and Breamore to the West. I head South along a ridge and get to explore the earthworks of the ancient Ringwork & Bailey Castle before heading down towards Folds Farm, where I divert in to the countryside across beautiful meadows & woodland.
After spotting a pretty Roe deer in a field, I head into some woods & I pass around the edge of Frankenbury Camp (an Iron Age Hillfort). The route takes me to the back of the Sandy Balls Holiday Centre and then over more meadows in to the Firs Close Copse & Long Ground Copse Nature Reserve.
An uphill climb takes me up an escarpment, through the Godshill Woods Inclosure & back to my original starting point.

Thank you David. Glad that you are enjoying the series.
Good morning Dave such an interesting video very enjoyable enjoying the history of the new forest
Thanks Craig. Amazing how much history around there in such a small area!
Love the videos Dave. Having grown up just outside the new forest near the village of Landford, it’s nice to see familiar walks, discover new walks and learn about the history of places I’ve know since I was a child through your videos. I enjoy all of your videos but the new Forest ones in particular. Keep it up!
Thank you Richard. Glad that you are enjoying the series.
Memories of lovely warm summer days always welcome at this time of year. I've often wondered why it's called Castle Hill - now I know. Thanks Dave.
Thanks Angela. It is a super place to explore, for sure!
Amazing wooded area in the countryside

Looks a lovely walk, hopefully might bump into you and Logan one day
Thanks Ed. Some great views across the River Avon from Castle Hill for sure. Thanks for watching.
Such a pretty place Dave .You keep out doing yourself. Beautiful video👏🏻
Thank you Melissa. A reminder of warmer days!
Wow - evolution by synthesis - there's a thought to conjure with!! If Logan sights a deer will he chase after it or does he just confine himself to squirrels and butterflies? Thanks for sharing your walk. Enjoyed the exploration of Castle Hill and the beautiful views and meadows.
Thanks Jean. Logan is very good in that he doesn't chase deer. Indeed I was filming a clip of him walking in a wood last week where you can see deer run across the screen in front of him and he just stands still.
Was just wondering if any of the walks could be done with e-bikes? Be nice if they could be marked as e-bike friendly?
I believe that there are byelaws in the New Forest covering cycles limiting them to designated cycle tracks and bridleways but I am no expert .... you would need to check! I know very little about E-bikes I am afraid so I am not sure what the "rules" are. Fortunately Logan & I just concentrate on walking! I would say though that there were a number of stiles on this particular walk, if that is of any help? Thanks for watching.
