    I fenced my yard 23 years ago.i put my 4x4 post in the ground using only dirt and gravel.i have 21 post and so far only 1 has rotted at the ground.i cut a treated 2x4 cut to 3 ft.i put a point on it using my circular saw.drove it in beside the 4x4 and secured it with screws.worked great.

      That's a good approach, but if the end of the broken fence post is embedded in concrete, as is the case in the video, you can't use your method unless you break off and pull out the section of concrete on the side of the post away from the fence pickets. While that might be doable too, by the time you've done that, the amount of effort winds up being similar to driving in a couple EZ Menders instead.

    Great video, thanks so much! I just went to home depot today and picked up six of these strong ties. Our fence is 30 years old and I can't afford to replace it. I think this might be the solution I've been looking for! Thanks again!

    I am glad I found your vid; great how to. I had already purchased the brackets; looking for someone that showed how they did it since I had concerns. Your vid is exactly what I needed. I will put what you did into practice when I install in coming days. Appears from the number of reviews and 97% positive comments you gave some practical advise. Just the reason I use UA-cam. Thanks for taking the time.

    I've used several of these menders on my fence with only one per post instead of two, but your video just showed why my attempts to use these were barely sufficient. I have three more to repair and will use these ties on the sides of the posts rather than the front/back. I plan on adding a second tie to the posts with only one and use your bolt method to draw them together and make the end result "a more sturdy post". Your sharpening method will be used, since I have an angle grinder ready to go. Thank you again for taking the time and trouble to make and post this information. Whoever would have the nerve to leave anything negative should make a video of their idea, or just shut up. The negativity does not help, and if I could afford to, would replace the posts. This is the next best solution. I subscribed to your channel, Mr. Hartman, and greetings from Louisiana!

      @@HandyDoc It makes me wonder why some individuals have this need to voice their displeasure of a person's video material to thousands of people that they don't even know. Apparently it does something for their psyche. I'm a nurse, and it doesn't make me feel good on the inside to leave negative comments for someone's video - even if deserved. ....I'd be concerned that the 'scoop' for hammering on would funnel water against the post causing more rot.....Personally, I would lather roofing tar up the post before hammering in the repair brackets.......( I live in a wet climate ).....

  • @parallelburrito
    @parallelburrito 5 років тому

    Nice demonstration of this product but I'm not a fan of them. You could have replaced the entire post just as fast with the right technique. Support fence on both sides, take sawzaw to cut stringer fasteners from post, dig out post, set new post, attach new post to stringers. If you really want to get fancy you can take some aluminum or galvanized flashing and wrap the post where it transitions to the ground. This prevents the microbes in the soil from contacting the post and rotting it out. I never do this on a repair thought because you are usually only trying to get a few more years out of the fence anyway.

    That’s cool.
    I tried this once before on a rotted one. Ended up adding some concrete around the bottom of the post in the ground due to no original concrete. Hate digging up posts. Ones without concrete are the worst if they rot off at ground level and below. Can’t get a chain around them to jack them out.
    I’ve seen videos like this one, even saw a lady in Australia doing a repair with a 2x one meter long piece of steel straps about an inch wide and 1/8” thick. Hammered them down and screwed them with a handful of deck screws. It worked too.
    This one looks stronger though.
    One day somebody will start marketing new 4x4 posts with steel already attached to the posts before concreting in the ground. A true 50 year fence.
    Hmmm.
    Maybe I should try that? Lol

    It's not a bad idea but it doesn't look good at all and in my experience I've gone to customers homes who try these and they don't work that well. I just dig a hole close to the rotted post. Use quickcrete and a new Post. Then I cut my top and bottom rails on one side and screw them in. Then I just take the boards off the other side put on new top and bottom rails and put the boards back on. Takes about an hour and happy customers are the result. I basically just offset the post.

    • @HandyDoc
      @HandyDoc  4 роки тому

      Johnny s ,
      Hey Johnny, I’m glad you system works for you. Maybe I’m not understanding but if you dig a hole close to the old post, the horizontal rails won’t reach the new post. You could buy longer rails for one side. I have done about 8 of the product I am suggesting and they are all still solid as a rock, some done 4 yrs ago. I have a large fenced yard and I know I am postponing the inevitable, but it’s saving me big bucks for now.

    • @johnnys4782
      @johnnys4782 4 роки тому

      @@HandyDoc yes that's exactly what I'm saying. You just offset the post and buy a couple 10 ft 2x4s for the others side. As long as the ground is not hard as a rock its a quick fix and looks good. I do it frequently for customers and it takes about 30 minutes. I've had customers use those post saver's and they work for a while but eventually they loosen up and your back it the same boat. Just think when you drive those in your breaking the existing concrete if any and if there is no concrete then your just driving in a big stake that will eventually loosen up. Nice video though.
