    You just reminded me to check my catch cans on my g37s lol 😅 went and bit the bullet on this one and went with the mishimoto 👍🏽 I dont like where the can sits 🤔 figured it would of been in a better location.

      Oh yeah I’m not a fan of where it sits either. It really doesn’t fit in there well with the factory charge pipe and diverter valves. Just too tight

    Unfortunately with the cheaper designed OCC's you will catch oil but closer to like 35-45% were as the 200+ catch can catches closer to 97-98%. It will likely take another 20k miles before needs another cleaning so you bought yourself some time. That looks like a authentic Add 1 brand catch can minus the eye candy anodized colored parts and the CF inlay. Add1 charges $225 to 350 for their Chinese designed and manufactured OCC so in the regards it's the way to go.

      The BMS is the same unit and they are just price gouging I guess because BMW people typically just want to pay more for stuff. US companies just contact this Chinese machine shop/CNC warehouse company overseas and pick the options they want and tolerances then market it as their own.

    • @SpeedCultureStudios

      That’s exactly right. This happens a lot in the aftermarket. Headers, intakes, test pipes etc across all makes and models run into this. Produced at the same plant by the same machines by the same people and before it leaves different stamps or badges are put on along with higher prices.

      Catch cans are very simply designed-cheap or expensive-and function very similarly from one to the other. Oil weight doesn’t change depending on the make/brand of the catch can. So to say cheap ones catch 40% while expensive ones catch 90% is a pretty bold statement.
      Essentially, the catch can is pulled under a slight vacuum thanks to the “suction” from the intake. Blow by and gases from the valve cover pass through the can, while the weight of the oil allows it to settle. The vacuum is not strong enough to prevent the oil from settling and the baffling catches anything that might “try” to escape.
      Even a can with no baffling will catch oil and the the very best baffling will still let some through. The problem is that there is no real accurate way to determine just how much blow by there was without the can in place making it nearly impossible to determine what percentage is being caught. A simple catch can is better than no catch can-a can with baffling is better than one without. A can with “expensive” baffling and fancy colors-well that’s up to the consumer.

      @@SpeedCultureStudios Also, the oil in the crankcase from the action of the moving parts at high RPM's turns the oil into a fine mist like water vapor in the air. A baffle plate or a screen won't catch most of this content. The airflow coming into the OCC isn't flowing oil like it pours out of the oil bottle. This is why insufficiently designed OCC's catch more like the 40% or less compared to a properly build/designed OCC that catches much higher like 90% plus. How you tell your catch can is working well is after you spent all that time cleaning your intake valves/intake chambers/throttle body in your case, you then go back in 15-20K miles and see the results. If you have oil content and carbon buildup in excess or more than what is acceptable to you then your choice of OCC was not the best. If I was a OCC manufacturer, I would have all these results and testing done on my product where I would advertise this plus I would show the honest results from my competitors as I would test them too. Hopefully, the end result and goal is to have it work very well, but today we live in the time where money and profit is better than actual results and function. JLT is a good company that rigorously tests their products and buys the other companies products and test them too so they can build a better product and learn in the process. JLT makes quality OCC but they don't have a pre-built OCC for the Q50-Q60.

      @@SpeedCultureStudios In addition to the fine mist of oil vapor, not direct amounts of flowing oil, there is often a fair amount of moisture/condensation, unburnt fuel and other caustic chemicals from the combustion process which slip past the rings and that gets vented. If your OCC can't properly catch these liquefied contents from the CCV, then they not only contribute to the carbon buildup but also end up diluting the fresh combustion process which lowers the octane of your fuel. Reason why the OCC needs a filter to catch and separate these things before they leave the catch can headed back through your throttle body and onto your intake valves. One example is a bronze 5 micron filter. A baffle which needs to be just one or baffles in some cases were not intended to capture the CCV blowby but to contain what's caught by the porous micron filter and diverter plate. the baffle's job is really just to keep the collected content towards the bottom of the container.

    You can say whatever you want to say but if you take a picture and copy it 50X, the last one will not look as great but will be pretty similar. And to me, that's good enough. Not worry $150 more.

    I got the $30 one from Amazon that looks like yours. After 500 miles I was expecting to see 6-8 ounces of oil in the container. Instead, there was about 4 tablespoons of muddy condensate. Very disappointed. I didn't want to spend $100+ on a catch can, but it looks like I will need to do that to get a good one. I expected there to be more in the can.

    Um down pipes was your example? 🧐 pipes are the best way to save money IMO all the other big companies already did the RnD and that way the rip off company’s can make them cheaply and pass the savings on to you... it’s literally just a pipe (well 2 in my case) I’ve been buyin eBay down pipes for the past 15 years and 5 cars with not one issue 🤷🏻‍♂️ ... now an intercooler 😬 I would say no unless you can pressure test and flow test the core yada yada but I guess if you’re not mechanically inclined and don’t have the means to remedy any defect you may get from an eBay part then yeah stay away but otherwise there’s LOTS of money to be saved at no mechanical risk to your vehicle

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  3 роки тому +1

      Generally I agree-pipe is pipe. However eBay downpipes for the 335i have pretty widely documented fitment issues. And if they fit, they are known to crack at the flange.

    • @skizzlemane1
      @skizzlemane1 3 роки тому +1

      @@SpeedCultureStudios have you had this experience? So, like I said in the original post if you are mechanically inclined and know how to install things you’d be fine. I assure you that these claims of fitment are probably from people that have never been under a car til that very moment. Also again like I said in the original post, the part about intercoolers as a hypothetical, i myself would have no problem looking at parts like these because 95% of them do what they say and the 5% that have quality check issues are easily remedied if you’re handy... don’t even really need to be handy just a little elbow grease and common sense 🤷🏻‍♂️👍🏼

    • @SpeedCultureStudios
      @SpeedCultureStudios  3 роки тому

      @@skizzlemane1 That's quite possible. I did not have the car long enough to install downpipes, but I have had experience with other ebay parts over the years being less than "perfect" in how they fit. I can generally make things work--I have the tools/ability to modify or repair things on my own--but many of my subscribers are either just getting into modifying their cars or they are not all that handy and look to these videos to see if they can tackle certain projects on their own. For that reason, based on the dozens of people that have said 335i ebay downpipes have fitment issues, my advice would be to strongly consider alternative options that really aren't all that much more expensive.
      As for intercoolers, if you were just making moderate boost and not running track days or back to back 1/4 mile passes, an ebay intercooler might suffice. However, if you really have boost cranked up and push the car hard on a regular basis, a quality intercooler is important. It's not necessarily "quality" in terms of things you might have to repair out of the box--its fin density and heat dissipation capabilities that are important. The cheap ebay intercoolers are often far inferior for those making high hp numbers and lots of boost. They just cannot keep up with the additional heat being generated.
