I love JW, I'll never forget the '03 WC squad and every game he, Jonno, Dayglo, Back, Balsh (The Gas) et al contributed towards a successful and inspirational dynasty. But as great a player as JW was, as great a spokesperson for the morals and ideologies he championed as drivers for his own accomplishments, you could spend from now until the end of time asking him what made him great, what drove him and what he would pass onto the next JW...and all you'd get is sanscript metaphysical piggledewink. I mean no disrespect to JW. Only its taken 2 decades for him to comprehend his own thought-action-consequence process, to subjectively sit back and analyse what made him as good as he was, and hypothetically ask him, "What advice would you give your younger self". And still, the same as asking him in this video, "Would you take the most accomplished player on paper and pen Joe Simmons in Premiership as one of your Lions Flyhalves...? Borderline Scientology-esque rambling bollocks. A crying shame from one of the top 2 10s of all time...

There's no need to be so harsh but as an Irishman Sexton is not pickable, he is at the stage or even 10months ago of passing the shirt on and helping younger/inexperienced player to come in for Ireland.
I believe lions squad are picked on a number of reasons experience, good form, hungry players, technically good and warhorses but also it's based on how the coach wants the team to play so it might not be players we believe should be there.
Having said all that Sexton would be a great driving force behind 1 and possibly 2 no.10's during the tour. He is so driven to win and technically good which might rub of on other players. Contradiction , yes! it's always done to personal opinion. Lol

Re the Lions 10 he is absolutely right that you need to decide your game plan before selecting players to execute plan. always came across as a great guy and an all time great on the pitch but in the context of analysis he just sits on the fence unwilling to offend anyone. which is fine but would love to actually see him select and commit to a lions 10 and not just call them all out. still, loads respect to him.

Against South Africa you probably want a Sexton/Farrell/Biggar-type fly half as opposed to a Russell/Ford-type one, although in 1997 we won with Townsend and Guscott in the midfield, who were geniuses. The problem is that the current form of Sexton and Farrell stinks.

I think you're right. Gatland doesn't want flair and creative attacking. He wants precision and processes in attack and defence. He knows who he can get that from.
I don't think he'll be overly concerned with form. He knows what he can get out of certain players for 3 tests when the pressure is on.
I wouldn't be surprised if he took Simmonds into a training camp to see him for himself.

@@rob.1 Possibly why his Waikato team failed to win a match this year. Gatland's time is past - the game favours attacking rugby; and thus far he seems incapable of changing. If he doesn't pick Russell, the Lions will face the same fate as England in the World Cup Final - Farrell losing his head and losing by 20.

Could Mr Wilkinson perhaps teach Mr Farrell how to tackle using his arms and not his shoulder , and what a constitutes a late tackle. You never ever saw Jonny trying to take peoples heads off and having petulant little temper tantrums on the field , perhaps that is to big a ask from the great man.

as an english supporter, its Bigger at 10 atm. Not as 'playmaking' as finn or ford, doesn't have the leadership credentials of Faz and Sexton, but lets be honest, even if his baseline is lower then the rest of them, he is and has been consistant for years now, Finn and sexton are a roll of the dice every game, Faz and ford haven't been playing well for well over a year now. It's got to be him as things stand

Personally I think #10 is a problem position for the lions and not because its an embarrasment of riches. Sexton has a few too many miles on the clock and his aggressive defence leaves him vulnerable to injury, Biggar has big game management but he does not get the line going and Finn Russel is maybe a bit too attacking and can be a liability. On the assumption that the #10 will also be the main goal kicker and points are gonna be hard to come by I would go for Farrell (would not play him at center) and then if the game opens up or the lions need to chase the game then bring on Russel. A leftfield pick could be callum sheedy after his cameo versus england.
