The tricky situation Twisters is in is a little like the original Cars movie. It was a very American centric film with NASCAR and route 66, so the box office returns were quite domestic heavy. They tried to increase international appeal in the sequel by making it a globetrotting adventure, but that resulted in them losing the soul of the first one. Twisters is sort of in that same place where what makes it appeal in the heartland of the United States is also what hurts it internationally.
I think the first Twister movie did so well worldwide (2nd biggest movie of 1996 after Independence Day) as there was not as many big budget spectale movies back the It did feel more like an must see event to see across the world. Many of the olther big movies of that year were more comedies (Jerry Mcguire) or conventional action flicks like Mission Impossible or the Rock. Like Jurassic Parc, Titanic and Indepence Day, it was also one of the ealrly big movies that was using more CGI . seeing both ID4 and Twister in the theatre back then as a kid, I was blown away for sure!
I don’t know why this is considered a bad thing. Not all movies should be made to appeal to literally everyone on the planet. It’s good to have succesful movies that are targetted to more specific demos, it means more variance in Hollywood storytelling.
Twisters has some international reach - Nascar anything, like American Football, has very limited reach outside America. The latter two categories won't see any strong international returns; the former could see mediocre support from standard disaster/spectacle junkies.
Hurray for another week of charts with Dan!! We appreciate all the work you put into this, especially when you already have so much on your plate! Sending hugs your way!
lol that's pretty funny that Lionsgate recognizing how bad Borderlands was and not giving it a major advertising budget was what saved it from being as big of a box office bomb as some of 2023's worst like the Flash and Indiana Jones 5.
I'd imagine the profit participations for Deadpool & Wolverine are huge, with Reynolds & Jackman (and to a lesser degree, Levy) getting very healthy backend shares
One reason for Twisters failure at the international box office probably has to do with tornadoes not being anywhere near as common in other countries. The majority of global tornadoes every year occur in the US. So people just have less interest in a movie based on them.
and when people bring up the first movie as precedence, 1. not many movies have had tornado effects front and center and 2. which leads to more interest as its a "first time seeing tornadoes in the big screen because I haven't even experienced it" situation, and now there has been a good amount of movies that have these effects and we are more used to them, making it less attractive
Kind of disagree. I live in the Midwest where tornadoes are about the only disasters annually. But I’m quite interested in hurricanes and earthquakes and giant monster attacks- all things I’m not likely to ever experience personally
Yeah this seems to be big reason, and as @marcochen9117 points out tornadoes in movies have been done. I don't recall where but I remember reading a comment from a European about how they weren't interested in seeing Twisters as they've already seen Twister and the tornado effects didn't seem much better, and that the story didn't seem to interesting.
Another Dan hour? HELL YEAH! And definitely take care of yourself. Always. Might be a business unpleasant moment, but it's worth it in the long run for yourself AND from a business perspective.
The more special reason to celebrate Inside Out 2's beating out Lion King in box office, is that the "soulless" remake of the original and best Lion King, is no longer considered on any level to be the highest box office animated/CGI movie. If it weren't for that figure, which I attribute to the new technology of "life-like CGI" rather than imagination or story, (like the fascination with original Avatar in 3D) so many other Disney remakes may not have been made, that skipped out on writing and creativity, by spitting out these as well. (Some were good though, like Beauty and Aladdin)
So glad this series is back and that you're doing alright Dan, i look forward to it every week! One small note, on long legs profitability for the summer you listed the cost as $15 million at the top of the screen and then made it $25 million on the bottom, not sure if that was intentional or not. I love the longer episode and super excited to see the numbers for this upcoming weekend!
Keep your head up Dan! A near $3bn 1-2 Punch from Disney with Inside Out 2 and D&W is just insane! Does a near $1.3bn D&W make an R-rated Blade (if it ever happens) more likely?! 25:23; Does seem a little crazy that a movie can gross near $1.7bn & not clear $500m in its theatrical profit!

Welcome back. Honestly I am surprised that Borderlands managed to stay in wide release after the second week... I was thinking it would drop down under 1,000
It would be really interesting to do a chart at the end of the year that compares how many profitable movies in the last year were original ideas, vs movies based on a pre-existing material. Even if it is a high estimate the marketing was aggressive and at the lowest would be $50M. Multiple trailers, multiple ads running throughput the summer, ad tie-ins with sporting events, they flew the cast around the world to several conventions, multiple viral marketing stunts involving Alien props and actors at events and public places, several hundred facehugger props were given out at cons and screenings. They were spending heavy on this.
