Great video! Would love to see you compare it to the open up. I’m looking at both options and leaning toward the open due to price but would love to hear why you moved from the open to the echo and whether you would recommend the echo over the open?
As always, an amazing video. I appreciate you going into the issues you had while building, whether major or minor, and even if it's something you just had a brain lapse on. I think I've forgotten something important on every little bit of work I do on my bikes so I really relate, and the attitude you bring to it is really inspiring. Bike looks gorgeous, happy riding!
You really know how to build premium (looking) bikes! As for the bare front derailleur space - you could have a custom cover 3D printed. (If you have a friend with a printer and CAD knowledge) ;--)
Love all the cock-up admissions…… can totally relate……. Excelllent build vid, nd thanks confirming that the flat tops of the enve bars annoyed you because I have the same concern.👍
My rear Terra Speed was gone in about 800 km, I mean completely gone. And the carcass started failing as well, had dozens of micro punctures that did not seal.
STOP! Just stop building siiiick bikes. I can’t take it! I saw Colin Strickland’s Echo at Unbound Gravel this year and it’s been on my mind ever since. Gorgeous bike, sir!
My new road frame is due in soon, a Strael 3.0 in the Deep Grey colour, no weight weenies here :-) So I watched this beautiful video once again both for pleasure and to get ready for the build :-) Great video RoJ! Thank you for sharing all the build's 'lessons identified' and for your other top tips too. Peace
Right off the bat, I love the trick with the plastic cover for the BB tool and cup to avoid marring the cup, seems almost impossible not too. I'll be using that trick from now on. Thanks for the share on that ;) .
Curious what tire pressure you use? With a bike that nice, I'd be paranoid attempting single track or really any off road that is too gnarly! Amazing build btw 😄
@@ridesofjapan I’m really surprised that the one thing that could make a much larger difference in speed than a 35g difference in pedal mass, you casually answer like it’s not even worth talking about. Most every bike would best run with different pressures front and rear and the most ideal pressure is determined by total weight, tire width, and road surface. Check out the Silca tire pressure calculator. You would be surprised… either you’re hiding your pressure from us (which I doubt with the honesty you have with everything you do) or you haven’t yet determined the best pressure for front and rear.
Haha, I’m not hiding anything. I’ve run everything from 30 to 50psi depending what I expected the road to be. (50psi was way to much though) If I was optimizing for some kind of race than maybe I would care, but I can’t feel the difference between a few psi in either direction, if you do that’s awesome! Do what makes the time on the bike more enjoyable 👍 (To be totally honest though, I really don’t think tire pressure is worth talking about 😂)
Another 5* video as per usual. Keep it up! I have the ES600 pedals, they are designed for touring, ie they’re road pedals where you clip in once per 2-3 hours, and not for gravel. That said I like to ride in MTB shoes on the road over the winter and so they are perfect for that purpose.
Love following your builds. You've given me the weight weenie bug. I'm considering some Farsports Feder wheels with 240 EXP's for my allroad rig to allow me to drop some significant grams. Just wondering how you're getting on with them? Have you found any limitations when venturing off road?
Very nice build! As someone who enjoys building bikes, I always appreciate your attention to detail. Bummer about the animal running out in front of you! I would have been shattered over that 😩.
9:12 Don’t use electrician’s tape because its glue could eventually disintegrate and smear. Prefer ‘strapping tape’, like some leftover tubeless rim-tape.
l wish l had your money to spend bikes :P BUT l like that you do your own work on them and you use them fully !! l m glad you make these great videos on all of it leaving nothing out which is awesome because l m bike nerd too :) HOWEVER l don t think l have the patience to work on hydro disc brakes like you do NOR routing cables through everything :P KUDOS to you on that !!
You bastard 😉 I'm configuring a custom frame with external cable routing and you show this glorious example of internal routing. It looks insanely clean. Just wanted to let you know I now have a mixed love/hate relationship with this video.
Good ‘real life‘ video. Lovely bike. Having to re hose the front brake and getting taken out on maiden trip very much true to life! Reckon you have a bike for both road and off road. Although as you said- would probably use the Road Bike for Road! Very much about searching for the ‘perfect ride’,which is in my opinion ongoing. Funnily enough my most excellent days spent on both MTB’s and Road Bikes was back many years when bike tech was very low tech compared to today’s Tech!! As once said by one of the best ever Grand Tour Riders.....It Ain’t About The Bike. However that shouldn’t stop us constantly searching for perfection.
Great, entertaining and educating content as always! Your videos are a true UA-cam Highlight. So, beside of the thrill of something new, is there something the factor does better than the Open? You mentioned the descending is closer to the Emonda? Does it mean it’s racier/snappier? Sounds a bit surprising since I thought the Up was pretty racy for a gravel bike.
Yes, better descender, feels more like a pure race bike in that regard. still not as good as my Emonda but better (for me) than the Open. I'm guessing it's down to that .5 steeper head angle, but I'm no geometry expert. That's just a bonus though. But the Integrated front end is a huge for me, if it didn't have that, I would not have bought the Echo (Not Factor ;)).
Amazing video as usual! Nice ending: “until 9200, peace” 😂 Good luck sourcing it! Might be easier in Japan, but I bet it still won’t be easy. Everything Shimano is sold out in Canada. I can’t even get the finned resin pads for my bike 🥲
Look mate, your bike is superb, looks perfect and it is,the whole setup seemed to be perfect, just need to find a no perfect point ,not a weakness but something is not to match perfect...to make it realistic perfect. Good rides 👌
Hi all. What’s your experience with those “hybrid” bikes (road bike but with enough tyre clearance that you can use as light gravel)? Jack of all trades or master of one? I’m thinking about getting an endurance bike with wide clearance for when I want to include some light gravel but not sure if that’s the best approach (I’m planning on doing 90% road / 10% dirt roads). Thanks
Unfortunately, my Allied Allroad is best when parked. Looks pretty, but when you start riding, it gets attention for the wrong reason. Creak, creak, creak. Hope you have better luck.
Great Video! Soo polished! Sundays with ROJ, my favorite. Being your own wrench is a growth experience. Learning to appreciate all the details is well worth the occasional mistake, IMO. I picked up those same pedals this year, eBay special, couldn’t resist. I have the same critique, but I found the small increase in platform size to be worth the trade off. I use normal double sided shimano MTB pedals on one bike and on another, I use the ES600. Yes, clipping in the double sided pedals is very easy, you just do without even thinking about it. But the connection to the pedals is way better with the ES600s. Maybe not against the XTR version, but I doubt it, because the ES600 got this little pedal "body" which increases contact area to your shoe by a lot. But the paint on the ES600, really bad, it won't last a few rides.
Great video and useful tips, again. I work in the film industry on high-end software tools, have to say great editing all round. It’s so refreshing to see honest build videos, every other video I’ve looked at just has music playing over a perfect build, little or no grease, loads of spacers under the stem etc.
Amazing bike! What size of front roller bag do you use? s or M Can you recomend me any gravel 30c 32c tires for my roaddie bike? Not many options...thanks a lot
Great handlebar - I have enjoyed using one this past season, but yeah, you can't clamp a damned thing to it. Very pretty Allied (it looks like it changes from a deep candy apple to a blood red depending on light) Enjoyable video as usual. Cheers!
Is it worth it a Chris King headset? As Hambini said, if you turn your handlebar more than, let's say, 45º degrees you are in trouble. So what's the point of a super expensive headset?
Gorgeous build! And for those who don't work on their own bikes, please don't expect the mechanic not to curse you for them just a bit lol For the hose tool, you could get a nice clean perfectly flat cut. Place the uncut hose in the clamp first and then slide the cutter over top into the groove and then cut. Then you can insert the barb all without removing it from the clamp and you know it's perfectly perpendicular to the tool and the press surface of the barb "anvil"
I did not understand, why you use this frame. But I like the U.P. frame in blue. Red/metallic is not my color. And I do not like the diamond design of the frame.

What a Sunday: epic Fernwee this morning then an RoJ bike build this afternoon. Nice.
I wonder if you like that Shimano Brake Hose Tool?
Absolutely detest the thing! 😏
They couldn’t provide black screws for the stem top cap?? Those silver screws stand out so much on such a clean build.
Paint costs weight
Yeah...I would swap those out for black anodized titanium bolts!
I don't understand how you don't get free frames and gear considering the quality of your videos. Someone send this man more stuff !!
Getting free stuff sometimes imply in losing free of speech….!
You can significantly reduce the rotational friction on the es 600 pedals by adjusting the nuts on the spindle.
ROJ Are your XTR pedals different spindle length or I have eaten too many bananas today?
Your eye are probably tricked by the strip of black tape on one of the spindles (that’s there to keep the seal from sliding out)
