- Having vision is such a wonderful ability that greatly helps us, especially when using a computer... But... How could you use a computer without being able to see? Well, in this episode, Diana tries out Windows 10 Blindfolded with a program known as "NVDA" that helps blind people around the world access computers.
If you want like to download NVDA visit the official website:
www.nvaccess.org/
Next time on OSFirstTimer, we return to the 90's yet again to explore old software. What will it be? Photoshop 1.0? Some other program? Stick around to find out! - Розваги
I told you OSFirstTimer was going to be weekly or fortnightly from now on ;) If things seem a little weird editing wise in this video it's due to poor performance in Sony Vegas due to adding the keyboard in as another layer filmed via my iphone (Sony Vegas 12 seems to hate iPhone formats and rendered formats) so it lagged like crazy for me and took 2 full days to edit :(
Stick around till the end of the video to see us playing around with the funny voices though and remember to come back in early June for another video!
good video
Vegas only acted weird when I tried to import iPhone footage without Apple's Quicktime installed on my PC. I swapped over to Adobe Premiere and while it doesn't get on any better with iPhone formats it just takes a simple conversion to mp4 for me.
I actually did attempt to convert over to mp4 but vegas also hates rendered formats and lags even more :(
Do you not use Vegas 13 again?
The boy I was tutoring uses Vegas pro 13, however, I still use Vegas Pro 12 as I don't see a need to upgrade.
5:52 There can't be a worse video to get a typo like _that_ in :P
Victor Tran bit like when Jasmine tiped sex
:)
:) ;) :) :) ;)
TFB64 I remember that
TFB64 but it's not a typo
Totally blind NVDA user here, great video guys!
Both respectful and insightful, plus you really tried rather than just demoing it.
The mother son team is pretty cool too... No way I can get my mom interested in this kind of thing, but hey that's okay. LOL
And messing with voices is hella fun, I didn't even know the whisper could sound so creepy with other languages, and Espeak (the particular synthesizer you were using) is only one of many, some sound very lifelike!
Also, anxious Andy sounds much more anxious if the inflection is set to the default, you guys had it set to 0 which is why it was robotic, though that's fun too... :P
I can tell you did your research, though I will mention a handful of things just so that you know in the future.
First: Their are actually add-ons like "golden cursor" and options like mouse tracking and announce coordinates that can help you use the mouse more effectively, but in general we would get the same info by using the review cursor instead "capslock plus shift plus up down left right" on a laptop keyboard. The manual is pretty confusing so I didn't even get that for months after switching from JAWS.
Voiceover for Mac also does a pretty great job of navigating visually rather than using a customized interface, which is why it's so great for blind web and App devs, so using the mouse their is allot more doable.
Second: JAWS "job access with Speech" is actually more useful in school and work environments than NVDA in almost all cases, it has allot of customization options out of the box, but it also has more comprehensive training materials, more complete web support, more compatibility with Microsoft Office products and other industry leading software suites in many fields (particularly when it comes to responding to major UI updates) better math support, and is sometimes more successful at dealing with "partially accessible" programs.
However it's also prohibitively expensive for someone on disability pay, so schools and businesses are the ones who would be buying it in the first place.
Third: Any blind person without a stick up their ass or who has not gone blind recently in a traumatic way will not mind you saying things related to sight "did you watch that last night" "did you see Amy at the store yesterday?" ETC, I promise you, and down to Earth blind people will jump on them for it if their mean about it.
Same goes for making mistakes "can you pass me that box over their" "did you see that cool car!" "waves and says hello without also saying their name" like yeah it can be annoying especially if it keeps on happening, but any reasonable person would be understanding, and it's not on you to police your self and walk on eggshells around them.
Your also not going directly to hell without collecting 200$ for accidentally getting in my way I promise, only for texting in the middle of the sidewalk and bitching when I run into you, so no need to apologize 342 times, it's okay it happens to me multiple times every day so I'm used to it by now, as long as you don't scream at your best friend for doing it, then I'll probably tell you off for
foisting your anxiety onto others that don't deserve it. :@
Fourth and last: We can actually play games at least to a degree, mostly fighting games and some rhythm games or side scrolling beatemups, though not to the same level and with some restrictions. Mortal Kombat, Killer instinct, Streetfighter, Injustice, Shank, and Space Channel 5 are common ones.
We also have an entire selection of games specifically for the blind called "audio games" almost exclusively for the PC and some for the smartphone, though they are generally several years behind the mainstream even if we've been getting more advanced titles in the last 5 years or so, in fact that's how I found out about this awesome video, from the off topic room at "audiogames.net". :-)
By the way if your wondering how I'm using smilys, their is an add-on for NVDA called "emoticons". :D Though you can also memorize most of them, it can't do animated or picture only emogys though... :-(
Anyone that wants to, please feel free to reply to this comment and ask any questions you want of me.
I've always found mother son teams to be pretty cool since January 3, 2021
Cool a blind user
@@romanescu76 Hey there. :)
hi, can you see me?
Good day. I am a blind computer user. I take Information technology as a subject in school. In Information technology, they teach you to write programs in the Delphi programming language. I have a MacBook pro with Mac OS High Sierra. I use the Voiceover screenreader, because it is build into the OS and there for it is free and very easy for me to use. Because Delphi does not work on Mac OS, I run Windows Ten in a virtual machine with the NVDA screenreader. I use my laptop's build in keyboard and I no ware every key is located. As for navigating around the OS, I use the keyboard and screenreader specific hot keys. By the way, you can quickly check the time with NVDA in Windows by pressing Insert + F12. If you hold Insert and press F12 2 times, it will tell you the date. You can change the voice of your screenreader to the one that sounds write for you. You can even change the intonation, peach and speed of the voices.
Alex Playzz I listen to the video, but I can sea a little, but it's nothing to wright home about. I just know where the keys on my keyboard is. The f12 key is the 13th key from the left in the top row of a keyboard. I am writing this comment on my Ipad with Voiceover on. I hope that answers the question.
I wish that your eyes function again
"Network RAT", "Phone Listener", "Internet Injector" and "Hardware Trasher".
Nice easter-egg.
You guys are amazing lol! I'm a blind computer user myself. And to shut down the computer on Windows 10, a blind person would press "Windows logo key plus X," and up arrow until you hear "Shut down," and you'd press right arrow once, and up arrow until you hear the word that you want to hear, which is "Shut down," for the last time, and finally, pressing enter will turn off the computer. Alternatively, press the "Windows logo key plus X," again, but this time, after you press "Windows logo key plus X" you'd press letter "U" twice. This will turn off the computer also. :)
The last part is the best 😂😂😂😂
Yep, everyone be sure to stick around to the 20 minute mark, we try out the different voices and it gets super funny :)
I would set this creepy thing on the blind person computer :P. Am I a bad person?
No you're not.
I actually use a whisper voice at night so as not to disturb my mom while she sleeps.
Another friend of mine, (Jake Gross), did a modded ESpeak synth add-on for NVDA called SpeechPlayerInESpeak.
This add-on's a full ESpeak, but with many things fixed; -- and other curious things tossed in for good measure.
If you'd like to have a look at my friend's site (which honestly looks more like an HTML-ized FTP site), go to
HTTP://WWW.GrossGang.Com/
Most of you won't be traveling there just because you can see and the utilities/other features there are meant more of us people that, well, live in the dark, lol?
@@hunterklowss ^^^^^^^^^>
You can turn off the PC by doing Alt+F4 when nothing is open, but you can also do it from the start menu when the hamburger menu is selected (the menu with the couple of lines) and then using the arrow keys you can navigate down to the shutdown button. 😀
Hey YooHoo; Here's one;
While on the desktop or inside of a program when you're totally done with everything:
Do a Windows key+X for the secret/advanced menu, tap a U to "shut down or Sign Out", (Note the sub-menu drop-down,) then the letter of the underlined task;
(H to hibernate, s to sleep, etc.)
Glad you're uploading regularly again. :)
I use this software on a daily basis due to me being almost completely blind. I do find that voiceover on the mac is better, but its a matter of opinion of course. I also use orca on linux (you actually opened this by mistake all the way back in fhedora 18) and although its not as fully featured as NVDA, it puts up a good fight. Any opensource python programmers should really help them out if you've got time, as well as NVDA, which is written in python as well.
You don't see anything or you can see some colors or something? If that's the case, I'm imaginating that it would be hard to use a computer without seeing anything on the screen.
I have a bunch of different blindness conditions, but all you need to know is that bright light distorts my vission and hurts my eyes and that if you put masking tape over a pair of glasses and then put them on, that's about the level I can see. But it doesn't phase me in any way, not in this modern, computer accessible world. I even make my own UA-cam videos on the channel I'm posting as, using iMovie on mac (pretty much the only accessible video editer). And yes, the quality of my videos is not top notch quite yet, but that's only because I've only just got my intro sorted and things like that, so I haven't made a video with it in yet.
Not being able to see a screen very well doesn't hurt me at all thanks to the people at Apple who make voiceover, the kind volunteers and developers at NVDA and orca and my own intuition. For example, although I can bearly see, Keynote on the mac enabled me to see enough that, with a black background and a 32in tv, I could create my intro.
Trust me, being blind is awesome, I wouldn't give it up for the world.
Orca does have some room to improve; But NVDA on the Windows side is tearing Jaws's teeth out without anaesthesia!
TheFake VIP I am also blind but Ii use windows and android
It's going to feel like a bit to get used to at first, but once you do, you'll be more than off to the races in short order.
Yay! You guys are now uploading more! I knew someday this would happen. :D
Coolperson2323 your profile pic 😂🤦🏼♂️
Lol.
I am going to love watching this video. It sounds awesome. I love watching your videos. And Diana sounds like a awesome mum.
To be honest, I feel a lot of the videos we have done in the past are funnier and more entertaining than this video, but, this video teaches an important lesson on just how privileged we are to be able to see while using the computer, so all in all, it's an important video.
I’m before Victor Tran!! Glad you’re back I enjoy your videos a lot.
I’m before 1000 views and 100 likes which is a goal for me on a osfirsttimer video.
I’m actually pretty lucky sense UA-cam is broken and doesn’t give me notifications to you. Does for others but not you.
This was sooo funny😂😂 Awesome video!
Yes I have been waiting for this one for so long! :D
Yay! I love the videos with your mom a lot :)
9:28 why is there a folder called court evidence? *Im Concerned*
As a low vision guy, your video is quite informative, because you are showing how hard is to use a computer as a blind person. Notice that blind people often use keyboard shortkeys because it makes things easier, blind people have to pass throw a high learning curve to be able to work around even with the most simple tasks. This video is positive as a blind experience. Great video!
Wow, the first whisper voice was genuine scary... That was good xD
I went to pre school with the developer of NVDA, I'm vision impaired myself, I mostly use screen magnification, but I have briefly played with NVDA. I have also used JAWS, my friends use JAWS.
This is a good video good job guys this coming from a visually impaired person
Thanks for commenting. I've always found it fascinating what blind and visually impaired people think of my videos as the exploration of operating systems seems like something very hard to visualize without being able to see fine details well, or, in extreme cases, not being able to see the screen at all.
You read dialogs and message boxes allot of the time, and you often comment on backgrounds and icons, you may not be trying to do it, but your videos are already quite easy to follow for a blind person.
That is correct, I also especially like when Diana tries to create a piece of music.
yeah. I love watching your videos man. even though I can't see them, I can still listen to them, and as the others said, your discriptions are very hard to follow
In tab navigation, if you miss an element hold down the Shift key while pressing tab to focus and navigate backwards.
You keep a budget but your vids are still AMAZING
17:21 You got crickets back, again, she can't see.
Thanks Phil
6:09 Put a few seconds past this on a laughing montage lol
I love your Videos !
I just saw the title of this video, and am so excited. As a blind person who uses NPDA regularly, this is going to be exciting! I am also very into things like coding, VMs, and many things covered on this chanel. I am into computers all the way. Being blind doesn't stop me from doing what I love. Edit, I like NVDA much much better then JAWS, and a lot of my friends who are also blind agree.
That's really great to hear that you are enjoying these videos. I don't know much about the world of being blind but a helpful blind person helped me set up this episode.
I hope more frequent videos happen!
It a really funny, I was just watching the video you put out 5 days ago.... lol
SO many videos!
Greetings from South Africa! I was very surprised when you brought up our accent!
SouthAfrican Nerd Hugo!!! Bel die poliessie!!!
im pretty sure you can press alt+f4 on the desktop and a shutdown dialog will appear
Wow!!! I really enjoyed listening to your videos. I use nonvisual desktop access. I am totally blind. I also use the Macintosh with voiceover. I also use iOS with voiceover as well.
Yaaaaaa this took so long to come out
Lol, the wispers!
(pretty sure you know about [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Del]
then [Tab] over to power options to shutdown 😎👌
Alt+f4 when mo apps are oepen
oh my God! Out of all videos I find right now! This one I am a blind computer user and I watch all of those videos even the older ones because I'm bored
Holy shit Phill, I didn’t expect that.
Finally you uploaded, yes I'm 1 week late because I was busy
Yes, new OSFT Video Horray :)
Windows has built in voice commands which works pretty well and is pretty integrated with standard Windows functions
What's the guitar song in the intro
I was already worrying if you were okay or not in Tasmania, but seems like you get along :D
Wow you should have 100k already
OMG OSFIRSTTIMER IS BACK
Yaaaaa A other up load!
Keep it up os
What screen recorder you use
LOL Diana knows how I feel. Because I’m blind❤😂😂😂😂
Hey I have a question on my Laptop I have a file called debug.log and I didnt make it! Do you know what it is?
Seems like an automatic log file that got created when a program crashed. If you look at the path you should be able to easily discern which program made it. Should be safe to delete, though most programs have a place you can upload those files either automatically, in the program itself, or via a web page.
you should do more screen reader videos. How about the mac or IOS devices with voiceover next?
Your backkk
i am a fan of os first timer
NEW VIDEO AAAAAAAA YESSSS!!!!!
I know it's out of topic for this particular video, but if you know how to update an Archlinux that has been missing on months of updates i want that. Unless it involves formatting as it is my current conclusion. ;)
K. : i often use use yaourt -Syyauu --noconfirm as a have a lot of AUR packages, but even regular ones fail. Basically there's so much to update some updates will break other dependances.
I will still get a look at those notes though. I will share if i find something useful. ;)
Yes new video :) what happened to that video about singing you were taking about ages ago? 😂
The "If OSFirstTimer was...." series idea has been put away in the recycle bin for now and retro software exploration will become somewhat of a main focus.
OSFirstTimer oh ok thanks for replying :)
I love ur vids
I hope vids will stay 20 mins so it not like a movie😊 not that I don’t like long ones once every time
😈Are you awake. I can see you, I am watching you, always watching. You can't run...😈
thats nice
Couldn't you use the built in text to speech for the video?
Fyi when a screen reader says edit it means you can type there
Not like most sighties will care about that.
Oh wait, duh, the mouse pointer changes its shape to denote a task.
Try voiceover on iOS
Well, thing is ... yes. It would be a good idea but being this was a one time concept, I don't think they'll be doing this again. It would be good to experience that on mobile, though.
I think using voiceover on mobile is easier than on computers because you actually know which part of your screen you are controlling. For example you’d know when you are at the top of your screen on a touchscreen phone but not on a pc with mouse and keyboard.
But too, VO has special gestures. You're speaking to a visually impaired user right now. I have an iPhone and when you use voiceover you either (A) have to tap twice quickly or the easier method when you know about it (B) use flick-and-swipe gestures.
why is the patreon closed?
You can do alt+f4 on the desktop to turn off the computer.
Using Windows 10 Blindfolded and "Deaf"
Or even funnier, using Windows 10 without a keyboard
This video was funny though, loved it
Diana could just get a on screen keyboard.......
Also blind people use alt f4 with nothing open that brings up a list witch includes shutdown computer
Oh, that's a good idea! Thanks for the comment :)
That's how I shutdown my computer and I'm not even blind.
OSFirstTimer Actually Diana did this in the “Mum Tries Out Windows 10 Without A Mouse” video.
Look at 18:57. 😂
witch
Actually, you can still do that but with the Desktop in the foreground. I am a blind individual who uses a range of operating systems for gaming, entertainment and media and work..
I also recommend ZoomText for a follow up video.
Makers of voice things put Diana's voice in it
And the 'fu' part is funny
On my laptop, the F4 key closes the current window your in. My laptop is a Lenovo G51, so maybe a blind person that uses the Lenovo G51 might use F4 to close a window. by the way, you don't need to hold alt!
Oh, that's action keys.
An earlier Toshiba and this HP here both have it on by default from the box when you buy it.
I just needed a small piece of sighted help to get into my BIOS, locate the Action Keys selection and finally toggle that off.
Upon saving and a restart, now I hold down the FN key to do an HP exclusive feature.
I.E., FN+F11/F10/F9 for Volume Mute, Volume Up and volume Down.
I was born premature in the year of 2001 and I was legally blind until 2010. Back in the day I used a program called zoomtext in order to use a computer
Sweet.
Like it!
You can also use windows narrotor
Currently editting a video response to this,, expanding, for those who are interested, on what being blind and using a computer is like.
Edit 2: I had to edit this again because I uploaded the wrong, uneditted version. But anyway ... here it is:
ua-cam.com/video/YLDCxc0s3vs/v-deo.html
Im croatian and i laughed at the croatian whisper
Cool vid
In addition to different voices, there are also different synthesizers. You could set it to the default Microsoft David if you wanted to.
Windows Electronic101 What about Eloquence? You can get Eloquence for free on NVDA. Just download IBM TTS add-on. By the way, don't you think that MS Sam is a grate option to try out? 😂
@@carelroos8908 They would have so much fun with the rofl copter. LOL! Soy soy soy soy soy!
Nice
When you select the Mario voice: It’s a-me, Mario!
I use Braille everyday
Next step: Diane makes NVDA beatbox.
Hi love. It I'm blind as well and I love your vids
How did you rode this comment tho
Are you Siri
Ops I met I use Siri
Blind people use programs such as JAWS to help them read comments on the internet as well as other content on the computer. They can even chat just as fast as non-blind people in instant messenger programs because their screen reading software reads out content very quickly to them.
Lol when you were in the start menu and you wanted to turn off the pc, you were supposed to hit tab until the three arrows were selected, then click the down arrow. Great video anyways!
Lol, but it was her job to figure out where the Power icon is;
NVDA Will Not Say "Power Icon (three arrows on it)" for you.
Is this a VM
Man I was about to go to bed
same
Yea, OSFirstTimer upload times do favor Aussie viewers, sorry :P
UK.themeparks it's almost midnight here
OSFirstTimer I'm just happy for a new upload :')
OfficialR Productions 9:30 in Bulgaria lol
Windows+X would have saved Diana a lot of time.
Only he never mentioned that at all in this video, and most sighties?
Ok, click the Start button.
Click on Power.
Finally click the item you want to do; Task Done.
wait what? what kind of keyboard is this?????
*relaxing* Welcome back to OSFirstTimer, will diana be abe to complete tasks on windows 10?... *BLINDFOLDED?*
'titted notepad' LMAO
I'm From South Africa!
I’m blind❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Love it
Hey I'm new I subbed
i knew this would happen
Hello we have finished the video.
Hello sir. I am a blind person myself. My name's Dane. I challenge you to use VoiceOver on the iPhone. Give it alex, as alex's voice is quite pleasant!! Thanks for doing this, i use nvda every single day on windows, voiceOver on mac and iOS, talkback on android. .
Titted notepad😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
OMG... I THOUGHT YOU WERE JOKING IN THE OTHER EPISODE?!!?
nice
Are some of these videos pre-recorded? This looks like it's in your old house.
