Biot-Savart Law Example: Field along the Axis of a Current Loop

  • We use the Biot Savart Law to find the magnetic field at a distance x along the axis of symmetry of a loop of current-carrying wire of radius R. We show the parts of the Law of Biot and Savart, including the current element (I dL), the radial vector (r), and the differential element of magnetic field (dB). In this example, it is useful to keep only the horizontal components of the magnetic field (dBx = dB cos theta).
