Whether you’re formatting a report or setting up a manuscript, page numbers are crucial for navigation and reference. Watch as I show you how to add page numbers, customize their format, and ensure your title page doesn’t get numbered, all with a few clicks.
Steps to Add Page Numbers in Word:
1. Open Your Document:
- Start with the Word document you wish to add page numbers to.
2. Navigate to Insert Tab:
- Click on the ‘Insert’ tab at the top of the Word interface.
3. Adding Page Numbers:
- Click on the ‘Page Number’ button.
- Choose the location for the page numbers (e.g., top, bottom, margins, or current cursor position).
- For bottom page numbers, select your preferred alignment (left, center, right) and style
4. Apply and Exit:
- Once selected, Word automatically applies the page numbers across the document.
- Exit the header and footer view by clicking ‘Close Header and Footer’ or pressing the Esc key.
5. Adjust First Page Numbering:
- If your first page is a title page and you don’t want it numbered:
- Double-click any page number to access the Header and Footer tab.
- Check the ‘Different First Page’ option to remove the number from the first page.
- To adjust numbering starting from the second page as '1':
- Click 'Page Number', then 'Format Page Numbers'.
- In the dialog box, set 'Start at' to 0.
