I thought Vita was born in Knole Sevenoaks? Vita and her husband Harold brought this place after leaving Longbarn in Weald or am I wrong? This use to be a prison with French prisoners.
I met Nigel Nicholson on several occasions at Sissinghurst Castle back in the mid seventies. Remember him starting a petition to prevent a new motorway through Petworth.
Sissinghurst is quite easy to get to from where I live, so I will check it out. The tower is very impressive. 'Sapphic encounters' I like that! I didn't know she wrote about Istanbul. I looked this up and found, amongst other things, her poem "The Muezzin". I once heard the muezzins calling to prayer as I stood atop the Galata Tower. It was an eerie experience!
Look out her two travelogues "Passenger to Tehran" (1926; 2007) and "Twelve Days in Persia" (1927; 2009) for stories about her Middle Eastern travels as a diplomatic wife (as well as some of Freya Stark's contemporaneous accounts, such as "The Southern Gates of Arabia" and "The Valleys of the Assassins"). Virginia Woolf used Vita's experiences to re-imagine her lead character's Istanbul experiences, including the all-important sex change, in "Orlando" (1928).

You're correct. Vita and Harold bought the property in 1930. Vita was born at Knole.
Isn't the famous White Garden there? You should plan to revisit when it is in season!
Yes it is
That looked like a great day out!
Informative and fascinating.

She spent a few years there.
