I dont even take my regular phone in public PERIOD! It stays locked in my apartment hidden away until I leave to return back home to my country. I take a burner phone and put basic apps on it and never allow the phone to "save passwords". I buy a 3-5 year old unlocked phone on ebay and that is what I carry in Medellin. I always "expect" something will happen to it. I don't see a need to have my regular phone with me on vacation. If I want to talk to people back home, I can call them when I get back to my apartment
Man, you put some thought into that. lol. Good deal. I got backups to my backups too
@@dcbornrob I am naturally paranoid. haha
I do something similar.
What phone company do you use for the unlock phone?
@@SE-vt7fs I bought a Galaxy S7 Android about 4 years ago on ebay. I think I paid less than $100 for it. I use it over & over again when I travel. I suggest getting one with a good camera so you can take quality photos. But make sure it is an "unlocked" phone. Any phone company carrier works fine as far as SIM cards go
Lucky guy...at 25 I wasn't even dreaming of international travel. Just struggling to earn a living
Yea man, some of us have that Wonderlust; for me, travel is LIFE
I have used taxis many times in Medellin and Bogota....12 trips total....never had a problem so far
that's good.
I think it’s real good what you guys are doing I want to add to the cause I’ve been traveling to Colombia a few times and let a great taxi driver who’s a ex officer I can refer him to anyone
Thanks for watching.
Incorrect you are safer in the yellow taxi with the license plate on the side and the top. Not just any yellow taxi. The ones with the license plates are from a legit company and you can call and make a complaint if anything happens. That is bad advice
thanks for watching
@@dcbornrob thanks for replying!
I was in Colombia for 6 months never used Uber only took yellow cabs not 1 accident but I always sat in front with the driver and I pay attention. My opinion this dude got robbed because the driver seen he’s soft
Not sure if that's a good reason to get robbed. lol. So, normally he's a good taxi driver, but today he sized up a passenger and robbed him? Yea, I'll stick to Ubers.
@@dcbornrob I hear you no matter what it’s wrong but my opinion before you even get in the car they sizing you up
I took cab hundred times in medellin. Never had problems with yellow cab. Drivers are more polite than drivers in chicago. Why Uber is safer?
I think Uber is safer because you don't have to come out of your pocket with money. That and there's a record and map of your whereabouts. A way to contact the driver afterwards like I just had to do in Mexico. Numerous reasons.
I took yellow taxis for years never problems but be careful
I will too; as a last resort though.
Colombia has had problems with heinous crime, murders, sexual assaults, and kidnappings since I was a child. Americans never cared about the narcos and guerrilla groups kidnapping children. Now that Colombia has become a sex tourist paradise. Foreigners are now concerned over robberies and potentially getting drugged. The insanity is many foreigners are shocked by these events occurring in Medellin. Medellin is actually quite tamed compared to towns and cities on the coast. Bogotá is also much worse for robberies and murders. However, the majority of the victims are locals. The average foreigner can careless. If Colombia stopped catering to the interest of most male tourists. The concern for Colombia would dissipate overnight.
thanks for watching
The taxi drivers also drive crazy in Medellin and you feel like your going to get in a car wreck
Oh, there's been a couple of times, in an Uber, I knew I would die. I thought for sure, so I just chilled
If u spend long time in a Spanish speaking country, try to learn the language, at least the basic
Many English speakers think they can speak to anyone in English which is wrong
Moreover, Medellin ( like many cities ) is a
Place which attracts many locals to make money , no matter how
I’ speak Spanish and is easy for me to navigate through the city , never said to anyone where I’m staying or if I travel alone
I dress very simple and no jewelry to attract attention
Always keeping my eyes open
On the other hand, is a great picture to visit and have fun
Thanks for sharing the insight
Use cabify for taxis.
thanks for sharing
Taxi's are very sketchy in Colombia. I would suggest as a foreigner to use Uber. Uber will at least have the driver's first name and their license plate number. Stay safe out there folks. Don't let this stop you from visiting Colombia or any other foreigner country.
Yea, I'm Uber all the way. Until I need to get somewhere. lol
@@dcbornrob there is not Uber in Colombia anymore. They have indriver which is similar, but they have not control or regulations over them.
@Overseas Hotel and Apartments Isolated????? Are you out of your mind. Do you own search. Guess you never google or youtube things. Dont lie to yourself. I love medellin, but its very dangerous.
@Overseas Hotel and Apartments I get it, but for someone that does not know the language, you need to do extra “intelligence” work. I’m fluent in Spanish, but l know what time its when it comes to traveling. I almost got robbed and killed in Cali, Colombia by a young taxi driver. Once he noticed my scent, he took me far away in cali, to the south. I was near Granada, it was like a 6,000 pesos rite and he took me so far that the meter was already marking 18,000 pesos. I prayed to the Lord Jesus to get me out of this mess. So when l saw a red light, l tossed him 10,000 pesos and got out of the car in less than two seconds. Thanks God that th taxi driver stopped at the red light. Then l took an old taxi driver back to Granada thanks God.
Never had an issue with one thank god
I use cab drivers, but what I do is pick the ones I have already used. I keep their numbers stored on my phone and only use the ones I'm familiar with for the most part
good advice
Just let you know Uber is not reliable during rush hours...you are more likely to get robbed waiting for Uber than taking a taxi. it's a strong statement to say not to take any taxis. The 3-digit number on the taxi is easy to remember and track. This is a very one-off case, if anything a fake or stolen Uber can also rob you
thanks for sharing
Amazing that a Taxi driver would pull a stunt like that, I guess he is either a fake driver or he does not care about running into one of his victims in the future.
Maybe stole the taxi
Yep, one or the other. CRAZY
could have
That was no taxi driver..
There are many desperate people in Colombia... and taxi drivers are no exception
Randomly ended up in Colombia? YEAH RIGHT!
Yeah this guy is know different than any of the sex tourists invading my beautiful country
i would love to go to colombia to really immerse myself into the culture .. discover alot about the different types of food and explore the beautiful wonderful cities and nature that colombia has..
HA! who am i kidding i just want some poontang!! yes sir!! the youtubers all say you can have 25 different girlfriends there's even a youtuber that has a harem in colombia WOW!! colombia is AWESOME!!
@@commanderclaude8781 you believe everything on UA-cam.
@@jaylove7391 all the youtubers that go down to colombia have dozens of women in their videos.. its like colombia is a mysitcal magical wonderland of women .... its such a farcry from what you get in the states.. they say that colombianas love gringos so yeah i do believe them.
@@commanderclaude8781 keep believing that lol 😂 i have witnessed quite of few individuals like yourself in Medellin. They thought women were literally waiting for them at the airport. Lol These guys believed women would flock all over them. Sure, if your into prostitutes pay to play. UA-cam is entertainment and many of those UA-camrs couldn’t catch a cold. But who knows you might be a ladies man, but by your writing. No offense you will be paying for services and there is nothing wrong with it. As long as it’s between two consenting adults
I live in Medellin and take Didi, Uber and taxis all the time and so far there have been no issues with any of them. All the taxis have their license plate written on both sides of the car, so take a picture of that just in case. I wish the guy nothing but the best in the future. Thanks for bringing us this story.
Awesome. Thanks much for the look out
@@dealerslicenseops What do you mean exactly? And to above CruiseAddict: take a pic..why? your phone is getting stolen 10 min. later.
Well he stole the phone so…
I just came back. Only used a transportation company recommended by my Airbnb owner and sometimes Ubers.
Good deal. I hope you had a good time
yep
I’ve encountered a few sketchy taxi drivers throughout my travels in Colombia. I remember one driver who insisted on taking me to the airport as I was leaving Colombia that day. Once we reached the tolls, he wanted me to pay for it even though it’s the driver’s responsibility. Upon arriving at the at the airport, he tried to charge me 50 USD (18894 COP) which was nonsense as the normal rate is about 75-80000 COP. Once I called him out on it, he quickly perked up .
Yea, and it helps to speak enough Spanish to let him know you're not going for his crap
As someone who has traveled to Colombia many times, you don't take taxi's (unless you know them personally or it's your close friends brother) you take Uber
Good advice
You can't just hop in a taxi in el centro at rush hour, you have to understand the habits of the locals. Just here for a few days you cant tell sketchy possible fake taxi drivers from legit ones. and never go off the main road if you dont know your way around here
You right. Where you been Jason? I reached out a while back and didn't hear from you. I hope all is well.

have never used the yellow taxi in Medellin I always use I drive the drivers are very kind, educated and honest except one evening of December 26, 2023 late in the night I wanted to go home and I did the stupid thing of stopping a yellow taxi he looked suspicious I didn't trust him at all I saw his meter ticking very quickly when I reached my destination he wanted to charge me double I refused to pay and I told him I was going to call the police he told me he said give me 20,000 pesos instead of 40 I paid except the next day I realized that he gave me a fake bill of 20,000 I was going to have a coffee in the morning in a cafe that I frequents often when paying the girl told me that the note is fake fortunately the girl knows me because he usually calls the police and you can have big problems be careful of the fake note
Wow... thats crazy. I used to take the yellow taxis all the time when I was there and didn't have any issues. Uber is preferable but there are often long wait times, and they would frequently cancel.
Yea, at some point you'll find youself in a taxi. Just because there's nothing else and you need to get somewhere
How does it help to take a picture of taxi driver ID if they steal your phone that has the picture? 🤣
Email it. I do that with every thing. And if it's android, another phone will have it or on your pc
Taxi's in Cartagena are very much the norm. I mean I've used Uber a few times but more times than not it's a taxi. They are literally everywhere. You can't walk 10 feet without seeing a yellow taxi. To make the blanket statement that taxis are dangerous in Colombia.... meh. I've never been to Medellin proper, or Bogota proper, but Cartagena many times. Yo it is BAD BAD BAD. On hyper alert for every moto that comes near you, hyper alert walking down the street, hyper alert sitting in a restaurant, Wait, I'm sorry.... did you say you were on vacation? LOL. I don't know... next time I go to Colombia I really have to keep an eye on how much I'm enjoying it or not. I feel like all this stuff I'm watching is really putting me on edge. In Medellin it really seems like the block is hot.
LOL. It just has to be a way of life and way of thinking. After a while, you don't put much energy into it, you just KNOW how to move
Used Taxis exclusively in Cartagena and agree it’s the norm. However, huge police presence there in historic area and maybe that lessens the chance of being a victim.
@@dcbornrob I do agree on that. Like I’ve always said. The many places I’ve been in Colombia… after the first trip I totally understood it. I think it’s more like you watch too many spooky movies, then you start hearing noises in the middle of the night lol.
Sorry this happened. Thank you for sharing it.
Thanks bro. I'm glad he shared. If we help ONE, I'm good
I think this is more common than we know, but many of these incidents go unreported.
I'm sure
Great video Rob, I always use the hotel taxi, I had a good driver
Good deal. You know how to move around
sorry that happened. karma for that taxi driver asshole. may he rot!. at least your alive!
If you need to take a taxi use Cabify. It's like Uber in the sense that it has the drivers info, license plate # and fixed rate. Try to ask a portero from a Hotel or someone from a restaurant order you a cab. They usually write the license plate # for you so you know which one is yours.

The sound poor
A private taxi driver pull a dagger knife on me in one of those Latin Countries many years ago when he reach entrance of a hotel about 50m from hotel when he try charge me $25 from airport which was a $15 ride back then. I told him big man the ride is $15 and if you do not take that you would get nothing, and you not going to punk me out with no dagger knife. I open the door and walk out like a lion and he say wait wait i would take the $15. My mind tell me do not give him nothing, because of the stunt he try to pull, but my spirit decided to go back and give him the $15. That was my first time ever entering the country and that was the welcome i got. I had a similiar situatiin in Miami years ago as well where Taxi driver try to charge me $50 to go downtown when i reach. I say hold on here you not dealing with no punk
Glad you came out ok. Play it safe in these countries. Don't want to be a statistic. Glad you're safe
@@dcbornrob I know a lot of people in that Latin country. Just happen to be the first time i went there. I never went Colombia though, but i do not think i need to, because a lot of them come to my country and usually very beautiful. You have to really know how to move though. Best to sit in back of taxi and know what the price is before you step into car. Do not catch no taxi with two friends of the taxi diver in the car and know what you dealing with. I made some mistakes years ago, but I make sure i find out what the price is or find out from people who know the price range. But i normally travel with natives, so i am well protected. At the end of the day you just have to know what you are doing on the street and tell the taxi driver before hand you catch taxis everyday and know what the price is at each destination, and if he do not agree, just tell him you catch another taxi. I do not really travel to dangerous countries though.
Thanks much for the feedback
Like your suggestion about taking picture of the license plate. I would also suggest emailing that photo to yourself or a friend or uploading it to the cloud like Google drive. Also, pictures of women that men meet should be also saved in email or the cloud.

I took a cab from Botero area at night back to Poblado. Unfortunately this gentlemen missed major signs. Give your neighborhood and cross streets. That's all they need, you don't need to show your phone.

I agree, one of the first thing you need is to memorize where are you staying, next to a recognized place, etc. You never show your phone. I always carry a piece of paper with the address. I went to Hong Kong few years algo, the taxi driver only spoke Chinese, so I showed them the business card from the hotel.
