    The 2016 Reebok CrossFit Games were a grueling five-day, 15-event test to find the fittest man and woman on Earth. "Fittest on Earth: A Decade of Fitness" follows the dramatic story of the top athletes who qualified and competed and offers an inside look at what it takes to be among the world's elite athletes, both in training and on the competition floor. The CrossFit Games challenge competitors to perform intense physical tasks, but the hardest part is sometimes mental. Athletes often learn the details of the events only minutes before they begin, and everyone handles the pressure differently. Which of these fierce competitors will rise to the top and earn the title of Fittest on Earth?

    This is completely appropriate to compare with a mental illness. Mental illnesses come in all shapes and sizes. What is ironic is that the "sensitive" SJW's saying you should not compare this to a mental illness are in fact saying "hey, my mental illness or my loved one's illness is more important or more serious than yours." How selfish and undeserving of you to speak when you say one form of illness is worse than another. Everyone is unique. Rich Froning had to essentially quit individual competition because it was ruining his life. He would be traveling for work or spending much needed time with family and could not think about anything else but training. OCD, anxiety, ptsd of games events, is that not a form of mental illness?? Hell yes it is. Being an athlete at this level requires superior genetics and a level of focus and discipline comparable to OCD. So what ends up happening? Most of the successful athletes probably end up having some form of OCD, which is a mental illness. Look it up. Surgeons, Lawyers, and the most successful people in our societies many times have some type of mental illness where they are super focused, super goal oriented and do not fall within the same categories of normal human brain functioning. Your illness is not more important than someone else's it may be sadder or more debilitating but it does not give you the right to tell someone else that they cannot talk about theirs.

    To all the overly sensitive people saying its wrong... I myself suffer from mental illness and it has had enormous effects on my life. But I take no offense in what rory said, and actually agree with him. The comparison is very accurate . The crushing fight for perfection, the suffering at falling short or failing when you have put in so much work , and to keep fighting... that is what training for competition is, and is the same shit I go through with OCD on a daily basis. For example, maybe i have a phobia of large crowds and it makes my anxiety really high. But I do it anyway, I dont have to do it, could avoid it and stay calm temporarily , but i cant allow myself to do that, I purposefully put myself in those situations until I overcome it. Same shit as training, a workout can seem crazy and difficult, but these guys willingly do it despite the suffering to overcome it. The obsession to pursue perfection is so comparable to the origins of certain mental illnesses like justin Green commented below. So lets stop making everything offensive and cant say this cant say that, yeah its not the same thing if you dont choose to have it, but its pretty clear what Rory was saying and he did not mean it in a negative way , so why all the fuss about it. People chill out , relax, and dont try to make everything such a big deal

    People with mental illnesses do not volunteer themselves for suffering and the suffering they experience is not rewarded with glory
    CF athletes volunteer themselves for suffering and they are rewarded with glory - that only differs in degree, not kind, from any other athlete in any other sport
    I get Rory's intention and I don't think he meant it how it has come across.

  • @pinchofsalt1
    @pinchofsalt1 7 років тому

    'Mental Illness' is never a choice; it isn't something people choose for themselves like competitive CrossFit athletes do (I'm a member of a box btw).
    I suspect the title was deliberately chosen to spark debate and controversy (I mean look at the way the debate has divided between the 'don't be so sensitive' and the 'don't joke at the expense of others' camps!).
    If the ad had said CrossFit is very much like OCD, requiring ritualistic behaviour and routine, it perhaps would've been closer to the truth. But then we wouldn't get to debate it here, with strangers, on the internet, with no real resolution.

    The comparison is inappropriate. However, addiction is considered a type of mental illness and all of the top level games athletes do have an addictive personality to be able to train as relentlessly as they do. Those bashing the video need to take a step back and consider all the good Crossfit has done in this world.

People don't choose to have mental illnesses nor do they want to. mental illnesses aren't there to make people people better or stronger or whatever crossfit does. everything rory said about crossfit games athletes is accurate and all that's great but it's not a mental illness. and yes correct language matters in this time so honestly get used to it. why are you so annoyed by political correctness?

Ultimately it doesn't matter, because you're both seeking the same thing: fitness and a healthy lifestyle. What does it matter how you get there? You don't like a training style? Then don't do it. But don't try and force yours upon other people. An MMA fighter would beat a Crossfitter in the Octagon, a Crossfitter would beat an mixed martial arts fighter in the Crossfit Games. Both sports are incredible to watch, can't you just chill?
