However, everyone seemed to be more focused on her strange behaviors towards Celine Dion who presented her with the award! Later in the evening, Jay-Z added to the headlines with his controversial speech advising the Grammy's to "get it right" about Beyoncé! But what do their body language, facial expressions and word choice reveal? Find out NOW!

Hey Everyone! Glad everyone is enjoying the video, loving the respectful conversations in the comments 😊. I have one important ellaboration and a controversial thought I wanted to share so here goes.
    1) I only saw one comment about this but I, myself, am not entirely satisfied with how i explained it so I want to clarify. When I say that "surprise doesn't last very long" I'm talking about surprise as a behavior and expression, NOT as a feeling. The reason surprise is a VERY reliable universal expression (expressed the same way across cultures) is because we know exactly what the body and mind are doing. When something surprises us, our brain instantly needs to assess to figure out what to do, as a result, everything opens up, to get as much information as possible, But that, behaviorally, doesn't last when we're not in a social situation. Usually, everything opens up, then as we figure out what's happening, the expression shifts. Now you may go on to FEEL surprised, or shocked, or processing, but even as you're feeling that way the eyes and mouth don't typically stay open for long. Surprise is different from say sadness or joy in that regard, if something is making you happy, you can hold the smile, and continue to interact but with surprise it's very very rare to see someone walk around and continue to interact with the mouth hanging open and the eyes wide open. As a mentalist, who's literal job it is to create surprise, I might see someone react to a trick with held surprise but, again, this is more about them trying to communicate how mind blown they are than actually subconsciously emoting with surprise, and even then, it's very rare to see it held for long.
ok thanks for coming to my Ted Talk on surprise, moving on, I have been REALLY thinking about something for the last 3 days and I want to share it with you all and see what you think. Let's try to stay on topic without getting too polarized here but I realize there are some controversial subjects in this thought.
As an analyst I have several techniques for keeping my biases in check as much as I can, I often challenge my conclusions and assume I'm wrong to see what new information I will gather from that angle. One of the ways I do this is to pretend like the person I'm analyzing is someone else, this really helps me see if emotions or feelings are affecting my analysis. As such, I have asked myself for days now, If Amber Heard or Meghan Markle or Jada Pinkett Smith had done EXACTLY what Taylor Swift did, in the exact same way, what would the public opinion be? And I honestly think that if it was someone like those 3 individuals, they would get ripped to shreds with very very little support or defense. That's why I kept saying in the video that justifications don't erase the behavior, I think that the love a lot of people have for Taylor Swift colors this event in a certain tint but if it was someone they didn't like, the same behavior would be seen as something entirely different. I feel like Taylor Swift fans should REALLY reflect on the following, if Taylor Swift was presenting an award to someone they don't like (Meghan, Jada, etc) and that person behaved exactly the same way that Taylor did, would they make excuses for them as well? If so, great. If not, that's the very definition of bias. I think if the key players in this scenario were different, the public discourse would also be different; what do you guys think?

Beautifully said. It’s funny how when you said surprise isn’t held I thought about Sheinelle Jones in the clip you often play in your Intro on the today show with her mouth hanging open when you performed for her. But you’re right this is her trying to communicate how mind blown she is. Love that.
And yes! Totally agree with your second point. If this was Meghan Markle she would be getting destroyed. No excuses.

      @3DogMama 8 місяців тому +23

Thanks for the clarification; it’s really helpful. And I agree that there would be a much bigger (justifiable?) blowback if, say, Amber did this to Meryl or something like that, because Amber is nearly universally disliked, while Tay-Tay is nearly universally beloved. I won’t make excuses for Taylor. She should know better as a 34 yo international celebrity. Or, at the bare minimum, have people who tell her how to behave (which they likely did after the fact). Thanks for another fascinating, objective analysis of a timely topic that has a lot of people picking sides and throwing unnecessary shade. 🥰

@@michellelucas7985 Your reply didn't tag me but from the wording I think you're talking to me?
My problem isn't with people being disappointed. My problem isn't even with people expressing their disappointment. I mean take this very comment - "It is not that she didn't hug her. She didn't even look at Celine" both of those are objectively true sentences. I believe they are totally warranted. "People with zero etiquette do better" could totally be replaced with "I hope in the future she remembers to be kind to everyone around her, even when she has a lot else on her mind" without losing any of the central meaning, am I right? On the other hand, it also doesn't polarize or shame people. I'm all for providing feedback and criticism because that IS how we grow. It's when that turns from helpful feedback to a personal attack that the person usually turtles down or thinks "if I'm already a bad person/not going to please this person ever, I'm not sure why I would even try". I don't think Taylor Swift is going to see any of these comments and I think she has a thick enough skin that she wouldn't let it get to her. But I think it's always good to train people to do it in all circumstances
In that same vein, my reply wasn't exactly a shining example of a perfect comment either. I get irritated easily and am still working on not letting that influence my word choice. But thanks for keeping yours respectful

@@xsara31ii I am sorry if I have a negative impression. Yes, I can be touched (so long as I'm not in crisis) but need to be prepared and do much better in smaller settings. That photo shoot wasn't live streaming. We have no idea how long it'll took to get those few images nor weather or not she had less than dignified moments following the touch. She was able to sit which definitely helps. I also have a hunch (since she was able to be there) that she had recently had treatment. It's usually much more controlled following treatments. I, too, had my heart go out to her for lack of the slightest acknowledgement, but I see it happen in my own life a lot. I've asked my closest friends why and they said they are more comfortable with me moving to touch them or join in conversations because they are scared to trigger spasms. I in no way meant offense, just hoping to raise awareness for not only those with SPS, but with many neurological disorders. I also was wondering if any of this applied to this situation at all. That would require knowing what Taylor knew about SPS prior to this evening.

I'm a fan of TS but not to the point of blindness. She is what, 34 years old and has all the benefit of feedback and training available to her but she has the body language of a much less mature person (could be a result of her innate personality, without going into any analysis about that) who is often not aware of what her body is conveying (the neck hugs, hunched shoulders, the sense of acting that comes through some of her public moments). I feel like it's time for her to raise her own bar of self respect and self esteem so that she can grow into a phase of maturity (my opinion). She is usually so aware of bringing others into her world that I'm baffled about the lack of on stage acknowledgement of CD - at least 2 opportunities missed and then an extra one for not acknowledging the miss within a day of it all is a 3rd. I'm another dissapointed "fan".

Spidey, my analysis of the Taylor Swift incident is that she was not genuinely surprised to win the award. She was expecting it - and why wouldn't she? She's won it 3 times before, and her popularity and star power is at an all time high. It was more likely to be her than anyone else. So, she's not really surprised, but she decided, perhaps in advance, that she was going to do a whole "I'm so surprised" performance piece. As you say, it's hard to maintain surprise for a long time, yet she managed to hold a slack-jawed OMG facial expression for a solid couple of minutes - all for something she had experienced many times before. It's feigned surprise, no question about it. It looked very contrived to me - like she already knew how she wanted it to play out - including taking Lana up onto the stage with her. The fact that Lana resisted was actually annoying to her because it wasn't what she had planned for. That's why she was so determined to make it happen. I think the reason she didn't acknowledge Celine is because she was immersed in her own performance piece and she didn't have enough cognitive bandwidth left to factor in Celine. It wasn't a natural looking celebration and it did look very poor in terms of the way she took the award without making eye-contact. I agree that the photo with Celine later looks very contrived and not at all warm. It was pure PR damage control. So overall, Taylor won her award, but she gets an F for how her acceptance routine played out.

What bothered me about what Taylor did is exactly what bothered you - The lack of acknowledgment of not just Celine Dion handing her the award but that an actual human was standing there, handing her this award -- forget it was even Celine! I remember once seeing a celebrity accept an award and go up and get it from a paid model for the award show, I can’t remember who it was but I was amazed that they looked at the unknown paid model in the eye and thanked them for handing them their award - I was a teenager when I saw this and it really stood out to me. I think Taylor Swift is an incredibly talented person - Obviously, award after award, album after album and now worth over a billion dollars - She is living the dream accomplishing everything a human being would want to accomplish in life really……. She could use a piece of humble pie, in my opinion. She was a dink to Celine period. Is she a bad person? I wouldn’t go that far but she was a dink and I don’t think there is any way around that. The photo after doesn’t make up for that moment - That could have been her PR team making it happen. I don’t get this obsession culture as “fans” were we love someone’s music and art, and because of this we stand by everything they say and do and fight online with others to honor them etc - I like a lot of her music but in the same breath I can say she looked like an asshole on the Grammys. Another great analysis, Spidey! There’s much to say about the behavior & language of both Taylor Swift & Jay-Z…but what I kept noticing out of the corner of my eye was how classy Blue Ivy was during Jay-Z’s speech. She is only 12 years old, yet gave away nothing with her facial expressions during her dad’s speech (at least in the clips you showed). I’m sure she has strong opinions, given who her parents are. Yet she just stood by with a lovely polite smile on her face. What a classy young lady. Very impressive.

She is not a natural on her public persona like Miley Cirus and Celine nor she portrays a ton of confidence she is likeable or deserving of her talent. It’s mind blown how she lived her last year selling out arenas, saw first hand how well accepted her album was and still be dead shocked to win. I just don’t see her being genuine as one would have a certain level of perception of one’s work, level of achievement and acceptance by the public. So after all she accomplished this last year to not even once have imagined, or dreamed she could have won. Mind blowing! Come on! Oh I just did this album out of pure love and passion! I am
So surprised I won! Her talent is undeniable, but her character comes out as mostly played out and calculated to a great extent… perhaps she did not come out of the little inexperienced talented good girl portray that made her famous and loved in the beginning stages of her carrier! For some time now, I see incongruence in her public persona appearances around her behaviour, her age and her talent vs level of fame. Not sure if all is just PR move that sells and keeps her relevant for longer… if it is I feel like it’s being overly used and more people are getting aware of it! Even her fans aren’t able to deny it at this point. But I am not being paid to wake her up from her little girl era nor I have experience to what sells. I respect Celine and Taylor both. I agree that this was an awkward moment, and I feel a little bad for Celine. Also, understanding that I am superimposing my own personality into the situation, I could see myself being such a scatterbrain and so intent on making sure that people I personally love are included in the moment, that I just spaced and behaved like a demented dork. (Please don't come for me, I'm not saying TS is a demented dork - that's me when I'm surprised.) Afterwards, I would have been mortified and said, "OMG. How awful! I completely snubbed Celine!" and then gone to find her, apologized and tried to explain what short-circuited in my brain in that moment. And last thought - if that's the best pic that occurred between Taylor and Celine, I probably would have opted to write a public statement that acknowledged the snub happened, apologized profusely, acknowledged her personally and professionally and chalked it up to a brain fart. The pic looks, to me, as if Celine can't wait to get away. The whole thing was unfortunate. 🤷🏻‍♀️ No matter what the public thinks, I hope Taylor was able to privately do the best she could to smooth it over with Celine. (Who may actually be thinking, "No biggie. Let's move along, nothing to see here, Folks.") Humans do love to celebrate a moment of drama, don't we? God forbid we give an unintentional faux pas a little grace and let it slip by without creating as much of a fuss as possible.

Tbh Celine Dion looks exhausted in the photo. Imagine being unwell and having to "be on" for god knows how many hours.

I loved the analysis, per usual! You really changed my mind about the interaction between Taylor and Celine. As far as the Jay-Z speech, there are several points of information I believe people are missing. Especially with him just being pulled into a beef between Nicki & Meg, prior to the show, in which he was called out for basically not standing up for Nicki who clearly should have won her own Grammy by now. She too has been placed in categories other than Rap most times. Many artists have felt the same. Before he even mentioned Beyoncé you can see him searching the room. I do this sometimes. When I’m speaking publicly or teaching, and I’m nervous about the topic, I’ll end up using a story about myself or someone close to me to parallel the topic. I do so because sometimes the trusted information, given to me by others experiencing issues with an institution I’m a leader in, may not be wise to share outside of that trust. Trust me, the Carters don’t really care about the Grammy itself. It is the control the institution still has over Black artists that they Care about. Why? Because he is OUR elder statesman. He has worked himself into that position. So when he comes home, to hip hop, we scrutinize actions of those who we have pushed to sit at the table on our behalf. As a former artist, I fully understood what he was saying. May not have been the right person to use to get his point across, but it is where his comfort lies. I’m not mad at that at all.
Good luck on your shows. I hope to catch one one day!❤

I'm not a Swiftie but I do watch award shows. Love your analysis first of all. Gives different perspectives. From every win I have seen Taylor get she has always done that hand shake w her producer, she runs up & hugs everyone, but I was shocked she didn't hug/thank Celine but that's me but I also don't think it was intentional. It felt more distracted to me but I also think Celine felt a type of way about it. She has this disease, she came out to give this award & to not even get acknowledged yeah again that would make me feel a type of way, so if Celine did I would understand.
As far as Jay Z/The Carters I'm over the crying every time they don't get their way. They are happy when she wins but when she doesn't "they (award shows) aren't getting it right." Did it ever occur to them u can have a great song but not a great album! Bee has had a lot of great singles but doesn't mean her full album is great. His statement was hypocritical...they aren't getting it right but their daughter has won Grammy's and Bee has won the most. They throw a tantrum every time Taylor wins over her but as he said metrics don't lie.
Look at the yr both had last yr...both went on tour & both had music films through AMC distribution. By doing that they cut out the middle man & the artist make more!!! Why did Bee get a concert film & out of her Netflix deal/series/contract? Taylor! Taylors dad is the reason for AMC distribution music films! Otherwise Bee would still OWE Netflix 2 or 3 films that she was already paid for. By going through AMC distribution & doing a music film/documentary she got paid TWICE! She got paid off the film & she was paid upfront through Netflix for the series she didn't fulfill her contract on.
Now let's look at financials....both went on tour & both had concert films...Taylor grossed over 1 Billion & Bee less than 600 million. Based on Jayz metrics I think the numbers speak for themselves. Again u can have great songs but not necessarily a great album hence why she hasn't won. Just cuz the Carters feel entitled doesn't mean it should happen. And that's my issue w them...the entitlement! When Bee wins all is good, smiling, they are getting it right & when she doesn't sue has puss face, comments are made, she makes it known she doesn't want to be there & it's getting old. When u have to go to the younger artist to get out of contracts, boost your income, use that same person to boost your concert film but hate on that same artist every time they win over u..maybe it's time to retire 🤷‍♀️ They hate on Taylor yet Taylor is literally the reason Bee got out of her Netflix series & had a concert film on the big screen! She had np using Taylor for PR for her film! Smh
Great analysis! Thanks for sharing ❤

@mewho6199 100%. Her formula of songwriting may wear thin after a while, how many guys will be interested, knowing they will eventually be a song heard round the world? Frankly, for a 34 year old woman, she hasn't grown up and out of friendship bracelets and little swifties, it's a little concerning.

The Celine Dion moment was unfortunate, it will forever be remembered and in only a negative way. TS should have made a public thank you to Celine immediately after, it would have gone so far.
As for JZ you can tell by B's face that she was not impressed, at all. Which is surprising because it came across as planned, you would think she would have known it was coming.
And boo you're close yet still so far to my neck of the woods. I'll have to start trying to convince my husband to take a trip 😊

Love your videos, love your animation/mannerisms/presentation. I definitely stayed up way too late watching them. I think your camera needs to come down 2 or 3 inches and be rotated slightly upward to perfect the frame, and I love your backdrop/decor. The look is very cool and tasteful, as are your lighting and editing work. I especially love the content and how you stay objective and kind-hearted.
