Starting positions evaluation and game predictions: SIPS: Solid first spot, but the 5/8/10 Ore-Wheat-Sheep is probably better. Pointed his first road the right way. Kinda griefed himself with the second placement though - that's a TON of sheep, and at best he's gonna 3-1 it, and it's not even super rare to be great trade bait except the occasional one to Malf. The 3/11/10 just SE is a much stronger and more balanced second settlement, and you can still build to the sheep spot if you want - NL needs the 11/4 3:1 port as his first settlement anyway. Probably ends up 3rd or 4th. KORY: Picked the best first settlement, BUT POINTED HIS ROAD THE WRONG WAY. Any juicy centre spot he's trying to take is too juicy to leave open, he'll never be able to build with that road, needed to point his road to the coast. Got a really nice second settlement too, but should have pointed his road down or to the right. By settlement spots alone he should win this, but he's racing Malf for his only real port, and started behind because that first road is pointing the wrong way. If he wins the race to the 3:1 port he should win, maybe come second. If he loses the race for the 3:1 port, he may just get strangled out of settlement spots and come 3rd or 4th. MALF: Solid first spot, takes the rarest resource and an 8 wheat, road points to the 3:1, full points. Second settlement feels super risky though - you've got a ridiculous amount of wheat, no options for wheat port, and your only 3:1 port access you have to race Kory for. Yeah sure, the brick port is nice given what you have, but if you miss that 3:1 port you feel pretty dead. Last place if you lose the race for the 3:1 port, otherwise they could come anywhere from 1st-3rd. Funnily enough, I'm not sure either player knows that they're racing the other to stay alive, so we'll see what happens. Thankfully for him, NL and Sips will be natural trade partners, as neither have wheat and both have an excess of a resource he doesn't. NL: Probably the 2nd strongest set of settlements after Kory, but has more port options. I didn't like the 8/10/5 quarry at first, thought the 9/6/2 fit with the other settlement better, but there's no way he could leave the quarry up for Malf to take, so probably the best choice. 11/4 should be your first settlement, will give you the stronger of the two 3:1 ports you can pick. Could have placed his road from the 8/10/5 settlement facing south - you'll get the 11/4 3:1 port anyway, and would give him the tiniest amount of wheat. Could have also placed it left, but that would be pretty greedy, and it's hard to win a race to the 3/10/11 against two other players unless you're on heavy road materials. Probably 1st or 2nd, maybe 3rd if Malf both wins the race and pops off. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hope this isn't unwanted, I've just sunk a lot of time into Catan both IRL and online, can't help but analyze things, wondered how accurate I was. Of course, I had the benefit of more time than they could take in analyzing, and have slightly changed how I thought about things from first placement while writing, but wanted to see how far off I am at the end. Hopefully it's interesting to someone else, if not, oh well :)
5:07 - Maybe Kory realises they're racing? Malf doesn't, you need to place to the 3:1 port, or hold your road! 7:11 - Nope, Kory doesn't realise, you don't get points for connecting up random roads here. Save that wood/brick for the race! 8:30 - Don't trade with Kory, Malf! Not unless you can get that settle this turn! You don't want to give him resources! 10:40 - 6 Wheat or 3 Brick is a much stronger robber here - steal from your competition! 11:19 - Congratulations Malf, you're officially alive in the game! RIP Kory, we barely knew you. 15:15 - Man, this turn was so valuable for you, but I just hate it. That's 100% the wrong road to place (go towards the 11-4!), and the second city just puts a massive target on your back, whereas a settlement on your 11/4 3:1 port attracts less attention while being arguably stronger. Your 8 is already blocked, you've got way too much unfocused production, the NORTH 3:1 port makes so much more sense! 16:20 - What's that road doing Sips? You could actually grief NL pretty hard by sniping that 11/4 spot, and you'd get brick as part of the deal, but that's just a random road. 18:10 - Wow, that's a good amount of ore. Imagine if you had a 3:1 port NL, it might actually be useful! 20:25 - Another good argument for the port - you don't float as many cards if you can actually use any of them at some point, makes you safer from the robber! 22:00 - No-one can snipe the middle of your road, you don't need to connect it yet. If you'd placed those two roads to the 11/4 you'd be set to pick up some brick soon, and NL would have a tougher time in this game. 22:18 - That's a big, expensive road which is getting you a 5/2 settle spot. You could have gone for the 3/11/10! There's no real competition atm! 23:12 - There's the road I wanted to see from NL like 10mins ago! Sips can't really contest the 11/4 any more, you're pretty golden TBH. 24:03 - NL's face matches how I feel. Why are you extending your road to a 3:1 port you can't build at? Such a waste. 25:14 - You could try for other trades, or use your 3:1 port, to get that settlement. My guess is NL tunneled on City for some reason, but the settlement was another option, and probably a stronger one. 30:26 - Things can always change in Catan, but I feel like I can call it for NL here. He's got decent econ, a 3:1 port, a natural trading partner in Malf and quite a few outs for winning (settlement places, city options, dev cards). Sips and Malf for 2nd and 3rd (unsure who's 2nd and who's 3rd), Kory last with his random road to nowhere.
0:30 the highest win rate iin average is 1.- second pick 2.- first pick 3.- 3rd pick 4.- last pick a guy called Treeckosaurus did an analysis of like 800 games a while ago and it shows some interesting stats.
In regards to highest win rate positions I’d say it totally depends on the board, if there are lots of good starting spots I think it’s better to be 3rd or 4th, but if there aren’t very many good spots to start with I think first is usually best
I trust your opinion on pickled jalapenos but from personal cooking experiences (as long as the jalapeno has a good amount of seeds, all don't) fresh jalapenos are ALWAYS more spicy than any other method of preparation, putting fresh (uncooked) jalapenos on a hot sandwich with a spicy sauce is the spiciest way to eat jalapenos without adding a spicier pepper ingredient.
ok so, a mature jalapeno is always going to be spicier than a young one. the drying process gives them time to fully mature, so a dried jalapeno is going to be the spiciest kind. in addition, i've eaten them fresh and dried. fresh isn't as intense in my experience.
I've actually learnt about capsaicin and pain signalling in general, my understanding is that the "spiciness" of a food being increased due to vinegar is as follows. Very generally, our free nerve endings (same ones that react when you get burned hurt physically) can react to capsaicin. When this happens inflammatory and pain mediating molecules are released, causing peripheral sensitization (increased signalling from pain associated neurons = pain). This also produces an increased level of nerve growth hormone which binds to trkA receptors on sensory neurons and regulates gene expression and activity of certain channels like TRPV1, nerve growth hormone is also a major regulator of inflammatory pain. Protons activate the cation channel TRPV1 causing the cell to signal, and so a lower pH from the acetic acid in vinegar = more protons = more TRPV1 activation = nerves depolarize (signal) more often causing trkA mobilization to the membrane = increased sensitivity and responsiveness to nerve growth hormone = more TRPV1 moved to the membrane = more signalling = more pain. This is all very general and pain signalling is very complex so I apologize if I haven't explained it well. If you would like to read more there has been research in rat cells in pH changes and signalling in the paper "Extracellular pH and neuronal depolarization serve as dynamic switches to rapidly mobilize trkA to the membrane of adult sensory neurons" Bray et. al, J Neurosci. 2013 May 8;33(19):8202-15
I didn't see any comments on it but seeing the board with randomized tile numbers was a breath of fresh air, at this point I'd assumed the online version forced tile groups and numbers like OG Catan
Yikes, NLSS curse strikes once again 😬 It's been a while, but you know it was gonna happen again sooner or later. RIP Gilbert Gottfried, he will be sorely missed.
Re: the "reality" tv shows and the people who can't get around in a new city... I just find the show runners don't bring people on that are going to be good at the "game"... like they're not gonna have someone apply going "Ya me an my best friend who have lived together for years now without any conflict, I can speak 14 languages and my friend is a Geography major and we're both on the debate team as well as co-captains on our football team...etc etc" ... not a chance those 2 are getting on a show! No.. they want people who are gonna come with inherent drama so they don't have to even try to write in some conflict to try and make their shit entertaining!
apparently placing 2nd is barely a better advantage than first or third, fourth tends to be worst off depending on the skill of the other players that placed before them

Based, based
It’s true, I was there

Justed started the video, cringed at green and reds placements
I was waiting patiently for this video to drop, I got rewarded. Catan is the best series
As a great man once said "True so true that's very true"
People are saying this
What a place to cut off Sips: "Did you guys ever see the episode of Springer where he..."
NL discarding the wrong cards when he has settlements/cities in hand via bank trades is going to turn me into the Joker
Never punished.
0:30 the highest win rate iin average is

My girlfriend got into NL because of SAP, now every night she asks to watch “the bald man” together hahaha
one day...
Everyone pogs at the egg
He's bald!?!?
U sure she is not talking about the other bald man
I'm not the only one! My gf does the same 🤣

Kory's voice is the perfect blend of the other three's
Sometimes I found it hard to differentiate him from Sips

Bro that title is so good.
To answer the question nobody asked, I would've started at the 4/8/port and 9/10/11 spots and been a wood magnate.
A lot of reality tv is fun if you have someone to watch it with. If you watch it by yourself it is just kind of sad.
Absolutely love this
