Grigory Sokolov continues to study piano for 10/12 hours a day. He lives for music, to which his devotion is extraordinary; he deserves all our admiration, as lovers of classical music and art.
I attended his concert in the Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian in Lisbon in March 2023. He played works by Henry Purcell and Mozart. I was able to buy one of the last tickets and sat way up in the balcony, probably 50 meters away. Yet, every note was clearly discernible and crystal-clear. The audience waited until the last note was no longer audible, and after a moment of silence, burst in applause. He gave us six (6) encores to a standing-up audience, until the lights sent us away. He had been playing for almost 3 hours. I am humbled by the privilege.
I had a similar experience in München, May 2023. I had never seen someone have such long standing ovations. It was magical, every piece he played, especially the extras - seven of them. I could also agree, it was a privilege to listen to such a mastery for less money than a mainstream concert ticket.
How wonderful to hear Grisha playing emotionally complex Schumann and Rachmaninov with his outmost mastery! In many years of attending his concerts first in St Petersburg, many years ago, and now all over theEurope, thanks to YT, I think, he became one of the few giants, we never stop admiring and love. Sokolov is without a doubt one of, if not the best pianist in the world. I had the pleasure of hearing him a few years ago and I instantly fell in love with everything he played that evening, including this beautiful work by Schumann.

The perfomance is inspirational / aspirational as is your comment. As an appreciator, I am trying to understand my reaction which is quite emotional, with gratitude and beyond the sheer fabulousness of Sokolov. Probably makes no sense especially when my eyes are clouded by tears.
This is pure gold. I've never heard this Schumann piece being played with so much clarity. Inner voices and the complexity of the musical texture are treated with so much care and respect as if he's playing Bach - and the result is an utmost beauty. This interpretation is so inspirational that it almost felt like I'm listening to a whole new piece. Thank you so much for uploading this concert. It made my day.
Agreed! Its meticulous shaped and never sound tedious at all. Whats your favorite part though? I think the innig parts in the second piece are beyond mindblowing! Never heard them with such distinct voicing and yet so much sonority. I like to think that those parts are the kind of counterpoint Schumann said to have learned from Jean Paul.😅
maestro just plays slowly, everything, in this stage of his musical life. set 0.75 speed while listening to others, so you will be able to hear a clarity as well

Personally, I am impressed the most by how he treated the faster passages - say the fifth mvt where the impulsive theme is played as non-legato - like I said, as if he's playing Bach. This to me is an intentionally rejection of the cliche romanticism narrative about the composer (manic Florestan vs. reflective Eusebius) created by the composer himself. Schumann's music is far more interesting than that, and doesn't have to sound like the result of a split personality.

Quite so. Given the fact that when Maestro Sokolov plays, "every note has meaning," it's hard to imagine him playing a wrong note, although every musician has done so.
Without question, technically very nice playing. However, Mr. Sokolov doesn't, in my opinon, reach the depth of, for example, Klara Würtz as far as Schumann works are concerned. I completely agree with the opinion given in The Gramophone re complete works of Schumann; namely, it is stated that Klara Würtz's take on these pieces is probably the best interpretation out there. Unbelievable poetry, beauty and humanity in her playing. Mr Sokolov leaves me most of the times untouched. There is a certain coldness and "sameness" in his playing which makes his playing monotonous.
This is still by far one of the best live performance over the decade. I kept returning to this vedio over and over again. Everytime I discover something new. This is what you will get from listerning music played by the legend
His articulation is beyond this world. He chooses the perfect tempi to accommodate for this. No single note gets lost in translation. Beautiful tone and finishing. Great cantabile. Perfect balance. What's not to like about this man's sorcery? Only mind you, his way is so revealing that listening should be dosed carefully. Take it in little sips, not all in one go. Then you will have the best experience of pianomusic that exist at this moment in time. And Pletnev of course.
Nicely put ;) I had the pleasure of hearing Sokolov and Pletnev on Stage and both were extraordinary - and excentric. One goes with the other, I guess :) I cannot tell which Rendition I liked more, the Kreisleriana or the Preludes, thank God I must not :)
You are right. But he pays all this with sometimes too slow tempo. The 3rd movement of Schumann is "very excited". It means fast tempo as well as high passion. I miss both in Sokolov's playing in this movement

What is wrong about comparing the playing of different pianists, as long as it is done in a polite way? Sokolov in recent performances is an outlier, choosing extremely slow tempi. It has become a fashion in recent years to favor performances that are the most 'relaxing', which misses much of the point of classical music.

I still have in my ears Horowitz playing this piece, live... It was like the ocean coming into the room... the midle section, a small boat floating in still waters...unforgetable! And the colours as well... here it all sounds the same to me, not even much of a dinamic! Sorry!

Just like you described: ocean coming to room, very passionate! I really can't express how much appreciation I have for Mr sokolov's talent. Everything is clear and beautiful and expressive but never overdone and you can hear all of the inner beauties and the magic of the music comes out!! I have only recently, unfortunately, become acquainted with his talent and I'm so happy that I have heard such beautiful music!! This is beauty honestly that I will remember for the rest of my life!

I agree, he is one of the remaining few pianists alive today who are associated with the golden age of piano playing of the last century. There is another legendary pianist who is still alive and concertizes around the world, but very underrated, listen to Jeffrey Biegel. Hear his Rachmaninoff, stunning.

i dont care so much for his Kreislerana, but he plays everything without a care if everyone else plays it differently...he is "unique" in the best sense of the word...and thank goodness the acoustics and piano don't let him down

All honour to mr Grigory Sokolov for playing this so wonderful. A long life with this music has given him certain insights in how this shall be played. But I have to say that some of Rachmaninoffs preludes are new to me. Lucky for me, now when I have discovered them!
I love how he makes everything he plays completely own...without a care for conventional ways of interpretation...and it works! In terms of sound quality, he's rarely been recorded as beautifully as he was on this occasion...
Growing in the USSR. I never came across this great soul. Sokolov is not only the best, but he seems to live in music. He doesn’t appear in any interviews either.
He makes the most translucent sound. You hear the Schumann like you've never heard it before; elements of those melodies that require exceptional technique to be heard. Same with Liszt; and it tells you that both of these composers must have been great at the keyboard. Liszt certainly was, but I'm betting that Schumann wasn't shabby either.

Ведь не обязательно быть музыкантом, чтобы знать величайших композиторов и учёным, чтобы знать величайших учёных. Уже давным-давно всех расставили по своим местам. Если кто-то напишет, что Моцарт - величайший композитор, ну это ещё куда ни шло. Хотя кто-то скажет, что Бах, Бетховен, Шопен и т. д. Но если кто-то скажет, что Тихон Хренников, то это конечно уже перебор. Вот прямо сейчас мне на ум пришло, как певица Валерия в Инстаграме написала, что Мацуев - величайший музыкант современности. То есть он даже как пианист далеко не величайший, а ведь есть ещё и певцы, композиторы, исполнители на других музыкальных инструментах, дирижёры. Вроде Валерия - солидный человек, в Гнесинке училась. И вот такое выдала.

What is wrong about comparing the playing of different pianists, as long as it is done in a polite way? Sokolov in recent performances is an outlier, choosing extremely slow tempi. It has become a fashion in recent years to favor performances that are the most 'relaxing', which misses much of the point of classical music.
Such lovely natural voicing. And such care for phrasing. A class for young pianists.
How the beauty shows up in this tempo. Sokolov is a genius.

Beautifull sounds he extracts from the instrument! Wonderfull audience too, mesmerized by the wonderfull playing, quiet as mice and no coughing.
I love the tempo of the first piece, every pianist seems to rush it but this is the first time I can enjoy it!
I still have in my ears Horowitz playing this piece, live... It was like the ocean coming into the room... the midle section, a small boat floating in still waters...unforgetable! And the colours as well... here it all sounds the same to me, not even much of a dinamic! Sorry!

I really can't express how much appreciation I have for Mr sokolov's talent. Everything is clear and beautiful and expressive but never overdone and you can hear all of the inner beauties and the magic of the music comes out!! I have only recently, unfortunately, become acquainted with his talent and I'm so happy that I have heard such beautiful music!! This is beauty honestly that I will remember for the rest of my life!

An under appreciated pianist who continues to enthrall audiences.
He makes the most translucent sound. You hear the Schumann like you've never heard it before; elements of those melodies that require exceptional technique to be heard. Same with Liszt; and it tells you that both of these composers must have been great at the keyboard. Liszt certainly was, but I'm betting that Schumann wasn't shabby either.

I do believe he makes the slower sections of the Schumann sound more cantabile, more flowing and fluid than even Horowitz.

Don’t get me wrong, I adore Sokolov and think he can do ANYTHING at the piano.
I generally agree but will defend that he is really able to do more luscious voicing with the slower tempi.

Min 21:05 bis 21:21. Hier entscheidet sich für mich alles. Hier überlegt Schumann. Reiner Abgrund, reine Hölle, oder doch noch etwas Mut fassen. Ein wenig noch an das Gute glauben. Unglaublicher Moment. Jedes mal, wenn ich diesen Abschnitt höre.
