Good video. The way I was taught was to come to full draw and move your sight on to the bullseye and hold for a few seconds, then move off the bullseye and then back and hold again, repeating until you get tired and then let down without ever shooting. This is because your tendency to punch the trigger happens as you are moving onto the bull, so moving on and off trains you not to have that reaction.
Everyone can have panic. Your thought on practice to the point of it becoming routine is spot on. Last year, after archery hunting for 17 years, I had the largest buck I have had an opportunity for come and stand broadside at 20 yards. I literally could not get by bow drawn for the first 3 tries. When I finally got it drawn I passed through way high and never found him. Horrifying.
This is very much like long range rifle and instinctive pistol shooting. I never did this with my recurve. I learn from every video of yours I watch. Thank you.
Let's go Pens! I am using a B3 Hawk. I was punching it a ton this morning...to the point the cam started to take off once before I gathered it up. That release has adjustable tension. I had my brother change it up from light to heavy, even changed the tension spring on me. I can say this is the first day I was worried about the noise of smacking other arrows since I started. I made big strides in group size today.
Hey Jack, so you use more of a slow steady squeeze of the trigger? Do you do back tension with a index release such as curling your finger around the trigger and then pulling your elbow to something behind you to make the release fire? Not moving your trigger finger but using back tension instead
Great question! I definitely prefer the slow squeeze with the trigger finger. I'm not one to use "full" back tension with a trigger release. Although there are a lot of really high level shooters that do follow that method.
Great video, in fact all I've watched have been fantastic. you make things very easy to understand for beginners who are just getting into the sport and you don't get much more beginner than me! I just recently ordered a pse gobbler rts through a promotion at cabelas. all the reviews I read said mostly good things about the bow and it being a good fit for beginners. my only experience with shooting a compound bow was that of a friend with a draw length that wasn't sized for me but still had an absolute blast!! I'm curious if you have an opinion of the bow and if I mad an OK choice. I mostly plan on target shooting for now, but the thought of hunting is growing more and more in my mind. I've no experience with hunting but see the benefit in being self sufficient in terms of providing food. I know the gobbler is geared towards hunting turkey which I could see as a good segway into hunting game. also if you have any suggestions on arrow shafts for target shooting it would be much appreciated! i thought my bow came with arrows but I was wrong. thanks a bunch! love the channel and I hope it continues to grow.
Three letters EZV look at it up, I'm so happy with this sight, and it's not some new technology, my brother in law had a sight similar twenty years ago. But the EZV takes out a lot of guess work.
i shoot a lot of 3d tournaments and have no problem on 3d animals, but as soon as i shoot on targets i can't, i just can`t. but i found out, like you said, that if i put my finger behind, it just floats over the target NO PROBLEM!!. but again i can't get my finger over without panicking. its so annoying
I believe I have this problem right now myself. It's like a can't put the pin on the bullseye, but anything else I don't seem to be bothered. Maybe should just ditch those conventional targets all together anyway. You should really be using a target in the form of what you're hunting to condition your mind better.
You're an archer first and then a teacher.. No. You're a teacher first and then an archer. I can't make up my mind. Either way, I've learned a lot from your channel.
JUST GOT MY NEW BOW JUST HAVE TO GET IT SET UP AT BOW SHOP HAVE BEEN SHOOTING ABOUT TWO YEARS MY BOW SHOP IS ABOUT 5MINUTES AWAY & THE NEW BOW SHOP I WENT TO IS A HOUR AWAY CALLED COPPERHEAD OUTDOORS

@@averagejackarchery Thanks for the feedback! I'm the same way. I think the slow squeeze works best for me.
We call this snapping in. This is the best practice I know of for shooting. Bow pistol or riffle.
Best vids on youtube for archery
