Sorry to see this happen to you guys, I was able to meet you in Virginia and talk for a little bit. I actually build Cat engines and high performance Cat engines for a living. Most of the time when a Cat blows a head gasket it is because the liners have got low in the block. The head gasket crush is determined by the height of the liner above the spacer plate which needs to be at least .005" to .006". To correct it the liners have to be pulled and the block counterbored. The larger cam lobe is for the injectors and is that way because of the tremendous load on the roller building pressure in the injector. If you just need to put a head gasket on it to get going it will last for a while but should be checked out more when you all have some time. I wish I was closer I would help you out. I'd love to build you a nice high perf Cat in the off season. Hope all goes well.
I thought on a Cat, the liners set on the top deck?
@@ruds2600 They do sit on top of the deck then you have a spacer plate and metal gasket between the plate and block the fits around the liner flanges and is sandwiched between the head and block. Without the plate you would basically have a 1/4" gap between the head and block when you set the head on. This is on all 3300, 3400 and c15 series engines. To check liner protrusion you drop the liners in put the plate and gasket on and use bolts with a fiber and brass washer to hold everything down, then take a dial indicator on a sled and check how far they are above the top of the spacer. This determines your head gasket crush among other things. I have thought about doing a video with a step by step build on one of these engines, alot of the videos I have seen skip stuff that I consider critical in building a high performance diesel that is reliable.
@@WrightFamilyRacing2021 You counter bore that top deck that does not have one, and then shim that liner?
Do u think the wires would have been the problem first or the injector burned up
@@ruds2600 When you counterbore it you are actually cutting a groove in the top of the block itself and using a stainless shim to achieve your desired liner height. I usually start out with a 9Y3368 shim. Most of the time that will clean them up unless they have been cut before or the block is in bad shape. Cat makes a ton of different size shims.
As a x over the road owner operator, this brings my stress level up just watching.
This is what over the road truck owner operators go thru all the time.
Shady shops, mystery mark up on parts, "it should be fine" repairs etc.
Sitting and sleeping in weird shop parking lots etc/
This is why I started a heavy tow company, and learners over the years to work on my own stuff as much as possible...to help guys like this get towed to the right shops and not pay an arm and a leg.
So far the universe and the trucking gods have smiled upon me. I wish someone like my would of got ahold of you and towed you to a reputable shop for a reasonable rate. You could of got repaired right in record time.
Sorry about your luck.
On the bright side, you don't own a def or region emissions truck. You think your bill was bad? Imagine a emmmisons system that cost 15k on a engine with 800k miles that's about to pop. Those are some sad days.
Thanks for the video. We missed you in Denver but bought some extra merch to try and ease the pain a little and it was nice to be able to chat with Phantom with him not being busy tending to the car.
Those holes look like someone had some Wooden side rails on it. Good planning to have a back up vehicle. I myself have two kinds of luck which is shit and worse than shit so I try to keep 3 vehicles just for days like today when my wife gets taken out by a semi
Holy crap guys, i live in Arizona and you "picked" the worst spot in the state to break down. Long time mechanic here and I agree with Shawn about being organized with your parts/tools, it a sign of a professional. I hope this ordeal didnt give you a bad taste for Arizona, we love you guys here!!
Man that opening shot of the truck backing into that beautiful shop reminded me of a story about a high class car wash I heard on a Tuesday many moons ago.
Love the behind the scenes content and seeing what it actually takes to make that shit happen 👍
Plus he is a good story teller.
I love listening to the rants, gives me perspective.
YOU GUYS ARE GREAT..THE DETAILS AND THE BEHIND THE SCENE STORIES ARE EYE OPENING TO WHAT REALLY GOES ON WITH RACING, LOVE THAT YOU KEEP IT REAL. KEEP UP THE GOOD VIDEOS COMING AND KEEP WINNING,THANKS FOR SHARING...
I am the same way when my 6.0 power stroke went in my Excursion I got a bill from International for 15,000 I said hell no. Took the truck home. In pieces rebuilt it in my garage took me a month. I do the same thing line my garage with tables everything gets laid out as to how I took it off. Everything gets clean really good and put back together. I’m 100% with you with that.
After the original street outlaws you are the one person I still dig enough to watch like and comment even the behind the scenes stuff that are not flashy keep doing what you do
So when you have had your hands in as many Cat engines that a experienced Diesel Mechanic have. Where the hardware goes isn't a issue. Why?? Because most of these kits come with new hardware (At least the Rebuild kits we use on our C-15's)
And as for the Diagnosis, With the injector wiring harness being the root cause. Yes, That can and has caused this kind of catastrophic failure. And $4-K to $6-K for a complete head is NOT a bad price. Our last aftermarket Cat head cost us almost $10-K. You'll be fine, Ive seen worse getting repaired in a Walmart parking lot. At least you aren't in the lower end of this engine. That's where it gets really EXPENSIVE. Doing a in-frame today STARTS at $30-K for OEM Cat parts. And can exceed $40-K. What ppl forget is these Cat Engines are NO LONGER being made. Thanks to Obama and his EPA Regulations.
I know when y'alls luck turns around y'all going to be awesome. I'll always stand with y'all.
If I didn't know any better I'd think you were released of your normal crew chief duties with all these videos you've been able to edit and get uploaded for us. Much appreciated!
Npk season
Zàà see zed rrrr
The motto I live by also "It is what it is". Sucks you guys didn't make Bandimere. Only reason why I was going to go. Great job on pumping out the videos Phantom. As a fellow youtuber I know how editing can be sometimes.
Nice that you got back on the road and you got it. I knew backup plan setup for next year. Missed you here in Denver but made sure to buy a shirt from phantom. We'll see you next year!
This makes me miss my 24/7 roadside service job. Up to 100 hrs a week at one point many of those hours spent on the side of I-40 here in West Tennessee.
Oh wow. I was thinking the same thing! I spent about 20 years doing it up and down 55/155/412. In southeast Mo. including west Tennessee and north AR.
6 min in and I love the attitude. Stuff happens. Sucks but a good attitude is everything. Makes or breaks your day. Love the videos.
It’s awsome you guys took this situation and learned from it. Made a awsome decision to have a backup plan. Glad your all okay. I would still be at the mechanics shop figuring out how I’m going to pay for the repairs.
I’d say it over fueled and hydro locked to stretch those bolts. Hope your back up and running soon! I’d plan for a full on rebuild here soon maybe some extra umph while your at it
I have overhauled about 25 of those 3406E engines. CAT makes a thinner spacer plate that goes between the head & the block, the thinner spacer plate helps you achieve good cylinder liner protrusion WITHOUT removing the liners and machining the liner counter bores.
I really hope the mechanic checked liner protrusion correctly before he put the head on, liner protrusion should be at least .002, .006 is much better for longevity though
Glad you made it safely and didn’t lose a bunch of shit on the side of the road! We’re all pulling for you guys! Love to see you win one of these soon! 405 is and will always be my favorite team! The real OG’s! God bless
MURDER NOVA TEAM ARE THE HARDEST WORKERS IN RACING FOR 2022!😇 KEEP IT UP BOYS! LETS GO!😜 #1 CAR IN AMERICA! AND TEAM!
Adept Ape is the best 3400 series mechanic on UA-cam in my opinion 💪🏼🇺🇸
Listening to shawn talk about how he does everything like it’s a surgical room makes me wonder how he ever gets stuff fixed at the track lol
I just do it when he’s not paying attention lol
You did what you had to do, and as best as you can do in that situation! Great job on doing your best to protect what you worked for and trying to really make it to the next race.
It’s refreshing to see that you guys have such a positive attitude to everything, its easy to get caught up in negativity and spiral down the hate route. Move on tomorrow is another day and be happy. So much easier to live in that world. You’ve only got to lose one bold when working on stuff to then lay it out to bag it all up with labels. I’d always use old cardboard to put bolts or pushrods in order. Nothing worse than hunting around like you just dropped. A 10mm socket and it goes into another dimension between the ratchet and the floor 🤣 . Keep up doing what you’re doing cos “It is what it is” 😍
I have come to the conclusion that you guys love adventure. Maybe you can dial it down a degree or so. Serious now. I am very encouraged that you were able to help your self with the little Pete. Combining the ability to have a back up in an emergency AND reduce your costs at the same time is very well Done. Keep up the good work. No more excitement for a while please.
If determination decides how this goes ain't no stopping you guys!
Great content guys. Really appreciate your honesty and the behind the scenes of the life of a racer. God Bless and good luck
Props to the boys doing their thing. Anytime I break down I basically become a anxiety riddled man. I hate it. But still you boys are an inspiration whether you think it or not
Me too man, if I break down its a frustrating as playing cards with my brothers kids or somethin.
Shitty things are gonna happen in life no matter how hard we try for them not to... We can either be mad, angry and fly off the rails and still have to deal with the situation, or we can be calm, level headed and still have to deal with it...
@@CarsCatAliens easier said than done chief.
@@sjv6598 not really... Controlling ones attitude, and Temper should not be difficult..,
Welcome Lil Pete to the team 187 Customs. I believe Shawn's organized work makes things faster easier and more precise.👍
Damn!! $32K is a big nut to pay. I feel for you guys. Getting stranded in the middle of the nowhere is one thing, but getting that and a stressed mechanic not in his normal shop makes it that much worse. I feel for ya guys. The attitude by you guys is right tho. It’s hard, but shit happens. Just gotta roll with it. Not a cheap sport to be in.
I hope he got a jar of Vaseline with that bill, because he definitely got bent over on that one.
Shawn needs a shock🎉 collar to stop him from fondling himself.
Sorry for your trouble guys but respect to you for sticking with it and sharing all the lows.
Hope you guys get some good luck come your way 💪💪👍
Shawn it was good to talk to you at Rockingham Saturday night about all this. The offer is always there to help yall out in any way I can.
Hi Shawn I have a 98 Pete quad axel dump truck with a 3406E at 550 horse I bought it new I was the only one that drove it the third season I took it in for a tune up and they called me back after three hours and told me the cam was bad the lobes were Smearing and there was only a 175000 miles on it. It was auto warranty but luckily they paid for half of it. And it was $3200 got it back together. It was like brand new again i And it's still going strong to this day
I didn’t expect to be looking up what “in frame” meant on my third 187 customs video of the day when I woke up. Entertaining video for shit circumstance’s
Watched those guys tearing into the Pete and thought damn this isn’t going to end well. I get you with the organization tear down.
Can't say I blame you for not leaving your trailer! But Cat is the most expensive engine on the road to repair with Detroit and their preparatory software! You the man
Hate to see that happen to such a hard working person like you Shawn. your attitude is what makes you a champion no matter what your doing!
Shawn your handling your problems better than most people your age. I've watched you from the beginning and I have to say that when you and Chief split I was concerned that you might not succeed, since on the show you seemed to let Chief play the lead. But I'm really not surprised how successful you've turned out especially since you have one heck of a right hand man.
You guys need to listen to these Outlaw Couch Racers. They know more than everyone when’s it comes to racing, upkeep and financing.
Love you Murder Nova and phantom 405 and the NpkMurderNova
I’ve had the same problem with my Pete with cat engine. The wiring harness is definitely a problem when they get hot and brittle. I understand everything your going through with trailer hookups.
Welcome to the world of trucking with the patch together versus in frame.
With the supply chain you would be lucky ti have your parts in 2 weeks so I think your doing the right thing to get to work. Good luck
Welcome to big trucking. Most decent wrenches know where everything goes without more than a glance. It's a bit disconcerting if you aren't used to it but big trucks in that era are pretty dumb so no worries.
That spooling the car in Denver is crazy! Just a few bumps of nitrous into the turbsky! Golden!
He did that with the Og Nova street racing in Nebraska. I think he wasn't allowed doing it at npk something about the rules only allowing one power adder.
Hey guys every dog has its day stay consistent like you've been and you'll get your victories brotha. We're rooting for ya
You fixed all your problems bro you are doing great on everything your only problem is the tunning my friend you nailed it you’ll get better just might have to get one lots of people do
Love Little Pete this seems like a great ideal even if Big Pete never breaks again. I really hate that Shawn and Erin had to go through 8 days of hell on the side of the road. Thanks for all the videos Love the content. Good luck in Texas go hurt some feelings‼‼
Shawn. Just driving into this guys yard. I would have taken a look around pulled a U-turn and taken my chances on the next town. I would have paid a big rig hauler 5 thousand dollars to haul me there knowing that I am in a town with a real mechanic. Take a look around his yard. His work is exactly like his yard. It is a Pig sty. You said it all when it rained you got wet inside the shop.
Stash 5 to 10 grand in a savings account. One that works off a debit card . That way no matter where you are. You can have towed to a real shop.
I’m not doing an “I told you so”
Or you should have known.
Just make sure you have your towing cash stashed away.
Nice video thanks for sharing
If u get in a jam, get at gentry and sons trucking, they make shit happen and good folks. If you need help or info, anything, I can not imagine he wud not be helpful.. Best wishes Shawn, love the content!
God luck guys! Left handed ocd here, Listener455 here
According to my son who is a diesel mechanic the CAT engines don't like much over 1600 rpm's before they start breaking.
Love watching your life around your racing it is so exciting and interesting what goes on off the track and on you guys don't suger coat anything just real life sh-t keep it up 🤟
Happy birthday brotha!
We knew there was some kind of story like this coming regarding the Pete, dang it that was one sucky situation! Shawn always being real, as painful as it is to share to the world. 👍
Hilarious! I'm the same way now. Used to scream and yell and get upset. Now, I'm like... Whatever, don't get all stressed out yet!!! Maybe old age does that.
I love how real you guys are, will not quit attitude !! Go kick their teeth in, I'll be watching !!
Did they Check liner protrusion? If a liner drops just a little it will cause head gasket failure.
Any engine that needs to radiator pulled out to remove the camshaft to pull the heads is a big no no in my world, I'm a 60 series fan, but the old N14 is by far my favorite engine, with the three heads and easy accessibility you could change head gaskets on the side of the road, stay strong guys
Pretty awesome to always seeing the ups and downs of the real struggle in life, but also so sorry for the lose of being at that particular race that would really stink being along side the road for 8 Day's keep up the great racing Shawn and the Crew family as we well keep your head up.
Hi Shawn I'm a otr driver and had to take my truck to road side repair shops when that happens you are at their mercy both with cost and with there experience and knowledge of big rigs but the good thing is that the original builder of the motor has offered to help you have one of the best motors ever built in my opinion and the most expensive ones to good luck racing and be safe
Sorry to hear this happened to you just as the car problems are ironing themselves out. The way you work is exactly the way I work take things off and put them in order makes life so much easier when it comes to rebuilding 👍🏻
Damn Sorry to hear about that repair bill . Not much you can do when you're stuck in the middle of nowhere Keep pushing guys
Man that’s tough. Glad to see you are getting it all figured out. Good luck on the rest of the season
That's a nice looking peterbilt. Your not old Shawn you just have more responsibilities that you gotta deal with. Looks like you guys kinda figure that its just some of that rotten luck you have with the breakdown. It will get better for you all cause your always showing that positive attitude at situatons and you've had alot of hard times in between but you all get through it!! Gotta love it.. Good things are coming your way. Sometimes things happen for reasons not sure why, but they do. We just learn to carry on and call it a another lesson in life.
My heart goes out to you all. I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to leave your things behind.. Hell Im that way with my vehicle when I get it serviced.. I stay with my Biatch.. I don't trust anybody.. especially you with your tools, car and things.. That's your living. If people can't understand that then shame on them. People don't realize how much you guys live on the road to put on shows for the fans and even for the Discovery Channel. I hope you all are well compensated for all you do.
Glad to hear about the tax write offs.. Im with you all there Brother.. 😂 Hope Little Pete is not a repeat of Big Pete!! 😆 Well Thank You Phantom once again for the awesome updates.. Your dam good!! You all taken care and Stay Safe!! Love you all!!
If there is any fu**Kin one who deserves a W at the event it’s y’all man you guys bust your balls and put in the work I do believe you will get to where
You wanna be man I know I can relate to all the bullshit just happening non stop when doing everything you can the right way , gotta keep pushing 🤙✌️
Sorry to hear ask the bad luck. New truck looks great! Hope y'all kick ass
Shawn little secret of old school truckers. Next time u have some time hit up freightliner in Springfield Mo. have them check your tune I’ve been trucking since 1998 have run almost all engines from cats Detroits Cummins. To me it sounds like some one has tried to tune that c15 and didn’t do it right. The reason you go to freightliner in stead of peterbuilt in Springfield is Pete will load a factory tune back in it and that’s it freightliner will adj the tune and do it the way you want. Best of lick
Sorry for your break down glad to you got back up for next year
Sorry to hear that you got that quality of work. It really sucks that you have to do this guys work again.
When It Rains, It Pours!!!
Sorry To Hear About That!!!
Hopefully Your Luck Will Turn Around: Can't Wait To See When It Does!!!
Just Keep Pushing Forward!!!
Hello Shawn. Have you ever watched "Wheeler Dealers"? On the 1st episode of season 17 they rebuilt a 1995 Ford Escort RS Cosworth. The designer talked about how he tried to get the Ford to put 3 wing sort of things on the Escort but Ford only 2 instead of the 3. I feel like going on, but I would go on forever. You should see the episode for yourself. Really you need to watch it. Sincerely Yours Zach.
Large cars cost BIG $$$. A lot to go wrong. Supply and service air lines (red & blue) . Never a good time to break down. Good luck going forward, Live and learn.
Hey, Guys not sure if you know this or not but If you put a 10-speed auto in the 335 little Pete then the mileage will go up and you will be able to pull a 40k race trailer with it up, down, anywhere all you want.
Sorry to hear this. I drove trucks with cats and loved them till had to put injector harness’s twice. Second time took out 5 injectors so put in all 6 then the hpop took a crap and took out all the new injectors. Put 50k miles on it after repairs and guess what happened another hpop and another 6 injectors. Had issues with Cummins in the past but have a Detroit now 550k on it and love it so far
I love the get it done no matter what it takes. The repair shop looked a little less than optimal. But gotta do what it takes to get it done and get back on the road.
Love the Pete’s!! Can’t wait to see #MurderNova in the top of the points next year!!!
Great video 👍👍👍
It sucks to get your truck fixed on the road. I am a retired trucker, and they always add 25% to the prices at places like that. As they see a huge payday!!!!!!
Yep and they know you really have no choice but to pay it
Love to see the things you work through. Yes I can see it was a bad situation but it was the best option for the situation you where in I can see that. Keep up the good work
8:32 my 1st time seeing the actual size of those cams, they're huge!!
I hope that all this turns out well this off season
That truck repair place is located in Shiftyville AZ. Take the Bendover exit and hang a left ChuckUfarley Blvd. Look for the parking lot that looks it's been hit by a Tornado... that's us and your Wallet will feel like it got hit by Lightning when we're done.
Cat 6nz is the best engine ever made. Super durable but mileage is mileage and stress cracks in between the chambers is common. Cost 40k every million miles to do a full rebuild.
The best place to get heads is American premium castings, Vancouver, Washington. I have been a cat man for many years and yes, cracked heads or blown head gasket or a common problem usually because when people rebuild motors, they don’t set the sleeve protrusion correctly on each cylinder and of course they ordered the wrong spacer plate for said head gasket or protrusion. A lot of people forget to do the lower part of the sleeve protrusion also but under normal circumstances, there’s no beating a Caterpillar. They don’t get the best fuel economy, but my truck is like yours, not built for fuel economy
Hope you guys do good tomorrow later win or lose you guys are always still be my favorite murder buddy
Man I been in your shoes, we broke down 3 days in a row on Hot Rod Power Tour, we spent most of the days on side of the road and most nights in the hotel parking lot on jack stands. And we ain’t going to talk about the money 💸💸💸 hopefully truck makes it the rest of the season 👍🏻🙌🏼👊🏼🔧🔧🔧
Sean as a big fan of you , And as man like my self that have Driving truck for 30 year , That Peterbilt with that Cala pillar Motor is the man in the trucking world , By it Breaking down , That’s a part of the trucking game .... That truck and motor will out last any truck in the world my man , a 97 with a “ Cat “ Is the man ... no truck in world will out pull it or out last it , Out of Respect and love for you , Your set up is bad ass , Keep do your thing bro ......
It’s a common thing if that’s a c15 I’m a truck driver I love that motor cause it’s got great power when done wright
We have alot of Cat Engines, had a 1.3 megawatt gen set blow up right after taking readings,200 hours on it! The rod and piston ended up on the floor along with 30 gallons of oil and 200 gallons of coolant! Wish I could post the pics on here! We have had several failures of this type!
Been to the truck doctor before working for my old boss out of Cashion OK. He has a Pete that has a tag hitch. I’d like to get you in contact with him, great guy and could definitely lend a hand.
40:45 Shawn, I admire your empathy for this guy and that you didn't strangle him. 🤯 But seriously, if somebody takes on a job this big, hopelessly overworked, takes it apart like it's a lego set - then it all is not the reason but the symptom. His attitude towards working as a mechanic in general is just wrong. Maybe even his attitude as a person. Especially if he charges such an immense sum for it. If they had to be helped by a customer to find head-bolts and stuff - AND they're missing a timeline by days? I wouldn't even dare to charge 32K for it. Jesus. Diesel engines are high precision, high pressure work horses. you simply cannot wing this stuff.
They had you by the balls in the middle of nowhere. I feel or you, Phantom and the Pete. Keep going. Best wishes. you rock.
Love all the steady content lately
Trucker note for you, heres some quick easy math: a $200 part, costs $2000 in labor to install. A $2000 part costs $20k and so on. Semis aint cheap.
I have like three or four of them big diesel trucks and we generally run 2 to 300,000 miles put sleeves and him put new sleeves in him and drive another hundred thousand. Like you said you get it done right it’ll last you forever
hey shawn and phantom thanks for this vid i drove truck long haul for 20 years all over the usa and canada i would have done the same thing and stayed with my truck not only was it home but it was my life ... yes to do an inframe at that point made sence ..but i would have done the same as you did .. and trust me when i say i lay out my parts the same as you guys do so it all goes back the way it should and not looking around for stuff .. love the content guys please keep up the good work .. win or lose im always cheering for the muder nova and the 405 god bless .
I had a C16 Cat with a cracked liner and to rebuild the motor and it cost me $38,000
and 1 month to rebuild it. Redneck Diesel Repair in Wilmer TX south of Dallas is a great shop to work with.
Also done a night at kingman but my trek might have been a bit further than yours came from Perth western australia was a little bit different there hahaaha our motel had no pool
I made it to Steele,Al I bought merch but I didn't get to see you. They made us move from where we could see and couldn't find another spot. So we left early only got to see part of the 2nd round, we only left because I was in a wheelchair and like I said we couldn't find another spot where I could see! But us morons got to stick together! Love the channel and content! Phantom and Shawn y'all rock! Peace
I totally understand not leaving your stuff there you never know who your dealing with or who could recognize what is sitting there driving bye I would have done same rhing
187 Customs Shawn believe me I know what you mean, my dad was the same way. Everything had its place when he did things. So yeah it drove him nuts watching people work on his stuff
