Great presentation, Norman Chomsky and Bernie Sanders. Now, we need to vote for Mr. Bernie Sanders for President. There is no choice, we need this man in this office. Now, otherwise we are doom.
Oh, this really is a gem--peripherally for Bernie Sanders, primarily for Chomsky. Hard to believe this is from 30 years ago--most of it (maybe all of it) is as vital and as relevant now as it was then. I strongly recommend watching all of this--all two hours. For those with little time, at least watch the last eleven minutes--from apprx. 1:57:00 to where the tape ends at 2:08 or so. About eleven minutes--priceless.
Jamiethecommie what anarchists, and other far leftist/socialists of all stripes need to understand is that Bernie isn't going to run on a platform left of social democracy and/or social liberalism, but that doesn't mean he isn't an actual socialist. My understanding is he's somewhere between a libertarian socialist and democratic socialist, but that he doesn't legislate, or campaign as such. Imo that's a good thing. Left of social democracy isn't happening in this country anytime soon, in part bc to most people in this country, such a position is extremist far left. Granted, it's not far left, but that's just how far right our politics are skewed. I'm a man of two political positions, my ideal is libertarian socialism of some sort (in other words, that's my "in a perfect world" system), but my realistic position, bc right now my ideal just isn't realistic to expect or vote for (and we're nowhere near a revolution that could pull it off... and even then I'm more a gradualist - though I'm not sympathetic with Leninism ffs), is social liberalism or social democracy, bc that's the furthest left we're getting in the states any time soon. Let's face it: a social liberal system, akin to what the U.K. had post-WW2 and pre-neoliberal 80s, would practically be a socialist paradise in the US, compared to what we have now, or anything we've ever been close to in decades. The neoliberal nightmare is still running strong, and capitalism is pretty safe in it's fail-proof-bailouts-for-the-rich arms. Socialists/Anarchists/Leftists of all stripes need to face reality, accept this, and settle for less than an their *ideal* world, in exchange for a reasonable, further left (and actual left of center) than what he have now world. Let's at least get left of center, for the first time in somewhere around 50+ years, before we expect to get far left, and then work from there. As far as I'm concerned, that's the only option on the table. The means of production are off limits for a while, and frankly, we're lucky if we get them before technology/robots do.. ✌🏼

I feel like Chomsky lost some optimism after the Bush administration. What I found interesting was when he was talking about threats after the year 2000. To say Chomsky isn't accurate is disingenuous.
Simon Keel I think a serious critique of Chomsky-in other words, one that doesn't resort to accusations of factual inaccuracy-would be to criticize the way he characterizes certain things, as well as his emphasis. His contention is that since he lives in the United States, his concern should be, and is, documenting and criticizing the "violence" of the United States; you'll find that this position is absolutely unwavering. Furthermore, Prof. Chomsky does not believe, in effect, that states are legitimate entities; now that's a perfectly tenable position, but it's one with which I very strongly disagree, and it does, in my view, devalue some of his pronouncements, particularly some of the more categorical ones.
+Edward Ashton His contention is not merely that since he lives in the United States his focus should therefore be on documenting and criticising violence committed by the United States but that since the United States assumes the position of the moral beacon to the unstable world, and largely gets away with this fairly ridiculous pose while diminishing the possibilities of morality and chipping away at the stability of the world, a critique of that position is eminently more necessary and vital than a critique of the cartoonishly villainous enemies the U.S. sets itself against. That is to say that Chomsky is not especially interested in saying what goes without saying. This is why, if you actually look for it, you can find plenty of examples of him calling, for example, Saddam Hussein a "monster" and an evil man, but he's not especially interested in spending a career drawing wide-ranging over-arching critiques of overtly villainous mustachioed thugs, because everybody knows them and what they are about and why they are a bad thing. On the other hand, since even the most innocuous and factually verifiable contentions Chomsky makes provoke accusations of "anti-americanism" and/or lunacy, there's evidently much important work to be done, as far as discussing the things Chomsky chooses to discuss.
Edward Ashton Chomsky always makes a point of showing his readers that the United States is responsible for the same acts of violence that it likes to prosecute and accuse others of. I think you are majorly misinterpreting what he writes about. I don't know if you have read his books but I have read some chapters of Hegemony or Survival and Necessary Illusions: Thought Control in Democratic Societies. Chomsky isn't merely accusing the United States of being violent, he is pointing out the foreign policy on the United States is one of hypocrisy because the only time people dying is right in the eyes of our law is when it is by the hands of the United States, and you will see that is true if you look through our history of the last 40 years. It is hard to talk about Chomsky until you have actually read his literature because his ideas are very much grounded in fact and maybe to jingoist it doesn't seem right what he is saying, but he is very much a rational person and what he says is true, in terms of morality. It is impossible to find a mainstream news source that isn't biased. Mainstream media doesn't talk about what Chomsky talks about because if they did they would get cancelled. A hypocrite is someone who says "don't do that" and then turns around and does exactly what they told others not to do. That is precisely what the United States does.
Simon Keel I have read Chomsky, in fact, but I'm curious if you would clarify one point: you say "...very much grounded in fact and maybe to jingoist it doesn't seem right what he is saying," and I'm curious if the jingoist to whom you're referring is me. If so, I'd like to know why it is that you think that. (This is not passive-aggressive or anything of that sort; I'm genuinely curious, and if I've been expressing views that sound like jingoism, I'd like to know what they are.) As to your other points, I don't find much to disagree with on the merits. My critique is a more sweeping one, and Prof. Chomsky did, in fact, say at one point that he does not consider states to be legitimate. This was, I'm almost certain, in a debate/discussion with Michel Foucault that was held a long time ago, but it lives here on UA-cam. Foucault speaks in French, but I think there are subtitles; I don't remember if there are, but I'm pretty sure of it. It's a very high-level, conceptual kind of debate, and it was some time ago, but I don't see Chomsky as someone who would walk back a statement of that kind-and besides, it's a view that is pretty consistent with his views of a lifetime. None of this is to say that I don't consider Chomsky serious or anything like that, only that I disagree profoundly with his views on a lot of matters of foreign policy. Now I've babbled on long enough for one comment, but if you're interested in why it is that I disagree with Chomsky's point of view, I'd be happy to tell you. I don't necessarily disagree with a lot of what you've said about state violence and so on, though. My critique is just a bit more fine-grained that I might have made it seem in my earlier comment.

How is this the first time I've seen this video? Chompsky and Bernie are the best possible political duo.
Chomsky much older, but true
Seriously I thought I'd seen every Chomsky talk on UA-cam.
Great presentation, Norman Chomsky and Bernie Sanders. Now, we need to vote for Mr. Bernie Sanders for President. There is no choice, we need this man in this office. Now, otherwise we are doom.
8 years later… how did that whole voting for Bernie idea play out? Oh.
Oh, this really is a gem--peripherally for Bernie Sanders, primarily for Chomsky. Hard to believe this is from 30 years ago--most of it (maybe all of it) is as vital and as relevant now as it was then.
I strongly recommend watching all of this--all two hours. (Even that's not the end, but apparently they ran out of recording tape at 2 hours 8 minutes or so.)
For those with little time, at least watch the last eleven minutes--from apprx. 1:57:00 to where the tape ends at 2:08 or so. About eleven minutes--priceless.
I love that they have been old for my entire life. Love these two especially when together!!!!
18:13 When Chomksy and Bernie come together, even Jesus has to witness it.
Chilean citizen here, for me Noam Chomsky is the most brave and important man alive.
I know my anarchist comrades have their doubts about sanders but I feel that if he supports Noam Chomsky he understands the cause
Bernie is not one of us. Bernie is a millionaire, and now he's stopped criticizing millionaires, just billionaires. His books have sold enough to barely qualify him as a millionare for the first time in his life since he belongs to the poorest senators. The cost of the home is not even that high for the area, here in California a small 2bd home in a working class neighboorhood is like 400,000 average with no big patio or anything. He is not against millionares but the top tier elite who bleed out everyone else, dont pay their fair share are not fair with employees and control politics to keep benefiting themselves over sacrificing the ones on the bottom by burying deeper into debt, lack of opportunities, education, healthcare and so on. Bernie knew that he needed to stay in the Senate to keep working on turning the wh progressive so he started with the movenent that brought people like AOC and diverse progressives into the WH. He has never stopped working and is not about him but getting regular people involved and into the wh. In this speech he literally mentions that he developed the term from Bernays and Lippman... also any time he is asked about the writing of manufacturing consent he clearly says Herman wrote the portions of structure of the media and Chomsky focused in on the specific examples that test the analysis of the propaganda model filtering system, such as the comparison of the treatment of events in Cambodia and East Timor in the media.
You’re the only liar here...
Maduro deserves heavy criticism for various things but note that Bernie is basically where most Venezuelan people are, criticizing their government while also opposing US intervention. Bernie has been clear about opposing US intervention in the situation.

what a genious dr Chomsky is
holy shit
I feel like Chomsky lost some optimism after the Bush administration. What I found interesting was when he was talking about threats after the year 2000. To say Chomsky isn't accurate is disingenuous.
Simon Keel One will lose optimism as his life gets close to an end and you realize that nothing has changed
(This is not passive-aggressive or anything of that sort; I'm genuinely curious, and if I've been expressing views that sound like jingoism, I'd like to know what they are.)
As to your other points, I don't find much to disagree with on the merits.

How does one become a "Chomsky"?
-Critical Thought
-Use The Scientific Method in Everything
-Have MANY influences (Noam has like 40-50 different influences).
-Read the books of Wise men, not the bestsellers (Aristotle, Plato etc)
-Be yourself
-Rely on credible studies instead of what the news says.
PS: throw out labels. (View both your own side and the other side outside of the liberal/progressive/conservative/moderate label bubble and analyze and observe it as if you were an outsider).
And find your own way to critically analyze any situation.
See how the other sides think and why.
These won’t turn you into a Chomsky per say, but they’ll make you regain independence and freedom of thought.
