    • @TheBootyWrangler
      @TheBootyWrangler 8 місяців тому +2

@@MrBowser2012 the method begins with my wife uttering a magic phrase that goes something along the lines of “holy shit you waste so much god damned time sharpening your knives, do they always have to be dangerously sharp spend time with your family yada yada”
At that point the max horizontal travel of the stone without it passing over the tip of the blade is determined. Then I use my free hand as a horizontal “stop” for the stone while rapidly moving the stone left to right to left like a maniac. Wait until entire bevel has been touched and a burr has formed, flip knife, repeat process, go to next stone, flip again, repeat.
Edges seem to have fine durability as far as my use goes. My knives are almost entirely used in a work environment where abrasive edge resistance has a usefulness of next to none.
D2 is the perfect work knife steel imo. Hard enough to resist wear well. Tougher than a bucket of nails and can withstand immense impacts into hard surfaces without causing any catastrophic edge damage or severe rolling, and it’s stainless enough to be MORE than adequate for work knife use where you couldnt give a tenth of a shit about how pretty she is. Just needs to be able to be recovered for use after being left on a job site for a few days that’s really all you need.

His product is something that's been around fot ages, it's basically one side of a pull through sharpener or similar to a steel honing rod. To align an already sharp edge that maybe rolled over it would do that job although like you said there are much better options to choose from such as a strop, ceramic, or fine diamond hone that will actually work better and make the edge last longer by keeping those micro serrations in place. Pull through is the last thing I would want on any of my knives and I've been trying to get people to steer clear of them along with steel honing rods altogether by recommending a product that actually works. The worksharp guided field sharpener is great in the home as well as the field and wont break the bank, on top of it also being able too handle even kitchen knives or folding knives for maintenance. Still recommend a good set of stones for full sharpening of knives at home either guided system or free hand as it doesn't have an aggressive enough stone for reprofiling in my opinion, but you keep a knife going with it for a long time if no serious damage occurs. The carbide on the pull through sharpeners and this easy best sharpener do make for great ferro rod scrapers though for starting fires lol. Thanks for the great vid Jerad and keep making sharp things fun and enjoyable.

I think it's a good long-term investment, it's a professional brand recognized around the world.

Yours scratch pattern depends on how you angle your knife. The way you do it is great for cutting from heel to tip. But if you want the other way (a chef's knife maybe) you angle it the opposite way. Or do it straight and you'll have a perpendicular pattern that doesn't exceed at either, but does better than the heel to tip trying to cut tip to heel (hopefully you understand). I use all 3 strokes in burr minimization and finish with the pattern I want.

pull throughs are very situational they can be useful if u have matching angles meaning u have to use the pull through to profile it while its dull, i use them for cheap kitchen knives that i dont wanna waste hours on sharpening i reporifle their soft steel quick, most of the pull sharpeners are usually more acute/low degree angles.

I enjoyed watching your take on this subject. It is a bit of a hobby for me as well. Have you seen the Outdoors55 videos regarding "straightening an edge"? He has one about knife steels he goes into depth on the subject.
Also I can appreciate a toothy edge, and I will usually not sharpen a new knife if it has a good toothy edge (leatherman is good at those) until it gets nice and dull. I feel like its easier to get the burr to release on more of a polished edge, so when I end up with a razor sharp edge I think the toothiness kind of stops JUST shy of the actual apex, which doesn't really have any teeth left. Which you can see on a hair whittling edge under a microscope.
I think this tool does just what you said about deepening the edge issues and isn't a good tool. I left a comment on one of his videos telling him to do a microscope video, before and after he used his tool, but he pretty much declined.
A bench stone is to a proper knife edge, what a jack plane is to a nice flat peice of wood. Its like the difference of trying to sand a chair seat smooth with a dremel/sanding drum vs a sanding block. They both would smooth the surface to an extent, but one has a flattening/ refining effect, where the other just follows the issues without correcting them.
I have been wanting to do my own sharpening video, but it's just hard to find the time with work and kids. Anyhow, I enjoy your videos, keep em' coming sir.

I found a similar product (quite old 90's) in my parents kitchen drawer, comes from a Scandinavian country, which one? One of the S's from memory, had finger grooves for the angles, about 23ish and a ceramic whetstone on the flip side, actually gave some average kitchen knives a profile and edge that got through relative grade paper. And made a difference to a quite poor edge. But no more. Go the stone. See me at the next knife show with a pair of snowshoes yodelling. Enjoy the channel.

It is titanium carbide, which is harder than most steels, so yes it will sharpen when used correctly. Use only light pressure and consistent angle. Using a carbide bit for planers does works similar. I never use V pull through. However I find a simple ceramic honing rod is better and less likely to screw up the blade.

I got this thing too. Had exactly the same experience, the thing only works as a hone-strop, it doesnt work once you removed all the vertical scratches as it makes the knife slip on the material with the parallel scratch pattern. What I wonder is that the edge retention seems to work the best on knifes with scratch pattern that have been probably sharpened on belts, the owner has a video of him shaving bark of a tree with a buck 120 and it still slices paper after that. Would like to know your opinion on sharpening systems that produce edges with higher and deeper number of teeth such as the worksharp belt sharpener. In the end the carbide seems still pretty good on garden tools that have curves like pruning shears!

So, are you saying that stropping on an old leather belt, with no compound at all, is useless? I have never used a compound. I can get my knives hair shaving sharp, so I never felt the need to buy any. But I guess I need to try it some day to understand it’s value.
Edit: Actually, I’m lying. I have used something once. My mom is a jeweler, so she has polishing compounds, the green, white, and brown blocks that she puts on a buffer wheel to polish gold and silver. I used some of the green once on my strop, but I couldn’t tell if it did anything... Perhaps I’ll see a difference with a diamond emulsion...

I have had great success with these type of sharpeners. Takes practice! Hard stainless steels to soft high carbon can be sharpened but are very different in the feel using this type of carbon steel sharpener. I use it mostly as a field sharpener to get an edge back on a blade. As far as kitchen knives it works quick and can be used several times once you get the hang of it before going back to a stone. This does not replace the initial work you have to put into blade with stones but can get a quick edge back on fast when you need it. The angle and the pressure you use is key!! A simple leather strap after this tool works awesome. Again it takes practice but works when you learn how to use it. Having said that too much pressure WILL damage blade requiring more work to fix it. Remember this is high carbon steel that is used in lathes and milling machines so it has potential to remove a LOT of steel. I would bet that most people use too much pressure and ruin the Apex. My two cents worth from my experiences. I really like using them.

I stumbled across that dudes video's while i was looking up some sharpening tip video's. Amd the first video i seen was that one with the person who returned it and he really did come off sarcastic towards the guy's note. Anyway I watched a few more of hid vids and just knew it was a gimmick and I'm still learning sharpening. He also recommends those carbide pull through thing's that imo ruin you're blade edge. So that explains why his tool is carbide he clearly is one of those people who stand behind those pull through thing's and he tried creating a easier way too use carbide too sharpen imo. Because if you think about how this thing is meant too be used work's basically kinda similar too how those pull through carbide thing's work. I call them thing's because honestly in my opinion they aren't worthy of being called a sharpener. I get why you didn't dig into that man but he needs it so hopefully he reads some comments from people who see through his tricks in his video's like using already sharp knives and even having decoys in the crowd at shows too make people think wow that's really working. But in reality the person acting as a customer is handing him a sharp blade so his tapping up and down it real fast does nothing and he claims he sharpened it.

I taught myself to freehand sharpen on small diamond plates and finishing with just a few strokes on a ceramic rod or stone. I learned by doing something that i used to think i invented using sharpie on the bevel to make sure youre getting the right angle at first with a couple super light passes. Anyways nowadays I usually will still do that when sharpening a new blade but most that ive sharpened before it seems like i can tell by the sound and feel if im hitting it perfect. I think this could possibly work just like you said with super light passes to make a micro bevel. But if you're gonna do that then why not just use a fine diamond rod or ceramic rod ? Personally I'll just use what I have been using forever and am comfortable using.

Also I used to work in Lake and pond biology and management and I used to use something very similar to this to touch up the hand sickle we would use to cut down cattails under the water line. They would obviously get dull really quick but would come back easily with a few strokes with something like this. But those edge angles were so high. They would never cut paper like a knife. It was a completely different use.

I appreciate your attention to detail in this review. I have no dog in this fight and not pushing anyone's product. I watched several of the sharpens best videos and even watched several UA-camrs review this product with mostly positive results. Like you, the folks who do these reviews are very experienced and understand the process taking place. I wanted to buy one of his sharpeners but think they are a little on the expensive side. I found a similar product almost half the price at $13.00--made in America. It just does not have a blade profiler on it. I practiced on some yard tools that were in bad shape and the sharpener actually worked well. I moved on the doing my kitchen knives that were in so-so shape. I watched several vids and following the instructions, it did make my kitchen knives close to razor sharp. Again, it took me some practice to figure out how light, how hard and the angle to the carbide to use the sharpener. Once you get a feel of it, I think it works well. I do not have any expensive knives with extremely hard steel so I can't speak to that. I do want to reiterate, there is a technique and a "touch" required to used this type of sharpener and the one I have works very good. And for the record, I have a drawer with several sharpeners that I consider junk and defiantly do not work.

I nicked bones, may have drug the point through the dirt a time or seven, and deer hair is surprisingly brutal on edges. I was happy enough with the resulting refreshed edge. The tool is small and light and will strike the heck out of a ferro rod. I haven't tried shaving magnesium with it, but I expect it'll work in that role as well. This sharpener meets my purposes for a field touch-up. It will never be a (*insert your favorite honing system here*). I carry it on my keychain to put an edge back on utility knife blades at work. No, it won't turn your EDC into an eye surgery scalpel. It will do a better job than a pull-through, be it carbide or ceramic. It might help to think of it as a butcher's steel that can be made to remove stock. Just don't try to reprofile your skinner while your deer is cooling off. It will hone a blade a little better than using the top edge of your truck window, in the event that your game animal had the poor grace to die miles away from your vehicle.

At least get you a WorkSharp Field Sharpener. You can
refresh that knife a lot better in the same amount of time.
But keep the Sharpens Best to strike a ferro rod.

Speed and diameter. Diameter doesn’t matter if the speed is too slow for hydro shock. But combine the 2 and magic happens.

Jared is an idiot because he has absolutely no idea how to use my sharpener. He never even tried to learn. The man is an absolute fool, and I can prove it. Jared and I should get together in the same room at the same time with the video going let me show Jerry where the fool is.

@user-mi5nm4th7q jfyi that's not reprofiling the knife, check out my video on what pull through do to your edge, it's not a proper edge bevel made to be maintained, it's a micro bevel running the scratch pattern the opposite way you want

Thanks for that "classroom" lesson on this topic. At almost 74 years, I've been a cutlery lover, user & sharpener myself for decades & when I saw this product demonstrated, I came to the same conclusion. In my career of over 54 years in the "Mechanical Manufacturing & Design" field, board drafting, to 3D Solid Model CADD drafting, Machining, to Quality Assurance Management, I've been exposed to most of the alloyed metals, hybrid glass-filled polymers & ceramics that industry uses to make precision machined parts for components & assemblies. Machine shops have used tools like that as well as ceramic & diamond dust sharpening tools & grinding wheels for decades to fixture & hand touch-up cutting tools used in "CNC" Milling & Turning Machines to extend the tool life before having to purchase new high speed & carbide cutting inserts, endmills, drill bits, etc. I'm certainly not an expert, but, like you, I couldn't rationalize how that tool would work that well either. Thanks for spelling that scenario out in "layman's " terms for everyone of every level to more easily understand. Keep on keepin' on for the benefit of all.

"I couldn't rationalize how that tool would work that well either."
Well, it's very hard and thus abrasive to knife blade steels. And it's also very tough, so it will hold for a long time. At least that's what I'm thinking right meow. 😸

You certainly are not very smart and I think you had someone tell you the words to write to make it look like U had knoledge on the subject. All U wrote in your post and U can't see how it works like I use it. U don't know much about carbide inserts. And cutting metals. And your champion BS,er is dumber than U.
