The same people who say a truck should ride rough are the same ones who say a truck should not get good gas mileage. If all things are equal I will definitely take the good ride and great gas mileage!
The payload on any ram trim level above the rebel isn’t great. I don’t think any of them are over 1800 lbs. That being said, the average dude isn’t coming close to this, and anyone who does a lot of towing with heavy trailers probably has a load distributing hitch so it’s not eating up a ton of payload.
I've had Cummins powered trucks for 20 years and I sell them when they hit 500,000 miles and they all have made it there easily. I am actually interested in the Ecodiesel but the Ram interior is the best interior out of all 3. I rent trucks for trips about 5 times a year and have logged thousands of miles in Ford, Ram and Chevy and Ram by far is best. The ride between all 3 is still bested by Ram. I'm glad it still sounds a little bit like a diesel. It needs a DPF delete to sound like I like it. Going to testthe drive 1 this Saturday and then to test out the Chevy I6 diesel.
Watched your video. You have a very interesting configuration. Definitely not a work heavy version. Mine is a 21 Big Horn Eco. It was $20,000 less at just under $50. So no multifunction tailgate, no rambox, none of that slotted bedliner. 8in screen instead of 12 which only means that my air is all dials. But I do get 2,000lbs payload and 10,000lbs towing 33-gallon tank. 3.92 gear ration no locking rear diff. And with the stock wheels and tires(so far). I've been able to push my gas mileage to just under 28mpg flat highway at 70mph. My wife can get almost 30mpg (straight speed limit everywhere). So configuration matters, I feel like I'm getting maximum bang for my buck with mine.
For all of those that are unaware of why the payload is low on this particular trim: Not only is this truck heavily optioned(and air suspension models have lower payloads in general), this is more softly sprung off-road Rebel, thus lowering its payload rating. Look at a Raptor, Tundra TRD Pro, etc and they don't have huge capacities either. And most pick-up owners groceries and trips to the mall are the payload these days...soo...🙄
This is trade off for most RAM 1500's and 2500 models, not this severe but the average is lower than GM and Ford. I had a co-worker trade his RAM 2500 with the coil rear springs for a RAM 3500 with leaf rear springs because he ran out of payload to tow his fifth wheel RV camper. The GMC AT4 and Chevrolet Trail Boss do not suffer payload loss and they are just as capable if not more so as offroad trucks in this Rebels targeted segment. To get the ride quality they wanted RAM has opted for this tradeoff due to the coil springs/air ride setup weighing more than traditional rear leaf springs.
@@rlhmarines Trailboss/AT4 are definitely not "more capable" than a Ram Rebel, given that GMs G80 locker is not anywhere close in performance as the true locker on a Rebel. I do agree that the spring setup on Ram trucks concede high payload capacities in most trims, but lower trims are in the ballpark of most trucks. For instance, the MAX payload on a current GM half-ton truck is 2300 pounds, whereas Ram is 2200. Ford is claimed to be over 3000 on the rare as hens' teeth XL, 8ft bed, 3.3L V6. The same is true for the 2500 class, and Ram is generally very competitive in the 3500 class, particularly dually with the helper air-springs, which give unsurpassed towing confidence.(the truck will always be level).
This has been my criticism of ALL of the factory trim extreme off road trucks be it the Raptor, the TRX, Tacoma TRD PRO. They suffer reduced payload capacity to the point where you almost can’t take anything with you. He said this truck has 1,000 lb payload capacity. That’s worthless. Real world example: you’re going off road to go camping with three friends. You each weigh about 175 lbs. That’s 700 lbs right there. 33 gallons of gas at 7lbs a gallon is another 231lbs. Now you’ve at 931 lbs. so four guys are going to go off-road camping in a great off-road truck, and they only have enough payload capacity to carry 69 pounds worth of gear between the four of them? For the kind of money they charge for these trucks, particularly the TRX and the raptor, it would seem they could design a truck that is both off-road, capable and payload capable to take you to these off-road destinations with equipment that you need.
Lots of thoughts about these, a year in. But I'll just say - interior is well known and easily the best of them all. That paint! Whew FCA does great paint.
Agree with you 100 percent how smooth the truck is. For comparison, I tested Mercedes and it felt like an old truck (relative comparison) and Ram felt like a Mercedes 🤣. Ordering 3.0 this week.
I though all RAMs were built in Mexico, but apparently the 1500's are Made in USA. Very nice truck, hope it's reliable and will do 250,000 miles trouble free..
You're option list is missing the Shift On The Fly option because the 4wd knob doesn't show the 4 Auto mode. The Rebel needs a Torsen front diff, 10 speed trans, and 285/75R18 tires instead of the 275/70R18 tires. C'mon, it's a Rebel. If the Rebel was available in crew cab 6'4" bed that'd be a big plus.
Good they fitted a dipstick, in many modern cars it's an electronic device only. Wearing gloves you can always check the oil level and oil color. Hopefully they have a dipstick for the ATF too. Pricey truck, but compared to "premium" midsize SUVs it's still good value for money imo.
Awesome review Tim! That 70k price and 1000lb payload really hurt, totally prohibits a family of 4 going camping with their boat etc...At 57k (50k purchase price) and 1200lbs of payload Ill keep my Gladiator Rubicon.
1072 lbs of payload??? Are they kidding??? That means that you will have troubles towing anything more than 5500-6000 lbs, and that only if you don’t put anything on the bed and it’s just two not that big people in the cabin!!!!
The air suspension seems to be limiting the payload. Buyers really need to be aware of the payload sticker ratings to avoid easily overloading this truck.
im with you on the rambox with 6'4" bed. my guess is that it cuts download on payload capacity too much. especially if you have the crew cab with 6'4" bed. it was the same for last gen, they had it on the 2500/3500 and the bed was the same as the 1500 back then so it shouldn't have been an issue from a manufacturing standpoint.
I mean if you opt for the 6'4" bed then you are PORBABLY going to carry typical kinds of things like plywood, bundles of materials, large items, etc and RamBox would be the last thing a work truck owner would want as it drastically slims the bed capacity.
Ya can cruise smooth and comfy with the air suspension, pano, ram boxes & 12” screen and .... or you can have some payload on a Tradesman. It was a little worse in the previous GEN RAM1500, but the options DESTROY payload on the RAM1500, and RAM did NOTHING to have a higher GVWR version of the chassis to help. Drag.
When 2500/3500 has 10sp transmission for the Cummins, better choice for the money. The 1500 as viewed, one would think would be in the $50,000 ish range.
Anyone complaining about payload and heard the word eco and get disappointed should be mad at themselves not ram. Their are plenty of other trims for payload and you get the diesel still. This truck was made for style not actually using as a traditional truck. They were trying to tap into another market. People like me that didn't want to pay normal truck fuel up prices and will occasionally use the truck for minor moves. If you hear eco and think I'm gonna tow a house that's you not the makers fault.
Need more info in the air suspension bro, Every video done on these trucks with the air ride, basically shows what is does. know one ever talks about how it preforms, off road, towing, running empty etc. How are the components compare to the old style 4 corner air ride etc. thx
Ram/Jeep have an excellent air-suspension system. For one, it is a closed-loop system, which ensures moisture does not enter the system and cause component issues down the line. They've perfected it over the years.
I have an air suspension in my 2019 Rebel, it’s nice to be able to lift it when rock crawling, and lower it for loading / unloading heavy items. It doesn’t like cross winds on the highway however in comparison to the Ford F150 FX4 I had previously
I have a 2020 Ram Big Horn with the Ecodiesel. More basic, but comfort is phenomenal and fuel economy is great. But more importantly, since I tow a 6500lb Travel Trailer, my Ram has 1730lbs Payload Capacity. What's the point of having a high towing capacity if you have a very low payload capacity!
There is only one thing that sucks, and that is they don’t make the RAM box in 6.5 foot bed ): I Like RAM quite a bit over Ford and GM for allowing you to build a truck with options you want and what you don’t want, unlike the others.
My 2019 didn't come with rear seat-belt catches. The front inner fenders had to be replaced twice, the drivers side seat cushion had t be replaced, the bed had to be realigned because it caused the tailgate to not open, and then the heat shield fell off and wrapped around the drive shaft and can't be replaced because it took out the little nubs that held it on, all 4 of the door trim pieces had to be replaced and 2 have to be replaced again, and the Uconnect had froze my phone out for a week. Yea what a great product all this at 27000 miles.
I do not see how this truck can tow 12,000 lbs if about 10% will be transfered to the hitch... thats 1,200 lbs and the max weight is only 1,000 lbs... your overweight before adding the driver...
Regarding price 70.000$ is 57000 euro and with that money you can buy in Europe a Ford Ranger Raptor and you cannot compare the 2 trucks. In my opinion the 70.000$ is not bad .
The other thing is that here in the US we don’t pay sticker price for these trucks . Especially for FCA there are a lot of rebates and discounts . With a little bit of talking I highly doubt someone would pay more than 63k for this particular truck at 75k sticker price. Mine is a 2019 Big Horn 4x4 and sticker price was 48k and out the door I got it for 37k with friends and family discount only . So no one pays sticker price.
Incorrect, that truck is not rated for 12k towing. Ecodiesel in 2 wheel drive quad cab is the only one rated for 12k. The rebel is around 9k. Pull the Vin for that truck to confirm. Crew cabs are only 10k
Hell my 2019 didn't come with rear seat-belt catches. I think it would be good to maybe drive these off road trucks down a dirt road or something and compare it to other off road trucks and see how they compare. Ram rebel especially with air suspension, Z71, trailboss, FX4 etc.. good review tho Tim!
No 4wd auto is my biggest complaint for that price tag Tim. Even my lowly 2018 sport has that. I use it all the time in the winter effectively makes the truck like an AWD, you don't need to engage and disengage for corners like the 4x4 lock. You can leave it in 4x4 auto all winter long if you want. Surprised it's not a standard features on that thing with all those bells and whistles and fancy trim level.
@@terrencejones9817 Too bad frame paint isn't included, wax instead. If you live in a salty area better hope that doesn't flake off (which it's does). So there is that. Yes a bighorn with the level 2 equipment group has the auto, rebel is fancier trim level. Funny move by FCA.
@@kdcarver a WDH isn't going to increase your payload, and your tongue weight should be at least 10 percent. A 1075 max payload limits you at about 10750 towing capacity. Of course at a 10750 pound trailer weight you have no capacity left to put a person or cargo into the truck.
I was shopping for a new Ecodiesel to replace my 2016 Ecodiesel. I wanted the 6'4" bed and the crewcab. I have a quadcab, wanting more room. The sunroof is a waste of money and weight capacity. All I wanted was Ecodiesel, 3.92 ratio, crewcab, heated mirrors, 6'4" bed, 4wd, but prefered 4wd auto. And rubber floor mats! Only a moron wants carpets and 4wd. Makes for a dirty moldy truck. My old truck had a sticker of $40K. I would accept up to $48k stcker. But I bought an AWD Durango GT with the tow package. I will refurbish my old truck. My wife's 2018 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd is great for towing trailers with that big Cummins. But it is awful on icy roads. And empty, it has an awful ride on the Interstate. I would pay the price for an Ecodiesel Powerwagon. My old Ecodiesel has 157,000 miles. But the front suspension is worn out. And most of my driving is on the Interstate. Very little offroad travel. But it is gentle travel. Have Bilstein 5100 shocks. They are excellent.
Have you driven the non air suspension variants? I was looking at a laramie 5.7 drove one without air suspension felt great. Drove one with air suspension differ dealer and roads and it did not feel the best imo!
RAM always shoot themselves in the foot with the payload. It is a nice truck tho. But 70k you can get the Tremor for 74 last time I was at a Ford dealership.
Close to 80 grand out the lot! Made in Mexico using Chinese parts,so the profit on that truck got to be ginormous! Labor maybe 4grand,parts maybe 20 grand, misc. 5 grand, quick calculation 30 grand,so close to 200% markup!
Funny story. I was at the auto show when they revealed this truck a few years ago. Back then, they had those huge letters on the back of the truck that spelled out Ram, the graphics and all the Rebel badging everywhere. I said to my colleague, "a true Rebel would take all that crap off." I chuckled, he chuckled, the group around us chuckled and here we are years later with no more big RAM letters on the truck and an all-blacked out package. LOL.
I already own a '16 Ram 1500 4wd Ecodiesel 3.92 ratio. Awesome truck! This one is more refined. My wife has a '18 Ram 2500 Crewcab 4wd 6.7L 3.42 ratio. My wife's truck is a beast! My daughter and son-in-law have a '18 Ram 3500 Megacab 6.7L, 3.42 ratio. The Ultimate pickup is a Ram 2500 Crewcab Ecodiesel, 8-sp ZF, 4.10 or 4.56 ratio, 35" tires with King 2.5" dia remote reservoir shocks. A Ram 3500 Megacab with 4.56 ratio, and all the other specs would work too. Keep in mind a 1994 Dodge D250 with the 5.9L 12 valve Cummins had about 180hp and 400lb/ft torque. If Tim Conway and Bob Denver were reincarnated. Living near Scotts Bluff, NE. And reviewing vehicles. This would be their channel!
well I bought a laramie ecodiesel yesterday, will see how it will work. Previously owned 2017 Sierra 5.3 and it drove like crap, ram drives like a Mercedes.
payload numbers make no sense. 10% tongue of the tow rating is over the payload rating and you haven't even gotten in yet, lol. Tim, what's going on with the numbers here? This thing has a 1,000 lb payload rating before you even get in, but can tow 12K? huh? 4 good size guys and your over the payload without a single other thing in the truck?
@@RAM-KINGOFTRUCKS , I get that, then the tow rating should come down as well, unless that was wrong in the video, it said it was 12, 500 towing. you can't tow that much with a payload rating of 1,086 lbs, before you even get in. maybe Tim will clarify.
BB is right. I should have clarified that 12,500 is for Ram 1500 trucks overall - not specifically this truck. I did not, though, look up the specific number on this truck. According to Ram’s website, it is 9,750, but that’s incorrect as well since it lists the payload at 1,720. My educated guess is 9k lbs. like King if truck’s said, you really need to research your truck via the VIN for that. I apologize for the misinformation and will do better in the future.
Bitching about the price will get you no where. Compare comparable trucks across all manufacturers and you'll see they are very competitive price wise when comparing apples to apples. Build a comparatively equipped HD diesel truck with this one & you are looking north of $80,000.00 these days. They're crazy expensive for sure, but if you want to play the game, you have to pay the price of admission. Truck are the hottest thing going in the automotive industry and are selling like hot-cakes, even at these prices. The market demand is the driving factor for pricing, always has been & always will be.
@@Pickuptrucktalk Tim, Please don't take me wrong. 99% of what you said in this video was spot-on. I have a 2020 Ram longhorn ecodiesel loaded up with the air ride, so I can make the that statement. @@Pickuptrucktalk funny you should say that, I just went and looked and my wifes 2015 AWD Sienna, is 1100 lbs, lol. 12:02 your wife is smart. I mean it's your money and you're the one that's gonna be stuck with it for years to come so why wouldn't you make sure you're driving around in something powerful, reliable and comfortable?

Just bought a 2022 Ram Eco diesel runs great, plenty of power, 28 miles per gallon no 2nd doubts love it..!!
Really nice rear AC vents in the crew cab there. Far larger than competitors vents and they are actually directed at the passengers

Air suspension fails in cold places costs 1000's to fix.
Hell my 2019 didn't come with rear seat-belt catches.
What’s the best driving pickup in terms of steering precision and comfort ? (2022 tundra owner)
The truck's payload is close to 2K lbs with proper 10 ply tires.
I think it would be good to maybe drive these off road trucks down a dirt road or something and compare it to other off road trucks and see how they compare. Ram rebel especially with air suspension,
Z71, trailboss, FX4 etc.. good review tho Tim!
Now that would be awesome. Maybe once I get 100k subs I can do that.
I’m a big fan of 4wd auto. It just makes sense. Surprised it isn’t standard by now with all trucks.
No 4WD Auto on the Rebel; available elsewhere in the lineup.
All 2019+ GM trucks have 4WD auto. My Trail Boss included.
@@terrencejones9817 I'll take the Ram's true rear locker over 4WD "auto"...
70k for a truck. Just shows you 90% of truck buyers are for non work use.
Another great video, still like the Silverado better.
Hey Tim, what engine and do you like better Duramax or this? How about ride quality between AT4 and Rebel? Thanks
I like the 3.0L Duramax better for engine and the Rebel wins on ride quality. Not a huge difference on both though.
12560lbs but your 1000lb payload limits you well under that
Just use a distribution hitch and load your cargo correctly. Here's an example: www.etrailer.com/Weight-Distribution-Hitch/Blue-Ox/BLU59FR.html
@@kdcarver a WDH isn't going to increase your payload, and your tongue weight should be at least 10 percent. A 1075 max payload limits you at about 10750 towing capacity. Of course at a 10750 pound trailer weight you have no capacity left to put a person or cargo into the truck.
Damm Tim I'm liking you even more😁...great vid and now you no why I got rid of my piece of shit F-150 for a Limited Ram ..😁
Tim can you ban this guy from your channel thanks... signed everybody
@@bartekmedes8281 , it's just his opinion. He must have had a bad experience with F150.
Thanks for this comment. Too bad you couldn’t get what you wanted.
Cheap fuel price for diesel there. It’s at least a dollar more per gallon here.
2.99 for gas, 3.25 for diesel pg where I live
The real test " can it driver across the state of Texas on 1 tank of fuel?"
Have you driven the non air suspension variants? I was looking at a laramie 5.7 drove one without air suspension felt great. Drove one with air suspension differ dealer and roads and it did not feel the best imo!
I haven’t. All the ones I get use air suspension.
It looks practical and versatile. That's a good thing. The diesel means the engine should last a long time. Wow. Nebraska. You must really love corn 😂
LOL. Actually I don't eat much corn.
I dont like there no transmission dip stick either just like my 2012 Tacoma
Man new vehicles don't have a transmission dip stick. The synthetic oil is designed to last the life of the transmission.
1k on a 1/2 ton is too low. my midsize truck has just over 900lbs and I have to trade up because that isnt getting the job done.
RAM always shoot themselves in the foot with the payload. It is a nice truck tho. But 70k you can get the Tremor for 74 last time I was at a Ford dealership.
Ford also sells a $75k half-ton...
The rambox thing on a 6'4 bed is so stupid... they already make them for the Ram 2500, why not just fit them to the 1500?
Nice video👍👍👍

Thanks!
Close to 80 grand out the lot! Made in Mexico using Chinese parts,so the profit on that truck got to be ginormous! Labor maybe 4grand,parts maybe 20 grand, misc. 5 grand, quick calculation 30 grand,so close to 200% markup!
datrelle g they are built in Detroit actually. The heavy duties are built in Mexico but that production is shifting back to America as well.
Lol these trucks made in USA.do some work be4 u say something plz
I miss those gas prices!
If you need to check the oil when the engine is hot, why not just wear gloves?
Great idea IF you have gloves on you.
I wonder how long it will be before someone says Ram needs to ditch the Rebel name.
LOL.
ASAP, before the protests begin.
If you call it Rebel it should have the Confederate flag somewhere.
Thanks! That’s good company of men!
what kind of camera rig are you using
Either a GoPro Hero 8 or my iPhone 11.
$70,000 how is is regular person able to afford the payments on this thing??
well I bought a laramie ecodiesel yesterday, will see how it will work. Previously owned 2017 Sierra 5.3 and it drove like crap, ram drives like a Mercedes.
Congrats on the new truck!
So would you own one?
payload numbers make no sense.
It's a fully loaded vehicle..brings down payload considerably..
@@RAM-KINGOFTRUCKS , I get that, then the tow rating should come down as well, unless that was wrong in the video, it said it was 12, 500 towing. you can't tow that much with a payload rating of 1,086 lbs, before you even get in. maybe Tim will clarify.
@@breathingborla7695 you really need to look up your vin number on Rams site..it will tell you exactly the right payload for that ttuck
@@Pickuptrucktalk your excused Tim..🤣😁
Bitching about the price will get you no where. Compare comparable trucks across all manufacturers and you'll see they are very competitive price wise when comparing apples to apples. Build a comparatively equipped HD diesel truck with this one & you are looking north of $80,000.00 these days. They're crazy expensive for sure, but if you want to play the game, you have to pay the price of admission. Truck are the hottest thing going in the automotive industry and are selling like hot-cakes, even at these prices. The market demand is the driving factor for pricing, always has been & always will be.
Yep, that's why I took it out, but I put it back in for those who wanted to know my thoughts.
@@Pickuptrucktalk Tim, Please don't take me wrong. 99% of what you said in this video was spot-on. I have a 2020 Ram longhorn ecodiesel loaded up with the air ride, so I can make the that statement. I have skin in this game!! I love my eco longhorn!! I live in the Denver area & have the 3.92 gears in mine. The best MPG's I've recorded was 31.1 for all mountain driving. But overall my mileage is pretty much what you posted in the video. Thanks for what you do!!!
Payload is only 1K?
I thought that was kind of light myself. 1,310. Basically 4 guys and a cooler of beer.
@@Pickuptrucktalk 💀 💀 💀 💀
I only pay 2.17 per gallon for desil
Payload is terrible.
Then buy a bighorn ecodiesel then
The rebel is heavy, and this particular one is optioned out with some of the heaviest options (MFT, Ram boxes)
Less payload than a Ranger.
Less payload than a Toyota Sienna minivan!
@@Pickuptrucktalk funny you should say that, I just went and looked and my wifes 2015 AWD Sienna, is 1100 lbs, lol. Tim, are you sure this specific model is 12,500 towing? there is just no way with that low of payload before the driver even gets in. the standard for towing is 10% tongue and your way over the payload rating using that.
9:53 you can see the frame on the rear slider has the infamous “crack” on it.
Just saw this. Is it a common problem?
@@handykiddhe4778 yes. Mine had it with less than 5k miles on it.
Lease it and you're paying $35,000.
Payload is 4 big dudes
its sounds like the Izuzu dmax engine bro dafaq
12:02 your wife is smart. I mean it's your money and you're the one that's gonna be stuck with it for years to come so why wouldn't you make sure you're driving around in something powerful, reliable and comfortable?
