      Yup, because this interview was only right after the film so it was still fresh. Today, it's now different & he despises being associated with the movie after all the negative critiques it got for the next 2 decades after. And also had no control over later edits/cuts I just hope that he realizes today that his movie is now at cult status. So far the Spicediver +4k upscale edit seems to the best & closest to the book so far. I think Frank would have also been proud of the Spicediver cut.

      @@robwebnoid5763 I don't think he despises the film, rather he despises how he "sold out" and didn't have final cut. He often says there are aspects of Dune that he likes very much, it's just not the version he would have released. If anything I think he just regards Dune as being a lesson learned.

    I understand why people didn't like the movie, but I saw it when I was 14 (never having heard of the book) and fell in love with it. It still holds up to this day; it works as a film; and is a mindblowing cinematic experience.

    • @bravothreeninesixeight6663
      @bravothreeninesixeight6663 10 років тому +9

      It was a mind-blowing experience until I read the book! I saw the Lynch film, then the Harrison Syfy mini-series, and only then did I read the book! AND THAT WAS MIND BLOWING!! I read the entire book in about a 48 hour period, which is very unusual for me since I usually take my time reading. The scale of the book is such that I personally consider that the only way to truly represent the epic scale of the work is to do it as a TV series. The David Lynch film is visually beautiful but it ultimately fails to capture the complete intricate scale of Frank Herbert's genius. Upon having read the book, I felt as if I had been robbed; the film is practically a trailer to the book. You get absolutely no inkling as to the comprehensive size and detail of the Dune universe. IMHO Frank Herbert was a writer of genius comparable to Tolkien, perhaps even exceeding him since the substance of his work is much more relevant. To me it is an absolute tragedy that most people may not ever come to appreciate Herbert the way Tolkien is appreciated because no one has ever made a 3 part 9 hour cinematic trilogy out of his work. I was so disappointed when Peter Berg dropped out of the reboot project, until I saw 'Battleship'!

      Many others on the other hand blindly disregard this movie purely to jump on the bandwagon of agreeing with critics as they think it gives them some credibility (in that regard, these sheep don’t seem to have the capability/courage to form an opinion of their own).

He didn't want to have his creative control limited by that, but ironically he ended up losing creative control on Dune anyway. It's a shame because George could have been the perfect mentor he needed to translate his ideas into cinematic effects. Before Dune there were interesting sci-fi elements in Lynch's work, but after Dune he was traumatized and stayed away from sci-fi.

      Freenure Pretty much. Marvel / DC Comics and remakes of modern movies like Total Recall, Robocop, etc. it's complete intellectual laziness, cost-cutting, by Hollywood, using pre-written scripts / characters, and a cynical view of their viewing audience. I hate it. Prefer original writing like Tarantino etc. real script/plot writers.

    • @Freenure

      shades2 Paint-by-the-numbers scriptwriting, astronomical budgets half of which goes to marketing, predictable plots and sagas planned ten years in advance. Modern blockbusters (and maybe all blockbusters) are the equivalent of fast food: it's not nutritious but does away with hunger. Modern cinema (blockbusters, mind you) is not challenging, satisfactory or innovative. But it is entertaining, which is all that matters nowadays. Sorry for the tract.

      I think people forget that there were tons of terrible blockbusters back then. In fact, there were just as many back in the 90s and 80s as there are now. It's just that nobody talks about them, or even remembers them. Nobody talks about Streel with Shaq or the Highlander sequels(really Highlander in general) or the Robocop sequels or all thr random trash that Sylvester Stallone and Arnold what's his name were in. The 90s were particularly bad, way worse for mainstream cinema and otherwise than it is now.

They all did a great job, I love this movie start to finish. They've done a couple of adaptations in recent years and I have enjoyed them all, but given when this released and what they could do back then? This will always be my favorite. They were pioneers in the field.

I always loved the movie as it seemed to bring the book to life---thanks to David Lynch and his casting and creating his vision of the movie. I can see where it would be difficult for anyone who had not read the book. I especially like his treatment of bending time and space the worms the "see-ers" the spice and all of it.

    David Lynch I think climbed into my head before making Dune. Every one of the scenes in the first 45 minutes was absolutely exactly how I had pictured it. Even if something happened toward the left or right, that was how it was in my head. Watching the movie was an eerie experience for me, until finally one of the scenes broke with my brain. David Lynch was amazingly faithful to the book. It is perhaps the best Sci-Fi book in our history so far, and it deserved the fidelity Lynch brought to it.

      @@AtticTapes14 Not from this sci-fi fan's perspective. Dune inhabits a MUCH richer universe. I consider Dune to be the sci-fi equivalent of LotR because both authors created massive worlds with backstories and volumes of notes that never made it into the actual books, but created a depth to the stories that you just don't find in Star Wars. Herbert was a mad genius and so is Lynch.

    My mom was/is a Frank Herbert fan and when she went to see this in the theater she of course noticed how off course it was, but she absolutely loved the film for its own sake. And I will never forget the first time I saw this as a 4 year old and how I'd remember certain scenes when I was in bed. Especially when the Baron Harkonnen pulled the delicate dandy slave boy's heart plug out and practically blew a load while pushing up on the dying kid.
    Despite all the reasons fans of the book, film critics and Mr. Lynch shat upon Dune it's fantastic, strange and very dreamy. One of my all time favorites.

    One of my all-time Favourite Directors and 'Dune' is one of my all-time Favourite Films. His experimentalism and "fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants" style is something I've subconsciously tried to mimic in my own work. Not having read the books nor having a desire to do so I find the Film accessible enough to draw you in and hold you to the nail biting end, and bring you constantly coming back for more. That is the true sign of a Great Filmmaker and equally Great Film, to always bring you back for never ending repeat viewings !!
