Overall, a fantastic game that definitely lives up to the hype, that and having one of the few fanbases I can totally get behind and be amazed by the awesome stuff they do.

This game is definitely worthy of the hype in my opinion. I ran through it murdering everything in sight on my first playthrough and then it made me feel so guilty at the end that I actually played through it again and spared absolutely everything to "do the right thing" lol. I've never experienced that with a video game before... Ever. Really tugs on the heartstrings.
"The fanbase is bad, That makes the game bad" Smh anyone who feels that type of way about anything should reevaluate their life. But games like undertale do fine without super great graphics. And what do you mean by battle? What RPG games have you played that use a Bullet Hell battle system?
+AngryNerds100 The irony of that statement is that IGN probably wouldn't have made this video review if the game didn't become as popular as it is right now.
I was one of those people hating on Undertale before playing it. I've finally played it and it's fantastic! Give it a try. You'll be pleasantly surprised
+Mister__Meow I guess...it's so good that the pros overcome the flaws...similar to their MGS5 review...But yeah, if you still have a complaint, the score should go down a little lower. Just a little. Even a "9.9" would make a bit more sense.
+Mister__Meow I think the point is that it's not pretty on purpose (1:35). Not sure why she didn't say that, but that's what i was thinking while watching.
When I first played this game, I thought to myself that this wasn't a game. It's just pure art: the story moves people, while it's just very simple. The game plays with your own emotions in such a way I've never experienced before. This game deserves it's 10!
Totally deserves a 10. It shines all the way through, it surely benefitted from being made by just one guy (basically) with a clear vision of what the game should be. Goes straight to the top 10 games of all time, imo.
+sonicadv27 I always found something wrong with people naming a game as the "top game of all time". That would imply nothing can surpass it. And that's always wrong. Honestly, Undertale hasn't really done anything that revolutionary that other titles haven't done better. Also, being made by one guy isn't really that spectacular anymore. It's commendable, but it doesn't really matter much if the game turns out crap.
-Amazing story that, honestly, gave me goosebumps. -Strange characters that you learn to love very quickly. -Not very demanding graphics, which means you don't need an absolute beast to play it. -Masterpiece of a soundtrack. -Different ways to play it, which will make you replay it over and over again. -Many, many secrets that you really have to *look* for to find. *I just can't see anything wrong with this game*
This game is really special. Those hating haven't played it, because they can't allow spoildselves to play a game that looks so bad. Their loss. 10/10 game.
+Golden Meerkat That's a dead give away to part of the problem right there as to how long you played. Everyone has their own interests though, no game really ever will be for everyone.
+JayPG dude dont answer a question with another question thats just annoying, and i would give it a 10 because i literally see no cons with it, the game was beautifully created and the entire time playing the game i had a smile on my face, also the way that the game makes u feel that u are literally destroying a world or saving one is something very hard to find these days
Having a 10 doesn't mean it's game of the year Witcher 3 had several bugs at launch giving that score but it's still my GOTY and now a 10 after they fixed them Kinda similar to how skyrim being a masterpiece yet had bugs preventing it from getting a 10 I liked Witcher 3 more than undertake but both of them are undeniably what made 2015 a strong year in gaming for me mgs v dissaponted me in story
But still the game was amazing, best game of all time? Nooooo, but it's certainly one of the best games of 2015, with the witcher 3, MGS 5, and Batman: Arkham knight
+Der Krazy Kraut The gameplay is what got me to buy it instead of just rushing a let's play personally. I loved it and I'm surprised I liked the gameplay as much as I did since I don't like bullet hell games. Maybe its that they are done in little bursts? I dunno but I can totally see why many people wouldn't care for it.
Back when this review came out i was all wtf like a lot of others but i just got and completed the game and its one of the best games ive ever played, it deserved the score.
To everyone complaining about the rating: IGN ISNT YOU! If you like the game, that’s fine. If you don’t like the game, that’s fine. Don’t let some corporation dictate how you feel about something
Because the graphics can work especially in large boss battles in which it switches the dynamics completely, it can also be charming at times. Also keep in mind everything in the game was made by one guy (with the exception of things like special character designs and ideas) so it's not gonna have amazing graphics.
Jeez,I thought Undertale fans were bad. This video's comment section has taught me that its anti-fans and haters are even worse. And for some reason, they all decided to gather here. Calling the game overrated simply because they don't understand the depth or complexity of the story and the game itself. And that's just scratching the surface of these hate comments. This comment section is proof to the harsh reality that there will always be someone who hates your work regardless of how critically or widely acclaimed it is.
I don't necessarily thinks it's the haters. People (IGN comment section) generally don't seem to understand how a review is made and that the person reviewing it has an opinion just like every other human being and as opinions go... Well they differ. And that's what always seems to make the haters look worse imo. Most people here instead of saying why they disliked/liked it all I see are "more like an X/10" without any background as why they would rate it that score.
LOL. I don't know what's better. Getting upset over people calling this game overrated, brainlessly saying that they "just don't understand it," writing that last sentence like creators are going to get their feelings hurt by someone not liking their game, or the overall arrogance required to write this comment.
>female reviewer >oh no this is already going to be ba-- >UNDERTALE IS SO GOOD, ITS AMAZING, ITS SO FUNNEH XD >10/10, on par with games like Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid IGN is so biased these days. But hey, pays the bills right? Gaming is dead.
Should have been a 9.8 or something - A game doesn't need good graphics to be good, but I think it needs decent graphics (for the time period) to be considered PERFECT ...
+Dominic Samaroo Undertale's graphics are very intentional, because the game sports wonderful visuals when it wants to get a point across about something. The jarring overworld graphics make those moments stick out all the more, it's just really smart.
+Umar Bajwa The tedious part is hunting down and murdering every single creature, which if you attempted in real life, would be a very tedious activity, as numbers thin it's harder to find your next target, it's intentional. And the graphics are intentional, it's designed to be reminiscent of games like Earthbound to lure you into lowering your expectations and to expect a regular old RPG, and likewise the game does have a few intense and one big _very detailed_ part.
I've played games that have moved me (Journey, Persona 4, the Last of Us) but no game has ever managed to make me breakdown into tears in my life. The final battle (true ending) is one of the most powerful moments in videotapes, and doesn't go the route of "character x that you like so much dies tragically" it does something much more clever and well executed. Fantastic job Toby Fox and Temmie Chang.
The only reason any fanbase gets bashed is because only the fans that freak out on the internet in response to haters or critics are the ones who anyone actually notices.
Why is everyone believing this review because it gave a good score, but when the other IGN reviews give bad scores that's when IGN doesn't count. Hypocrites.
I'll give this game a 8.5/10 at most. This was a GOOD game, not really a true "MASTERPIECE". Undertale is that one game with great music and story but it tends to get a bit old in my opinion. Undertale is a quick game that can be finished in a day or two but it still is a nice "story". Undertale is more like a story than a book. Short but nice, 8.5/10.
You gotta give big props to Toby (and Temmie for some of the art I can't spell for crap sorry) for doing this whole game on his own. That takes real dedication and shows how much that he loves doing what he did/done. Having to do even all of the amazing music by himself is astonishing, and I give great respect to him for doing it so well.
Undertale a game that has actual story, characters with feelings that you'll grow attach to, and deciding to whether to kill or spare monsters.....meh not my taste
+Iluvatar Erú People who care about the gaming medium as an art form and actually care about games, care about what feelings a game can elicit in a player. That's what transends the medium from toys to art.
This is, truly, one of the greatest video games (of any kind) ever created. And i stand firm with that statement, if you disagree, good for you. But personally, this is one of my top 3 or even 2 games of all time.
10/10 is quite the thing to say especially considering The Witcher 3 for a 9.3. Listen, I know people are going to make the stupid comparisons between the two and say Undertale shouldn't have gotten this score. You can't compare them. They're completely different games in a ridiculous amount of ways. Thus they aren't being judged by the same standards. That's why Undertale can get a better score but don't assume it means it is any better than other games they've reviewed. It's mostly arbitrary to me. That is the issue with scoring games because people take it with such face value that they wont even bother to think about what that really means. Should Undertale have gotten a 10/10? I don't know. Personally, I expected 9.5 at the most. But whatever, if IGN wants to give a 10/10, that's fine. It wont ruin my day. It's pretty niche stuff so I'm not surprised if people wont see how it got a high score.
I admit, i love a great Story but at the same time i also expect my games to look decent..I mean, whats the point of keeping up with technology and having a great gaming rig if i play something which looks like it is 20-30 years old.. I would have given it a 9/10 , the graphics being the reason why its not 10/10. Anyway, its my opinion only, not forcing it onto others, does anyone agree?
Toby made it graphically like this for the charm of the character, enemies while being accompanied by amazing ost just like earthbound the game it was based on
+Phoenix917364 It was programmed by one guy and a majority of the art was made by the same guy and one other person (and all the music was made by him as well), a 3D full-res game would be much harder to program (and would take even longer than 2 years to make), and it also wouldn't be accessible to everyone as not everyone has a "great gaming rig". Undertale was made with everyone in mind, newcomers to experts, men and women, etcetera.
'Ugly'- 10/10 What a stupid review! Graphics aren't everything but they are something. If you think a game has 'visual limitations' why give it a perfect score? And if you don't think the graphics are a problem why did you bring them up?
Undertale has very repetitive gameplay. Not that interesting despite the popularity... all it is, you walk to a certain area, do a puzzle, talk to someone, dodge and then rinse and repeat. People give this game too much praise over it's repetition. Therefore I think people like this game just because it's popular and their friends or a favorite UA-camr started playing it and wanted to be part of the hype. It's repetitive crap. And the main character is poorly designed and adds to the dullness. (Just an opinion, please don't hate. Just tell me why you disagree if you don't)
Chicken Permission Most other games have you: Talk to someone, stealth, shoot. With far less to do. Most games have combat and occasional talking while Undertale has combat with loads of different enemys with multiple attack and each enemy has different attacks and a different way to spare them. The puzzles are unique and diverse and the characters are very different and the conversations are great. I think Undertale is the least repetitive game I've ever played.
+Methose Xemas This game does have random humor, but I feel it balances it well with the well set up jokes that make sense. (Also puns, which have always found to be my weak point).
I'm not a Undertale crazy fanboy, but I agree with the with the score, this industry have one lesson or two to take note from Undertale. The game is not perfect, far from it, but pun intended Undertale is a game changer title for gaming.
+ Control over Undertale's world. Every action you do in this game affects the game's characters, dialogue, story, and endings. Giving you a sense of being important. + It's charming. This is something that I believe hooks a lot of players. This goes for the game's: characters, music, funny attention to detail, and the game being self-aware that it's a video game (this also makes up a great deal of this game's focus) +Characters. They're simple with a nice amount of depth with character traits that aren't overdone (unlike what the fans portray them to be, but that's just me), but is done just right. +Fighting mechanics. Throughout the game, you will be met with enemies with different attack patterns. Keeping the game fresh and challenging. A big factor to keep you interested in playing the game. It's not repetitive. +Replayability. The game is cleverly made to give you a reason to replay. Usually for plot or to unlock secrets. The game also doesn't stretch itself too thin; making replaying the game worth the trip. - Art. Players are forced to look at it. Though not a large reason to not like it, it can affect the experience. The other aspects DO make up for this. I'll stop here and just say THIS GAME IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. It seems to cater to people who are into RPGs and beyond. It does a lot of things right, but people will find things that everyone else overlooks that they think make it not good. I would give it a rough 8.5/10.
I would rather play titles like this than majority of games today. Prime example games. 1.Undertale 2.Don't Starve 3.Risk of Rain 4.Organ Trail 5.Lone Survivor Dc 6.Steamworld Dig 7.Shovel Knight These games have soul heart and character unlike the massively oversaturated market of Exclusives & Franchises.
Undertale is an objectively good game. There's not subjectivity involved. If you think it's bad, you lack a sense of humor, and can't follow a narrative well enough to appreciate the game, seemingly. This game has more attention to detail than 90% of triple A titles I play on a yearly basis.
The game is a good game and all, but it does not deserve a perfect score, I would have given it an 8.5 out of 10 or something like that, never a perfect 10.
+Tiago Macedo Well I didn't really like the characters much, I found the gameplay to be a good attempt at a new gameplay style for an RPG but not exactly revolutionary, and the only parts of the game that really grasped my interest were the parts near the end of the numerous endings.
+Ness Alt #2 Well, I suppose everyone has their opinion, I personally loved the characters, from the goofy Papyrus to Flowey, that little psycho. For me it is a solid 10/10, regardless of what the others might say.
I feel like this not fair. They gave it the game of the year then reviewed it. So there was an expectation before the review to perfect score it. I love undertale, but I say it is a 8-9. The story is short even when there are many paths to take. If you are one for more violence then you'll hate this game as it gives you feels for doing so. I'm just glad there isn't gonna be 4 games in one year with a purely 10 year old fan base. *cough* fnaf *cough*
+HRPrimeGaming This game took 11 hours to complete True Pacifist run... And MANNY OBJECTS ARE USED ONCE. Every room is almost with new objects, almost without stereotypes!
Personally only really like the soundtrack, other than that I think the game is a rather standard rpg with one thing that sets it aside from others. The community shouts at you for doing "the wrong path" making the game feel like it has one face, and that is killing nothing.
@@undertaleislife7210 diffrent strokes for different folks. even its not my type of game it is honestly better than most games nowadays. a solid 7.5/10 for me
so you give little nightmares an 8.8 when little nightmares is far better in design and horror, undertale falls flat on its face when you compare it to earthbound, and you give that a perfect 10?
The windwaker didn't even get a 10..... really? You're trying to say this game is only the same level as ocarina of time, gta 5, Mario Odyssey, and is even higher than both Mario galaxies
"I hate Undertale" "Why do you hate it? "The fan base is terrible, it's so irritating knowing that there are bad people out there playing the game, having no negative effects on me, and acting like literally *every other **_fanbase_*
+宇柏 Probably because Undertale got a higher rating, i could go into details but the new genres of gamers are approaching to hate on me and i must make haste...farewell :/

undertale is what i think games SHOULD be, an interaction, a story of choices, an EXPERIENCE. something that can't exist in other mediums. something that interacts with you and rewards you for interacting with it. there are many ways to make video-games, many ways to create things in any medium, but for games i feel that the best way is to interact with the player directly, make them feel emotions, make mechanics part of the story, and use the fact that games are interactive in a way that is fun and interesting. things like COD and Battlefield are good for what they are, but they aren't as good as they could potentially be, those games are impersonal and cold, they may be made to appeal to any audience but none of those audiences will have as much fun as they would with something specifically tailored for them, something like that feels more personal, like the creator had decided from the start that they wanted to make something that those specific types of players could interact with and interact with them. games like undertale feel much more open to their specific audiences because of things like this.
this game and shovel knight are perfect examples that a game doesn't need a million dollar budget to be a fantastic game :)

Makes you wonder how EarthBound would've been treated if it was originally released now instead of the 1990s
Not the same, I liked undertale's gameplay more than earthbound because you were more involved.

I'm pretty sure that Undertale itself was a shitty attempt at appealing to hipsters.
So just because the game is popular, the review gets bashed?
yes.

You said that art is flat out ugly, and then in the score you said it had no cons! Gg ign
it's kind if the point of some of the characters.
+Kylo Ren not the entire game
Mohamed Hijazi she said SOME OF IT is, as in a few characters.
Why did this come out now? This game came out months ago...
+darkraio That's what happpens with a Console centric channel.
+darkraio why would they put up a video review of one indie game and not the rest if they didn't know it has a fanbase
because on their ign pc game of the year video when people where stating how they made undertale their pc goty but didnt even review it
svnseto ! Oh ok then
Because the game wasn't popular at that time ....this is IGN
Totally deserves a 10. It shines all the way through, it surely benefitted from being made by just one guy (basically) with a clear vision of what the game should be.
Goes straight to the top 10 games of all time, imo.
sonicadv27 totally agree.
It's commendable, but it doesn't really matter much if the game turns out crap.
sonicadv27 meh, it gets a 5/10 too repetitive and has many flaws
Hey! Don't hate the game just because of the fandom!
Aly Ahmed Why are you assuming that's why we are disliking it? It just isn't amazing.
@Zhou Jiang OK tell me
@Zhou Jiang that's your opinion dude
Everyone has his own opinion
@Zhou Jiang Why does the fandom ruin the gameplay for you ?
@Zhou Jiang easy you can enjoy the game and in the same time don't be in the fandom
This game is really special. Those hating haven't played it, because they can't allow spoildselves to play a game that looks so bad. Their loss. 10/10 game.
+Edvardas N I've played it and it was boring af I could only play an hour or two before I gave up. Not 10/10 worthy.
+Golden Meerkat That's a dead give away to part of the problem right there as to how long you played. Everyone has their own interests though, no game really ever will be for everyone.
Nin Shade Ok I'll check it out
I haven't played the game, but I do like it
+Golden Meerkat check out projared's lets play
10? Really?? I like the game, but a ten? Damn
+a7xweeman whats wrong with that?
+a7xweeman I'd give it a 7.5
JayPG wait why would u give it a 7.5 tell me the cons of it
Greatfunnies Why would you give it a 10?
+JayPG dude dont answer a question with another question thats just annoying, and i would give it a 10 because i literally see no cons with it, the game was beautifully created and the entire time playing the game i had a smile on my face, also the way that the game makes u feel that u are literally destroying a world or saving one is something very hard to find these days

Judging a game by its fanbase is probably the stupidest reason to judge a game.
Wow, I've never seen a game 10/10. Gotta get it

Meta gear solid 4
Grand theft auto V
Grand theft auto IV
Zelda ocarina of time
Zelda skyward sword

Never heard of a thing called Mario?Mario Galaxy?That got a perfect 10
Last of us did too.
Ummm a 10? I mean this game-- well yeah it was an amazing experience, and I got the feels and all that. But the gameplay is nothing special.
Did you play the game?
But still the game was amazing, best game of all time? Nooooo, but it's certainly one of the best games of 2015, with the witcher 3, MGS 5, and Batman: Arkham knight
+Der Krazy Kraut The gameplay is what got me to buy it instead of just rushing a let's play personally. I loved it and I'm surprised I liked the gameplay as much as I did since I don't like bullet hell games. Maybe its that they are done in little bursts? I dunno but I can totally see why many people wouldn't care for it.
Actually it's a brand new take on RPG and people who have important names in the game industry say this is one of those revolutionary type of games
xjustbecuzx who are these people? Important names? Game industry? C'mon dude that's like an argument of a 10 year old.
What IGN scored these two role-playing games.
Fallout: New Vegas: 8.5
Undertale: 10
New Vegas is a true RPG masterpiece in my opinion.
Jacob Herlihy Why does someone keep flagging replies...
I love NV too, but it's riddled with bugs and contains a poorly designed and boring world.
Damon Llopiz The world is supposed to be a wasteland.
***** that's a poor excuse for an uninteresting world. 3 and 4 were wastelands too but they were far more interesting and well designed.
Damon Llopiz Isn't a wasteland supposed to not have much? There were still buildings and such in New Vegas.
Omg 10/10
Brings a tear to my eye :')
What kind of review is this?
It deserves an 11 for going above and beyond
Back when this review came out i was all wtf like a lot of others but i just got and completed the game and its one of the best games ive ever played, it deserved the score.
To everyone complaining about the rating: IGN ISNT YOU! If you like the game, that’s fine. If you don’t like the game, that’s fine. Don’t let some corporation dictate how you feel about something
You mentioned that the graphics were bad but you still didn't put it in the cons list.
+John Hunter have you seen any other IGN reviews
if it doesn't get an entire section talking about it, then its not on the cons list
+ZSXDFV 2 I mean the review WAS only 2 and a half minutes long...
Because the graphics can work especially in large boss battles in which it switches the dynamics completely, it can also be charming at times. Also keep in mind everything in the game was made by one guy (with the exception of things like special character designs and ideas) so it's not gonna have amazing graphics.
+SirOakRoots And that's why it doesn't deserve 10/10
+SirOakRoots You say "it's made by one guy, so it will have flaws" and then you go and say it's perfect.
The ending of this game molested my heart. I loved it
what
See now that is the perfect amount of water.
Getting upset over people calling this game overrated, brainlessly saying that they "just don't understand it," writing that last sentence like creators are going to get their feelings hurt by someone not liking their game, or the overall arrogance required to write this comment.
>female reviewer
>oh no this is already going to be ba--
>UNDERTALE IS SO GOOD, ITS AMAZING, ITS SO FUNNEH XD
>10/10, on par with games like Ocarina of Time and Metal Gear Solid
IGN is so biased these days. But hey, pays the bills right? Gaming is dead.
Undertale deserve that score, but the review Was shitty
+Rena Ryugu i'm surprise she hasn't said how "progressive" it was
+Rena Ryugu
What does the fact the reviewer is female have to do with anything?
+Yamimidna He's probably scared of girls. Lucky for him, girls don't wanna talk to him anyway.
Alright, off to Steam I go.
Bret Reed it was worth it i bet
Was it worth it
Undertale Has The Best Music, Story Line, And It Doesnt Care About Graphics, And Thats Why Its..... Beautiful.
Should have been a 9.8 or something - A game doesn't need good graphics to be good, but I think it needs decent graphics (for the time period) to be considered PERFECT ...
Graphics don't make the game. It's the gameplay.
+Dominic Samaroo Undertale's graphics are very intentional, because the game sports wonderful visuals when it wants to get a point across about something. The jarring overworld graphics make those moments stick out all the more, it's just really smart.
thts dem throwback graphics boi
the game is $5
the game is $5
"There's tedious parts and the game is ugly. It's a 10/10." Ok.
I know 10 doesn't mean 'Perfect' but I'm sorry if a game's design isn't flawless and it's downright ugly it can't be a 10
+Umar Bajwa The tedious part is hunting down and murdering every single creature, which if you attempted in real life, would be a very tedious activity, as numbers thin it's harder to find your next target, it's intentional. And the graphics are intentional, it's designed to be reminiscent of games like Earthbound to lure you into lowering your expectations and to expect a regular old RPG, and likewise the game does have a few intense and one big _very detailed_ part.
+Umar Bajwa She said that she didn't even mind the tedious parts
+Umar Bajwa Probably reaching for criticism. :/
+Umar Bajwa Take a look at the reviews posted in the description of undertale on steam. You might find a pattern.
Fantastic job Toby Fox and Temmie Chang.
spell check changed video games to video tapes in your comment....also I agree.
every time i think of this game i get nostalgic. seriously one of my favourite games of all time

10/10 game. One of my top 3 favorite games of all time.
Game:11/10

Wow. Can't believe they got this review out so fast
I better not hear a single word saying that Undertale did not deserve this score
Zhou Jiang agreed.
Undertale did not deserve this score.
The only reason any fanbase gets bashed is because only the fans that freak out on the internet in response to haters or critics are the ones who anyone actually notices.
Why is everyone believing this review because it gave a good score, but when the other IGN reviews give bad scores that's when IGN doesn't count.
Hypocrites.
Wow, I was expecting "6/10, terrible graphics." knowing ign. I'm glad they got it right for once.
I have never played it. I have been thinking about it. Should I get it on the switch?
Colin Ray get it 100%
Did ya get it?
xPacifist ya I did.
GUYS GUESS WHAT!!!!
earthbound is better.

Rax 27 Dumbass millennial
The Protagonist Respect my opinion, fucker.
Undertale a game that has actual story, characters with feelings that you'll grow attach to, and deciding to whether to kill or spare monsters.....meh not my taste
+Iluvatar Erú Tell that to everyone who played the walking dead
Ew your opinion
+Iluvatar Erú People who care about the gaming medium as an art form and actually care about games, care about what feelings a game can elicit in a player. That's what transends the medium from toys to art.
...their 8 bit characters...What no life grows attached and has feelings for pixels?
OnionKnight1997 Who would grow attach to any character from any TV show, or book, or movie? What difference does it make if its from a game?
Dude. Watching in 2023 gives me nostalgia.
Anyway, its my opinion only, not forcing it onto others, does anyone agree?
i guess you cant like Star wars because thats 20-30 years old too and any film that comes out today is better looking
$5 is why
Toby made it graphically like this for the charm of the character, enemies while being accompanied by amazing ost
just like earthbound the game it was based on
+Phoenix917364 It was programmed by one guy and a majority of the art was made by the same guy and one other person (and all the music was made by him as well), a 3D full-res game would be much harder to program (and would take even longer than 2 years to make), and it also wouldn't be accessible to everyone as not everyone has a "great gaming rig". Undertale was made with everyone in mind, newcomers to experts, men and women, etcetera.
+Ryan Jewell This is a game not a film.
'Ugly'- 10/10
What a stupid review! Graphics aren't everything but they are something. If you think a game has 'visual limitations' why give it a perfect score? And if you don't think the graphics are a problem why did you bring them up?
People that hate undertale just because of the fan base really needs to play the damn game
Just tell me why you disagree if you don't)
trueeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee3eeeeeee
Chicken Permission Most other games have you: Talk to someone, stealth, shoot. With far less to do. Most games have combat and occasional talking while Undertale has combat with loads of different enemys with multiple attack and each enemy has different attacks and a different way to spare them. The puzzles are unique and diverse and the characters are very different and the conversations are great. I think Undertale is the least repetitive game I've ever played.
"consistently funny dialogue"
Yes, I too find cringey 'RANDOM LOL! XD SPAGJETTI!!' writing as hilarious.
There's literally one of the smartest quantum physics jokes I've ever seen in this game.
+Methose Xemas This game does have random humor, but I feel it balances it well with the well set up jokes that make sense. (Also puns, which have always found to be my weak point).

hipsters have now become people hating on indie games and non hipsters love indie games... yeah no that makes perfect sense
You're giving Zelda TP HD an 8.6 because it had bad graphics and a 10 for this? Wtf
Boaz Baruchin you cant understand
@@whatinception Your mum can't understand
Kushagra Yadav yeah she is not familiar with the game
I'm not a Undertale crazy fanboy, but I agree with the with the score, this industry have one lesson or two to take note from Undertale. The game is not perfect, far from it, but pun intended Undertale is a game changer title for gaming.
Riding the hype train as usual IGN
wtf why would they talk about games nobody heard about lmao.
+YUNG LVRD You must not use the internet much, Undertale is huge right now.
YUNG LVRD This game came out in September last year
Ign employees were actually large part of spreading the initial hype for the game
+TheAlexJ They didn't do a review on it so why not make a review.
+ Control over Undertale's world. Every action you do in this game affects the game's characters, dialogue, story, and endings. Giving you a sense of being important.
+ It's charming. This is something that I believe hooks a lot of players. This goes for the game's: characters, music, funny attention to detail, and the game being self-aware that it's a video game (this also makes up a great deal of this game's focus)
+Characters.
1.Undertale
2.Don't Starve
3.Risk of Rain
4.Organ Trail
5.Lone Survivor Dc
6.Steamworld Dig
7.Shovel Knight
These games have soul heart and character unlike the massively oversaturated market of Exclusives & Franchises.
I'm not a fan of Undertale nor have I played it, but the haters are just as cancerous as the fan base.
Undertale is an objectively good game. There's not subjectivity involved. If you think it's bad, you lack a sense of humor, and can't follow a narrative well enough to appreciate the game, seemingly. This game has more attention to detail than 90% of triple A titles I play on a yearly basis.
1-2 small objects per location = attention to detail. It's objectively overrated
DD DD why people like the game is because of the expirence you have even though it's an RPG items don't matter too much
Why they like it is another matter. I was questioning one specific statement from the 1st comment
R\iamverysmart be like
It's a good game but the humor is crap and the narrative is abysmal. It's very clearly not meant to have a big story.
The game is a good game and all, but it does not deserve a perfect score, I would have given it an 8.5 out of 10 or something like that, never a perfect 10.
Could you name your reasons?
+Tiago Macedo Well I didn't really like the characters much, I found the gameplay to be a good attempt at a new gameplay style for an RPG but not exactly revolutionary, and the only parts of the game that really grasped my interest were the parts near the end of the numerous endings.
+Ness Alt #2 Well, I suppose everyone has their opinion, I personally loved the characters, from the goofy Papyrus to Flowey, that little psycho. For me it is a solid 10/10, regardless of what the others might say.
+Tiago Macedo what's this? A undertale fan that's not toxic and trying to shove the game down everyone's throat?
I feel like this not fair. They gave it the game of the year then reviewed it. So there was an expectation before the review to perfect score it. I love undertale, but I say it is a 8-9. The story is short even when there are many paths to take. If you are one for more violence then you'll hate this game as it gives you feels for doing so.
I'm just glad there isn't gonna be 4 games in one year with a purely 10 year old fan base. *cough* fnaf *cough*
or maybe they finished the review and then uploaded it.
+Kylo Ren maybe. Just seems like a pushed thing ya know?
+HRPrimeGaming This game took 11 hours to complete True Pacifist run... And MANNY OBJECTS ARE USED ONCE. Every room is almost with new objects, almost without stereotypes!
Personally only really like the soundtrack, other than that I think the game is a rather standard rpg with one thing that sets it aside from others. The community shouts at you for doing "the wrong path" making the game feel like it has one face, and that is killing nothing.
Starfox 2: 5/10
Undertale (good game too): 10/10
I mean... WTF? Starfox 2 is supposed to look like that, it is a SNES game with Super FX Technology.
Welcome to IGN.

so you give little nightmares an 8.8 when little nightmares is far better in design and horror, undertale falls flat on its face when you compare it to earthbound, and you give that a perfect 10?
I personally don't like Undertale. The only good thing to come out of it in my opinion is the music.
nothing on cons? so it has no flaws. alright.

Phenomenal game. Toby Fox did a great job on this. Easily one of my game of the years.
undertale is what i think games SHOULD be, an interaction, a story of choices, an EXPERIENCE. something that can't exist in other mediums. something that interacts with you and rewards you for interacting with it. there are many ways to make video-games, many ways to create things in any medium, but for games i feel that the best way is to interact with the player directly, make them feel emotions, make mechanics part of the story, and use the fact that games are interactive in a way that is fun and interesting. things like COD and Battlefield are good for what they are, but they aren't as good as they could potentially be, those games are impersonal and cold, they may be made to appeal to any audience but none of those audiences will have as much fun as they would with something specifically tailored for them, something like that feels more personal, like the creator had decided from the start that they wanted to make something that those specific types of players could interact with and interact with them. games like undertale feel much more open to their specific audiences because of things like this.
