Wow dude! I saw one in the hills here in California when I was like 8. I was at a friend’s house, about to go inside, and I didn’t see one curled up at the door, ready to strike, but he didn’t bite me. I was like a foot away from him. I think that has traumatized me for life.
No, it's just a threat. It's to prevent anyone from messing with them. I've come across many who rattled at me and thankfully I've never been bit. 😂 I just back off when they start rattling.
