Carol Webb has been involved with the Basenji since 1962. Her love and devotion to the breed is unparalleled. She has seen the breed develop from a landrace to a pure breed dog. She has seen the early Basenji who were quite sharp and aloof change into a gregarious and loving companion.
The Basenji is a hunting dog. It was bred from stock that originated in central Africa. Most of the major kennel clubs in the English-speaking world place the breed in the sighthound type. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale places the breed in group five, spitz and primitive types, and the United Kennel Club (US) places the breed in the Sighthound & Pariah Group.

Would you recommend it for someone living in the countryside without a fence around the house? Do you think they could be trained to not run after every animal they see? I currently have an Alpine dachsbracke, also a hunting dog, and he's perfect regarding this. He doesn't go anywehere. He does chase but stops after a hundred meters and comes right back. It seems like every breed I like chases after everything that moves -.-

@@kerielwatson3197 i had a basenji chihuahua mix and he was very smart and learned very quickly. In the beginning he was a little hard to train because he was very independent and the trouble i had was he was very curious and a few times he escaped my gated driveway and liked to hunt smaller animals also these dogs have no fear. They will walk up to bigger dogs to play or fight if you don't pick up behavioral cues. He lived to be about 7/8 yrs old and he was very loyal and the things this lady said are very true. these dogs will not listen to you if you don't treat them with respect and you need patience. They act like toddlers. If my dog was mad that i left for a long time for work he would pee or poop on the floor by the entrance or in your shoe. He was extremely smart and these dogs can not be home alone for long hours. He was house trained great with kids and pad trained. these dogs have a big adventurous personality.

Wow... I am in Africa. The very first dog I owned as a child was a cross breed between basenji, terrier and the German shepherd. The dog lived to about 13 years and just mysteriously went missing. We never saw it die. The Vet just told me the dog was a cross between terrier and German shepherd. The Vet never mentioned that is was also part basenji. Now I've seen this video and found the missing part of the puzzle. Thank you so much for this video.

There is honestly no way to describe the experience that is owning & bonding with a Basenji. Rescuing a Basenji was one of the greatest experiences of my Mother and I’s lives, and it completely changed our perspective on what a dog could be. It sounds cliche, but there are TRULY no other dogs like a Basenji, and no good way to describe their massive wit and personalities. I have a million stories/memories of our Sadie Lady and I miss her every day. Once you have had a Basenji every other dog falls ever so slightly short.

  • @xbioman7882
    @xbioman7882 Рік тому +3

Our first Basenjii was definitely snappy. He loved the family, but would not allow any other children around out son as he considered him in his pack. I generally had to have the alpha male discussion with him about every 3 months. When he got older, he had a couple of strokes and calmed way down. Lived to 17 and died in my arms. Our current guy is the sweetest dog I've ever had in my life. He fits the description this wonderful lady describes. On our daily walks, he wants to investigate EVERYTHING and EVERYONE. Unfortunately he does not like other dogs. He will go up to them as if he is totally friendly, then snap at them.

My dad was in the peace corps in Cameroon and loved these dogs while he was there, they'd run with him when he was on his motorcycle and he thought they were the coolest dogs ever. Where he was they put bells on their collars since they're so quiet most of the time. The fact that they're so ancient is so fascinating. I thnk when she says Coyote she probably means Jackal though, since Coyote do not live there historically. Also, screw the AKC, if the dogs are having those types of health issues, bring in more dogs, get that gene pool broadened, make sure those dogs are healthy. AKC shouldn't have any say in if you can make the dogs healthier. the dog's health matters more than the aesthetics. also, my Dad never ran into the snapping problem, in rural Cameroon they just treated them like normal dogs.

The Basenji was the favorite breed of my childhood. I would always search for them in breed books, I always wore my Basenji T-shirt, and I sometimes fantasized about owning a Basenji named Benji (I knew it was a cliché name back then, too).
I'm now 26 and still haven't owned one, but it will happen later, when I have my own land and can have as many dogs as I want.

Frida Nyberg I grew up with Basenjis and will never own any other breed if I have a choice. My dog's name was King Benjamin (Benny) and I miss him every day. I had no idea it was such a stereotypical name lol it's the one he came with, so... Before him, we had one called Rio, but he was stolen. 😣 More recently, my parents had 2 show dogs, sisters called Ruby and Rica (their show names were ridiculously long). Now, they have a Rottie, but as I live on the other side of the world, I've never met him.

After watching Carol's video I had a lump in my throat. Our last tri-color Basenji "Whisper" was bought for my son after we lost our first one to, I believe, a coyote while living in the rural country. He was entering his teens so she became my dog though she slept on his bed. After he went to school and the wife went to work and the house was quiet, I would softly start to howl. After a couple she would answer a little louder. Back and forth we'd go until I could scream no louder, and she'd come running down the hall to see if I was OK. She would actually invent little games for me to play with her. She was 11 when she started to pee in the house and became thirsty all the time. The last time I cried so much and so hard was when my first dog was ran over at 14 when I was 16. The vet said the tests showed she had Canine Crushing s. The treatment was very costly and I was just diagnosed with severe non-military PTSD and could not work. The vet explained that her "accidents" caused her more stress for the breed and it was decided to put her down. Once-in-a-while I will put "Rocky", a realistic
raccoon hand puppet on and remember the battles my little girl had with it. After more that 10 years I still miss her terribly, but I live alone now and I can't bear the thought of another pet dying on me. KL

I am a Nigerian and these dogs are common to us, they're considered as dogs with no value at all, I didn't even know it's called a basenji till this day. They're indeed used as hunting dogs till today but because it's very common we didn't really attach any importance to it, such a Petty.

The name basenji is how Congolese call them. The purest basenjis actually originate from the central African region (Congo's. Cra)

That seems an overall African problem, to not see value in something until someone else does. Truly ashame.

Same thing with the Indian Pariah dog, they can survive anything and live a VERY LONG life, people don't care for them. I've a stray that comes in front of my homes everyday to get food, he doesn't have any smell, has double coat and he can run for miles, he follows me on my motorcycle.

These particular pups are also special as they were also depicted being the dog of choice for Egyptians and Pharos. They’re said to be more in tune with spirits and a lot more feline like than dog.

I had the Honor of having a red basenji from Rita Webb. Though he died this year from old age, they are the best type of dog to have for patient people. Non agressive, and mines was very very loving. Great show dog qualities! Ate quality food and live'd over 12yrs+

@@hiccup61 , you are doing a great job raising this breed native to central africa.
Being direct descendants of African jackal/wolf cross, Basenjis still exhibit some primitive level of independence not seen with the European types that have been crossed severally for obedience and other characteristics.
It's a good family dog. You'll love it.
      Love from West Africa.
