I just started breeding crickets for my bearded dragon. I didn't put any screen over the egg beds and the crickets didn't eat all the eggs (not sure if they ate some or not). I have hundreds of babies!! I just took 5 males and 5 females, put them in a small, separate "breeding" tank with a yogurt cup full of store-bought compost (all organic). I made sure the breeders were fed and I misted the egg bed when it looked dry. When one of the adults died I just replaced it with one of my "feeder" crickets. After a week I took out the egg bed and put it in a separate "hatching" tank and but a new egg bed in the breeder tank. I use the word tank because I use old fish tanks I had around the house, but plastic tubs seem to be the favorite container.
@@Matthew-cd8iv I didn't have a heating pad. They were in the garage and I had a heat lamp for when it was cold. Are your crickets old enough to breed?
thanks for posting this video. you did a great job explaining what you did and why you did it. i am sure a lot of people have appreciated your time and effort
Rainbow mealworms is a great place to buy crickets online in bulk for a lot cheaper than a pet shop. :) Good quality and they usually send more than you order. I plan on starting my own cricket breeding soon myself and plan on getting my starters from them.
You should breed dubia roaches, they are heathier, they are easier to keep, they arent loud, they don't get out, they cant survive in your house and they can't fly
That was a grasshopper in the intro not a cricket. Breeding is the way to go, you can sell your excess in Craigslist and make your money back fast! I started with fruit flies and am already getting about 150-200 a day from 1 colony. I started 2 more today as well, so you can imagine the numbers I'll be seeing soon.
Depends on what species you're breeding. Some need higher temperatures than others, but for Acheta Domesticus, you should keep it around 79 to 90 F. I don't think you should have the light on all the time either, because it'd be bad for your humidity and it might get too hot, not to mention they're nocturnal.
If you cant breed crickets, a good place to find cheap ones is a bait shop. I can buy 100+ for about 7 bucks. Of course this is in rural Louisiana where bait shops are around every corner.
@Michelle- Just Playin do female or male crickets really eat the eggs? I havent noticed this but the eggs are tiny so it would be tough to see. Im thinking of adding that protective mesh on the substrate/soil
keep lots of food in with them. dry foods and fruit/veggies, mist the lay boxes. and the crickets drink the water from the lay boxes and wont eat the eggs. you do not need screen on the lay boxes
My crickets crawl up the packaging tape I taped around the inside of their box and on top of that they took the grass and leaves that's in it with them and piled it up in one section of an egg container and stay in it.
i'm thinking of breeding my own crickets because my frogs need them and i'm planning on getting a gecko soon too and like sometimes the crickets we buy from petsmart all fkn die like a couple days later and i have to buy like $10 worth of crickets a week which is rediculous
That plastic mesh for your egg laying trey, my cricket's been known to bite through that just for the heck of it to be honest.. Id say purchase some flexible stainless steel wire mesh to prevent them from biting through than just a normal plastic mesh. Female crickets have the tendency to dig to aim for the most moist part of the ground. No offense, just sharing my ideas..
Michelle- Just Playin Great vid , how long do you leave the egg trays in with the adults before transferring the trays to another container for hatching ? Thanks
I was wondering if you have any problems with ants? For some reason ants is attacking and killing off my cricket colony and I still haven’t produced eggs due to ants keep killing them off...
DiamondDude 185 they aren't suppose to eat lettuce, they need collard greens. they also need to eat some kind of insects(meal worms, butter worms, super worms, crickets etc.) adult bearded dragons should have about 75% insects and 25% greens.
Jamie meal worms make good treats for most turtles and are a staple in many lizards diets. They're really easy to breed and have good nutritional value.
I ordered 1000 for $24.00 shipped. That's like 2.4c a piece. I'm interested in saving money but damn these things are disgusting. Just the smell alone.
I just put in my baby crickets that were about 2 -3 weeks old in with my adults that are laying eggs and the adults ate them even though they are fed very well. Separate them.
I have a bluebelly lizard and a alligator lizard and a scorpion I feed my bluebelly lizard 6 crickets and I feed my alligator lizard 10 crickets then I feed my scorpion 2 crickets per day the well help me to feed my lizards and my scorpion
sorry.. but you put the mesh on the soil how do they lay the eggs in the soil if its covered with a mesh? willthey lay the eggs on the mesh and they fall through.. or.. what?
TheDiamondKid 2.0 I hope you don't actually mean lettuce. Lettuce is a horrible thing to feed bearded dragons, collard greens and mustard greens are hopefully what you mean. And if you don't feed them crickets that's unhealthy for them, but hornworms and super worms, along with Dubai roaches can make up for that. Though it's not that good to still not feed them crickets.

Armicia x I think she did it just to be safe thanks for the advice trying to get a bearded dragon but to expensive gonna also try to breed super worms
Did u have a heat pad or anything? I'm interested in your strategy, because I cannot get mine to breed.
@@Matthew-cd8iv

Are your crickets old enough to breed?
I did this for my tarantula and it works!!! I am 11 and I sell them and give them to my tarantula I am happy I watched this
how much do you make
I'm 18 and I'm still trying to figure out how to properly breed them 😂 good job
@@lalycruz5645 swear I just turned 17 and I’m struggling to do this too
Love that name. Going to have a good sense of humor. @.@
thanks for posting this video. you did a great job explaining what you did and why you did it. i am sure a lot of people have appreciated your time and effort
Thank you very much.....In all my videos I always go into detail to make sure I share all the knowledge of anything I am talking about.
My crickets started chirping so I hope we have tiny ones with in 30 days! Thanks for the video.
The intro was funny😄😄😄😄😄
Oh, my goodness that's expensive for crickets, it really is better to breed your own, thank you for sharing, saw you in Pickrick's stream this morning
You just started.. Pretty bold to say "the right way"... You have alot to learn..
Great video thanks ill be raising my own crickets now.

At are store u can get 1000 for 19 dollars
Do you got an updated video of how well this worked out for you?
You should breed dubia roaches, they are heathier, they are easier to keep, they arent loud, they don't get out, they cant survive in your house and they can't fly
I wish I could. Too creepy lol. Trying to get my son to do this
Tip..glue on the outside might be more healthy for whatever eats the crickets. The crickets will eat the glue.Great vid though..thanks
Bro I can't stop watching the intro
Cool video
great, more animals in the house, lol
Agreed
That into deserves to be on interdimensional tv from rick and morty. I wish i could see him flying

I LOVE YOUR INTRO
I love your intro
keep lots of food in with them. dry foods and fruit/veggies, mist the lay boxes. and the crickets drink the water from the lay boxes and wont eat the eggs. you do not need screen on the lay boxes
Do you still have them and do you have an update on what did and did not work well
Nice intro
I have two wild tree frogs that my mother and i caught we feed them crickets and waxworms and this helps a lot
Am I the only one that wants to pet the crikets?
probably yes
James Gaming yes weirdo
No, that's why i'm here too:D
Yes
No u not
Thank you for the help!
can you do this outside (the weather is warm enough btw) without the heat lamp?
Edit: and where did you get the mesh (cost?)
My crickets crawl up the packaging tape I taped around the inside of their box and on top of that they took the grass and leaves that's in it with them and piled it up in one section of an egg container and stay in it.

I'm just going to make an all nutritional cricket from with real plants and spring tails to keep the mold down
What if we ate the crickets...haha jk jk...
Unless 😳
All around the world people eat crickets even I do it tasted a bit salty and crunchy and like a potatoe chip but you can add spices to make them tasty
We eat crickets at my house lol
What happens when the eggs are hatched , like what do you do with the babies ? Do you just dump them in with the other crickets
Did your egg beds work
What do you feed them for?
good video :)
Do you need to leave the light on them all the time
how do you keep the hatch trays wet during hatch without drowding babys
I spray them down and put saran wrap over them and it keeps them moist.
For an enclosure, could you use an aquarium with lid/screen
Robin Gagan of course
9:24 When the egg open how do the babys g’ets out When there are a net
great info
How would you clean it
Thanks for the info
amazing intro hahaha
where can you get mesh screen?
Crickets love potatoes it provides food and water for a lot cheaper
when the crickets hatch how do they get out
You put the egg beds into another container and when the hatch they jump out into that container until you decide to transfer them.
That plastic mesh for your egg laying trey, my cricket's been known to bite through that just for the heck of it to be honest.. Id say purchase some flexible stainless steel wire mesh to prevent them from biting through than just a normal plastic mesh. Can u use a heat pad instead of s lamp
Yes you sure can on the outside. I have even use a heat rock in mine before. Good Luck!
But make sure you don't kill them
Is it fine if you dont have the Fly protecter stuff on the Dirt boxes?
HardyBoxPot yes they bury their eggs
Crickets also like tetra flakes, trust me
👍🏼
I was wondering if you have any problems with ants? For some reason ants is attacking and killing off my cricket colony and I still haven’t produced eggs due to ants keep killing them off...
Be careful with feeling ur lizard Crickets, if it's a baby and u put to many crickets in with it, they can eat him
damn
yeah gotta wait till they can crush them.
they wont eat him unless you put in so many its drowning in them and I've seen many times where the beardy just flicks them right off
Hahahahaha I know that is real but it sounds funny. Food ate the eater 😂😂😂
Hell there 1.99 in Mi at magoose. But bait shops hook you up
I feed mine lettuce and I have had him for 4 years

Lexi Eberle I think he was talking about his turtle
Lexi Eberle but if it where bearded dragons your 100% accurate
Lexi Lou not meal worms
Jamie meal worms make good treats for most turtles and are a staple in many lizards diets. They're really easy to breed and have good nutritional value.
Not to mention they are frequently out of crickets which I dont understand why
At my petco crickets are 11 cents
That is crazy and to much.
I ordered 1000 for $24.00 shipped. That's like 2.4c a piece. I'm interested in saving money but damn these things are disgusting. Just the smell alone.
Kevin871 my pets smart for 100 crickets it's 20 bucks and they don't even put 100
15 cents a cricket
Go to a gas station advertising live bait and you can get the same crickets for 100 for ~5 dollars
How do you know which crickets to feed to your bearded dragon?
robert justus the crickets have to be smaller than the gap between their eyes, I think
Just make sure there smaller than the space between the eyes
25-30 crickets at my local petsmart is only 2.50 - ~3.00
You should but a separate box for them to lay eggs
In all, how much did this cost?
question do you leave the light on 24 seven
chance arana does the sun stay on 24/7 ?
chance arana just turn it off when you go to sleep
my name is max
deathdog1249 Sanchez nice

sorry.. but you put the mesh on the soil how do they lay the eggs in the soil if its covered with a mesh? willthey lay the eggs on the mesh and they fall through.. or.. what?
roarbl crickets have ovipositors which are like straws that they stick through the mesh and inject the eggs into the dirt
