Looks like a really nice set up. I like the engine and drivetrain out of a school bus. I’ve entertained the idea of building a stern wheeler just haven got there yet. However I did spend fifty years of my life on towboats. I do like to build things and do my own work and fabricating. I don’t have a dock space or river front property which would be a major challenge to overcome.
Beautiful boat! I thought about doing something similar with an old pickup I've got except I was thinking of making it a side wheeler. I want something I can throw on a trailer and move it from the Ohio river to Grayson Lake and back.
TheBoatman11 You've given me a great idea with your build! I have a 68' x 22' Push boat that i'm converting into a sternwheeler. I love your engine and drive set up. I plan on using 2 - 7.3idi engines (simple, non-electronic diesels) for dual wheels. I tried to find jazzridez bearing distributors that you mentioned but didn't locate them. I noted you used 160 chain, any information on the drive gear (teeth, size etc) and larger sprocket (size, number of teeth etc) would be greatly appreciated! I plan to document the build as well and give you credit for the engine room and wheel ideas :)
That's a really nice boat. For cooling, I'd approach it slightly differently. I'd remove the radiator and replace it with an alu tube bent into a zigzag and liberally welded to the floor of the hull below the engine. To cool the manifolds and exhaust, I'd leave the fan in place and build an enclosure around the engine to throw the heat out a louvered opening up high at the stern.
TheBoatman11 One day maybe. They used to run sternwheelers here on the Skeena river back in the day, but it's been over 100 years since the last one. It's a big river, but it's swift. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steamboats_of_the_Skeena_River The lower Skeena between Terrace and Prince Rupert is fairly mellow, but things get a little hairy between Terrace and Hazelton. My biggest concern (besides money) is speed, I'd need a fast boat to make reasonable headway upstream.
Great Idea, would appreciate if I can get your advice for building smal cruise or pantoon using the mechanical mechanism of sternwheel, capacity of cruise 50 passengers, with all entertainment facilities, small food counter , toilets for tourism purpose in the river, what you suggest for me engine wise, power, specification,....etc as will Hulls type ...etc Really would appreciate your advice . Thanks so much in advance
hi it looks a very well done job is it possible to have some details if I use Hydraulic pump and motor, for the of 100' x 30' x 1.5' ship converting from conventional propellers to stern wheeler. further can you advise the size of stern wheel may it required, I have yanmar 400 hp twin engine fitted in it can be used. I will be very thankful you for your help. thanks. Zubair

Good Job. I would prefer a diesel generator, say a Volkswagen or Mercedes prime mover, and keep petrol (Gasoline in U.S.A.) out of the inside of the hull.
Also, did you consider putting in a larger radiator for extra cooling capacity? I've seen a couple sites on building sternwheelers that recommended doing that.

Very, very impressive. I like how it is set up with everything labeled, wires nice and neat, very presentable and practical.

Absolutely f.n. cool!
I'm used to boats where the engines & equipment are run from the engine room.
That way you have to look at it & can see that it's ready to go.

Bigger the wheel the better, hydraulic drive is great if engineered properly but very expensive
