All your videos are great, this one was awesome, these ideas not taught anymore. My father's words are ringing in my head "phyc yourself up and take the job you can get, until you can get the job you want". I was hoeing weeds with him in a giant cauliflower field. 90° 80 % humidity, full sun no breeze. He was moving up and down the field breaking the dirt so it didn't dry so much and getting every weed. I was plodding along stoping every few plants, leaning on my hoe and giving a big sigh. On his second row of lapping me he walked over to me and said " This has to get done
You can make a game out of it or do whatever you have to, get it done and be proud of your work. Or you can do what your doing and just SUFFER for as long as it takes. The weeds don't care, the cauliflower doesn't care, and frankly neither do I." Then he went back to his row in disgust. That stung, his disgust and saying he didn't care....he always cared. Well it shocked me into the reality that suffering or cheerfully getting a good job done to stand in the shade in satisfaction, is all in your head. At the end of the day, the good tired can be cured with a night's sleep. The suffering tired never goes away. Sorry got a little off topic there. My heart aches for young men who've never been really taught.

First off, I’m glad you and your wife made it safely to Tx. The problem with too many of folks these days is that they say they’d like to live in the 1800’s but the reality of it is, they wouldn’t be able to make it. I come from a very large family and was raised to be self sufficient. My mom taught all of my siblings and I to cook, sew, iron, and clean. If I hadn’t learned to sew, I’d have been running around with holes in my socks and pants.

Just now getting to all your video’s thanks to the boy (our son) and am really enjoying them
It might be considered old school, but my Mom raised all of kids being able to cook, clean,do laundry and sew. Over the years, countless times, those things have sure come in handy. She also exposed us to music, art and a variety of sports to enable us, along with the aforementioned tasks, to have a wider view of the world and what it had to offer. Probably, like you have heard many people say, if only had I known then what I know now and appreciated what she did for us

Good advice for everyone, I run into so many young people that don't know how to do much of anything other than the job they're currently working. What really gets me, is that they have access to all the information they could ever want, but don't bother to learn new skills--instead, they seem to just want to be entertained all day, but then complain about being bored. And it's not just young people, I see this a lot in the middle-aged folks too, and they miss out on a lot of life's experiences.

When I started I was asked to look after 120 Hereford heifers that were about to calf. Three times a day looking thru which heifer was about to calf. during that time a few pulled calves and one breech that I had to call my dad in to assist, but we got it done. fixed a couple water gaps that washed out, and a whole lot of feeding , checking water, gathering eggs etc. You won't run out of things to do and most likely discover some that needs done. All in taking care of business when the regular guy had to be away. Make a Hand as they say.

Good advice. My dad hired us out in the summer hauling hay. From that it’s always spread word of mouth that my brothers and I earn our way. I’ve always took a job as just that “a job”. It’s up to the one signing the check to define it. With that attitude, in my 51 years, I’ve never had to ask for “a job”. Because of that, I’ve had a lot of people take a chance, and I’ve learned new skills. There’s not much I can’t do, most of that is just because I have no desire too.

My sons were taught to cook several basic meals starting at about 13. Running a ranch is surely multi-tasking. While I was growing up any job that needed to be done might just be yours depending on the day and the needs. I can change a tire (well used to) cannot drive a tractor. You get across that a wrangler, a cowboy, that knows what he or she is doing takes good care of the animals, starting with your horse, or my interest, mules. Your videos are important, your videos are educational, informative, and encouraging.

This is pretty much what happened to me. I had been getting little bits of work here and there but just enough to get by. Then my mum and I got tickets to go on a trail ride at a horse farm here in Ireland. The place was amazing and at the end I asked about helping out. Next thing I know they offer me a job as a handy man, During the summer I got to work a lot with the horses and taking visitors out around on trails about the farm. It was a dream come true. Now that summer is over, things have quietened down and there aren't a lot of opportunities to work with the horses but I still get work driving a tractor, fencing and other handy man stuff, not as fun and I have to stand out in a cold, wet field a lot putting up fences but its still a good job and I love every chance I get working with the horses

Dewayne tells it "straight up" when he talks about jobs as cowboys, wranglers, packers, outfitters, guides, etc. Maybe I can add just a couple of thoughts. Probably won't be worth much, but here it goes anyway.
First off, when we talk about cowboying, wrangling, packing, ad infinitum, you need to know up front that there are a heckuva lot easier ways to make a living. If your goal in life is to accumulate wealth, this isn't the job for you. Oh, don't get me wrong. It's definitely and most assuredly rewarding...just not necessarily in a monetary way.
Second, if you're the kind that likes to sleep in, this job isn't for you. Most days start around 5:00 a.m. or shortly thereafter, and some nights you don't get to hit the blankets until around 11:00 p.m. Oh...and the job doesn't pay overtime.
Third (and this is where Dewayne is a perfect example), jobs where you are riding exclusively, in other words, you won't do any job unless it can be done from the back of a horse, are pretty much a thing of the past. You'll be expected to fix fence, haul hay, drive tractor, and who knows what else. But, if the boss says something needs to be done, you pitch right in and do it. And if you do, like Dewayne, you'll find that you'll pretty much always be able to find work.
Next...a good cowboy has good gear. I'm not talking "new" necessarily, but I am talking quality...well taken care of, no matter how old and used. Of course, there are some real bozos out there that have good gear, but can't tell the difference between manure and honey. Normally, however, you can tell a good cowboy by his gear and that he takes good care of it. Don't be afraid to invest in good equipment. For example, a bench-made saddle is probably going to cost you two months wages...maybe more. But it'll probably last your grandkids and it won't sore the horse. Also, if you're riding a saddle that has the propensity of soring your assigned horses, the boss will either tell you to fix it or get rid of it and buy a good one.
And while we're talking about not soring your animals, if you don't know how to shoe your horses...learn. Oh, I'm not necessarily talking about enrolling in farrier's school, but a good course at your local community college is hard to beat. You won't be crippling your horses or driving nails into the quick of the foot. On a lot of places, that's one of the requirements that you shoe the horses assigned to you.
I've probably forgotten a lot that I was going to mention, but I've rattled on enough.
And before I forget...congratulations, Dewayne, on the new job. Best of luck to you.

The Guadalupe River comes off that lake & runs to New Braunfels. Crystal clear spring fed with some class 4 rapids & waterfalls.

It pays the same, LOL. Do the job, any job, the best way you can & "diversify" your "portfolio"; Jack of all trades, master of many. Life's too short to be boring & you never know what's around that next bend. Excellent advice! Thanks!

I don’t know if UA-cam tags send a notification, but I’m tagging Dwayne so that in the case that it does, he would have a higher chance of seeing this comment. Thanks Jerrod. Dwayne keep it up!

Welcome to Temple, Texas. I live in Little River about 6 miles south of town. Grew up here and if we can help you, call out.

Duane, you are getting your foot in the door, that's what some people don't understand about life! Enjoy your content... Though I'm not here to be a wrangler, just a simple farm girl. 😊
