    Regarding dinging Subaru for not "having a more holistic design (e.g. everything buried in screen menus)" - having buttons for critical controls OUTSIDE the touch screen is one of the better things Subaru is doing. Screens fail. Like Toyota, they don't trust them yet with basic climate control, volume control, autonomous safety control, etc. Most of these cars, if the main screen goes down, you don't just lose your radio - you can't manipulate fundamental systems.
    You can't dislike the way the Honda buried everything, even volume controls, in their 'holistic' center screen, then chide Subaru, Toyota etc for not repeating that mistake. I can turn my seat heater on without taking my eyes off the road, and that should never change. You can duplicate such controls in the screen through CAN bus messaging if you must and lose absolutely nothing in either respect.

      While you are correct with mentioning that the physical controls allow you to remember where each button is, I also think that manufacturers like VW are still making high quality screens and infotainment system, that is unlikely to break or get damaged. You did provide a good argument though.

      I like the fact the car has an analogue speedometer and tachometer and it's not busy in the display it shows you what you need to see. Honda has the silliest instrument layout IMO, I hate digital speedometers because it's hard to maintain a constant speed as you don't know if you are heading towards a higher or lower speed when you have the Police behind you and in general I find a needle much easier to glance at and get the gist of the speed I'm travelling than seeing 63mph on a display. In contrast who needs the big tachometer all across the top on a crossover? it's like something off a track day motorcycle - yet they found fault with the Subaru!!

    I've owned two CR-Vs, a RAV-4, and am now on my 2nd CX-5. The latest is the 2019 CX-5 Signature model. All of these have been great vehicles, and I never regretted my choices. I think the newer ones seems better to me, but then again, every new car I buy has more and newer features which probably makes them seem better. The Mazda may not have the cargo space of some of the others, but it sure beats them all as a fun vehicle to drive. And the Signature model is LOADED with features, way more than my wife's 2018 Mercedes C300.

The lower end models make sense because they are supposed to be "economy" models, once you go top of the line you start paying the price of better vehicles IMO. I'd like the Turbo CX5 engine, but am not prepared to pay the price for the models they put it in for a daily driver/commuter vehicle.

    Just picked up a 19 Forester Sport, honestly I like it so far. Yea the controls for the screens take some getting use to but it's not terrible. I don't think the top trim of any of these aside from probably the Tuscon is the best value of for the class, nor will they be the volume trims sold or leased for each model. Mid-trim specs would be appreciated since they don't usually get the biggest wheels and will greater represent what will be seen on the roads.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 років тому

      Unfortunately, comparing "mid-trim" models involves lots of caveats. What is a "mid-trim" vehicle from one manufacturer may be more appropriately compared to top trim from another. Manufacturers typically make their top trim vehicles available to reviewers (if they meet the upper limit price criterion) because they want to demonstrate the range of features available on a particular vehicle. Comparing top trims also involves some caveats but at least the comparison is between what manufacturers consider their "best" examples.

    • @afcgeo882
      @afcgeo882 5 років тому

      Stephen Hendricks it’s actually very easy, if you bother to do a couple of hours of research. Most companies package them fairly similarly in order to be competitive. The issue is that the manufacturers only lend the top trims to show off. If they could borrow from dealers, it’d be different. Ready?
      Rav4 XLE AWD
      Forester Premium
      CR-V EX AWD
      Tiguan SE AWD
      Tucson Value AWD
      Rogue SV AWD
      All similarly priced and packaged.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 років тому

      @@afcgeo882 I'll take your word for the comparisons, George. But a number of reviewers DO borrow examples of vehicles from dealers rather than reviewing manufacturer supplied vehicles. The difficulty is that few dealers are prepared to lend a reviewer a vehicle for a week or more for a detailed review. So reviews of dealer supplied vehicles usually consist of a "walk around," an examination of the interior, and, at best, a short test drive. And unfortunately some of those reviews look more like infomercials for a dealer than an objective review.

    I just bought a new Mazda CX-5 GTR after driving almost every vehicle in this comparison. My wife and I were set to buy a Rav4, but after test driving a $38,000+ MSRP (marketing is smoking some good stuff on this one) Limited version, we couldn't believe how loud the engine was, how poorly it shifted, the road noise, and how jarring the ride was. Also, faux leather and no power passenger seat for $38K? We were squirming in the seats after about 10 minutes when we drove the Tuscon as they were very firm and uncomfortable (leather seats in the Limited trim). We won't even consider the Nissan because of the high failure rate of the Jatco CVT. Honda has a very sluggish CVT and boring styling. And so on and so forth. The Mazda is the most comfortable, quietest, and has the most power (in turbo form). I can't believe it's not in this comparison.

    For those wondering where the Mazda CX-5 is in this comparison, the accompanying article from cars.com says that Mazda was invited to provide a CX-5 but "...Mazda declined participation at this time."
    There are almost always one or more brands missing from comparative reviews like this and the reasons are seldom clear. Sometimes the answer is as simple as a manufacturer not having a press vehicle available at a particular time in a particular location. In other cases a manufacturer may believe their vehicle will not show well in comparison to one or more rivals. And in some cases a manufacturer may feel an earlier review of a model by a particular site/publication was unfair/incomplete and the brand withholds a model as a sort of punishment. (See TFL.cars relationship with Subaru for an example of the last situation.)
    From the site/publication's point of view there's no advantage in limiting the range of vehicles included in a comparative review. More eyeballs are always preferable to fewer eyeballs, conspiracy theories notwithstanding.

      Looking at the reliability data the Tiguan is by far the most unreliable here, and VW's in general are not very reliable based on my experience, so to judge it as #1 in what is admitted to be a close field, does not make sense. Likely reliability should be a factor in such a test and would certainly be high on the list for actual buyers who would overlook some other minor deficiencies in it's favor. In my area they are really having a hard time selling Tiguan's so the depreciation is going to be big, with a model seemingly not popular new. They mark the Jeep Cherokee down without taking into account things like the fact it's the only one with enough towing capacity for anyone with a boat etc. and in the right model is the only one where you can get any genuine off road ability and a low range transmission etc.. So while the test was of interest because I'm in the market for such a vehicle it really told me little of real world use. A factor to consider when "buying" is also are you the type of person who leases or finances and gets a new car every few years, or someone who buys outright and wants 150k plus of reliable use over 10 or 15 years, that makes a big difference to your choice.

The knobs and switches could be located in older cars, either just from memory, or the briefest glance to locate it and send your hand there. Trying to operate a touch screen while driving with bumps and dip in the road requires you to look as you do it as there is no where to locate your finger/hand as in an actual switch of some type.

      kamary brown for long-term reliability, only the Toyota stands out. No CVT, no auto start/stop and a dual injection system that cures carbon buildup of DI engines. Plus no turbo to worry about. Parts are cheap and many are in common with the Camry. The hybrids are also top notch.
      I would place the Mazda as #2 for mostly the same reasons.
      It’s too bad that Subaru changed their motor to a DI system with auto start/stop. Combined with a problematic CVT, it’s bound to be below average in reliability. Plus, this year’s model is heavier and burdened.
      The oil dilution problem is killing the CR-V. Resale values have dropped and lawsuits are plentiful. They released a software update for a fix, but likely will need redesigned piston rings, which they’re not doing yet. Steer clear.
      Terrain/Equinox are actually a good choice, if with the 2.0T engine, but it needs at least 91 octane. They are having some steering/brake issues, but nothing major. The 1.5T is an overburdened dog and carbon buildup is an issue with 87 octane being used. Stay clear.

It's main screen above also has so much practical information about the car other than just a temperature, clock, date and time. Maintenance reminder, tire pressure, gradation from 0 degrees to hill descent and up hills at whatever degree, 12, 20, whatever. It has the best CVT transmission of the bunch. Best AWD without question in this group. MPG is at least second. 29 mpg combined, 33 highway. Probably the best safety features with the Eyesight. Don't forget the X-Mode feature that allows you to get out of even tougher situations in snow, mud and sand. These guys didn't mention anything about these important features. That Cherokee was named as the top 10 worst SUVs out there in its class. Like they said an awfully bad transmission with poor shifting, clunky, and overall reliability isn't good. A good off roader possibly. Yet, the Subaru Forester is as good or better than any of the models here you've given your opinions on. Which is by the way just opinions. They certainly should have included the Mazda CX-5. Next to Honda's CRV, Forester and Mazda CX-5, I believe they are neck and neck competitively. Can't say the Toyota RAV4 isn't competitive obviously because of reliability obviously. Yet, Subaru, Honda, Mazda, are all very reliable. Many experts so called professional reviews didn't like the ride quality either in the Toyota RAV4. Certainly doesn't match the interior of the best like Mazda, Honda, and yes really nice and dramatic improvement for the Forester. Volkswagen is nice, but I wouldn't rave about it and put it into an Audi class. Even the Rogue looks good and maybe better. Tucson and all of the Hyundai Kias have too much plastic going on in the interior. There all okay and good vehicles but the standout is the Forester that does everything well. Maybe not on the exterior looks as others. That's for sure. Yet, your in the vehicle all the time and it's what's on the inside that counts for me. Plus what's under the hood with that proven Boxer engine and best arguably AWD system out there. Arguably of course would be the Quattro, or also the Acura SH-AWD. Missed a couple more, but in this group. Subaru wins hands down. Nothing against the Tiguan except for reliability and just doesn't have the resale value of Subaru's, Honda's or Toyota. Mazda CX-5 costs $34,000 just to get heated seats. Subaru at 29,000 CDN comes standard with heated seats. The base engine in the CX-5 is just okay. You've got to spend more to get decent power. In the old school 6 speed transmission gearbox. Plus not everyone is thrilled with the Knob infotainment system which you have to scroll through to find whatever your looking for. Like the BMWs they've copied it pretty much. Some love it. It's like all the vehicles here they've reviewed. Buy what you love, as they said all brands are definitely making better vehicles all the time and the competition is getting closer and closer to each other

    I just bought a used Jeep Cherokee a couple weeks ago, which is how I ended up here. I absolutely love it. My only complaint is the short shifting 9-speed. It shifts a little hard and at weird times, but I am getting used to the timing. I have noticed that it shifts a lot more smoothly if you accelerate at the right pace. I also looked at the Tuscon (too small for me), Rogue (outdated and ugly interior), and CR-V (couldn't afford it and didn't like it anyway). If I had the money for the Forrester or the Tiguan I would have gone that route, but I'm still quite happy.

      Ugh, they're so ugly though and CVTs..I'll pass. I want to love Suburu, but just too strange looking. That said, several brands have either way too sloping roof lines (trying to look sporty, but losing ALL visibility, rear headroom and storage space), or bulbous, overly swollen rear and front ends or worst of all, overly huge, gaping grills (Lexus, Toyota...FUGLY!). Suburus is more muted in all those respects, but they're is just a strange, non-elegant look to them...econo look I guess. I don't know, just not my thing and the engines may last but the whole lineup is under-powered, slow, and the MPG is just average or slightly better I suppose considering the lack of power/response.

    I think everyone is thinking the same thing. The Mazda is missing. I know at least in Australia and Europe reviews not only rated it highly, but in Australia it's by a large margin, the best selling model.
    But at least the Tiguan Allspace is in the test. That's right - there are two types of Tiguans. In most markets this is called the Allspace. It's the long wheelbase Tiguan, and in a market for example like Australia, this Tiguan competes with the Mazda CX-8, whereas the normal Tiguan competes with the CX-5.
    The US gets the Tennessee made Atlas to reduce costs on the MQB platform, instead of the European Touareg (which is sold in all other markets) on the more expensive PL71 platform (which is used for the Cayenne and Audi Q7). The US gets a cheaper Passat once again made in the US on an older platform (reserved for the US and China), while the rest of the world gets a newer MQB Passat.
    It's certainly important to keep costs down. Which is why the Tennessee and Mexican VW plants will always run hot for North America. But head to tiny Australia, and the VW model list is twice as long, more trims and vehicles like the Amarok and Scirocco that make it to the smaller market, simply because they aren't so cost sensitive.
    VW is really a study in economics :)

In Japan, Toyota is getting buddy with Mazda which is leading to a bigger network. Mazda used to have as many sales in Japan as their size (i.e. small number), but they are doing very well now despite fact they focus on creating cars more suited to outside Japan rather than inside. Tinted windows, 19 inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, fog lights, panoramic sunroof, foot activated power tailgate, has Nissan pro pilot assist and includes every single safety feature and new technology option that is on the SL Rogue. My grandmas Rogue has the premium package and the black leather interior with the carbon fiber door inserts. Piano black screen area. Heated seats, heated steering wheel. Steering assist. Back up camera with around view monitor and rear cross traffic alert and rear automatic braking and front emergency braking. Has blind spot monitoring. Basically nearly a 35,000$ SUV. Dual zone climate control, emergency SOS, navigation, Apple car play, Sirius xm radio, Bose audio system, has the N/A 170HP 2.5L. The CVT is very responsive. I drove this Rogue many times already and already love it. Has remote start and has like 5 buttons on the Nissan key. Has the sport mode and the eco mode. Average about 27 MPG. This Nissan Rogue is pretty quick off the line compared to others. Put it in sport mode and the tires spin and fake shifts but it gets up and goes a lot more and is more responsive. It’s a nicer looking SUV compared to the class in my opinion. Has every single safety and technology feature which is a must. Has the push to start too. It also has the rear sensors too.

      Well it's a couple of old people's opinion on cars when they are new. Of course everyone knows that the Japanese cars are going to still be on the road and running smoothly year after year. No matter which car you like at the dealership. I do wish reviews would factor and reliability because that's the world in which the rest of us actually live

      And that's because the vehicles included in these comparisons are "focused on SUVs updated or redesigned since our last compact SUV test in 2017..." Reliability and cost of ownership of new generations of vehicles lack an empirical basis for such assessments.

      @@shanmugasundaram6625 Oh really? Where? Unverified anecdotal complaints and testimonials on the web? Friends of friends experiences? Recalls of vehicles for safety issues that have affected perhaps one out of thousand owners? By far the best actual empirical evidence about reliability comes from Consumer Reports annual surveys of owners. But even those reports have to be used with caution when applied to a model for which there may be only a few reports. And even with more caution for new or recently updated models where the differences between the most and least reliable models is minuscule. JD Power ratings are sometimes useful, as well. But JD Power is an advertising firm with all that that implies.
      The folks at cars.com make clear that their ratings are subjective and based on a week's experience with (in this case) five vehicles. Hardly in depth analyses. And they further note both in this video and in the accompanying article (unfortunately a source that requires actual reading) that the vehicles reviewed are very, very close in terms of overall ratings and a consumer's choice depends on many factors including that consumer's own priorities. And they specifically avoid "recommending (vehicles) to buy."

    Why a third row in the Tiguan? Dogs. I feel like VW knew exactly what I needed. My kids sit in the second row, the dogs in the third and everyone has their space. And I can fold down all of them and haul a table. Love this car.

    I just got the 2019 Tiguan SE 4wd and love it. I Tried them all but ride quality and level of refinement is superior on the Tiguan. Power is not the strongest point specially coming from a 3.7v6 but is much better that rav4 and crv. Ride quality, interior noise and the way it handles the road and horrible pot holes around the northeast is amazing. Fuel economy is not the greatest but mostly city driving in the first 200 miles is about 17mpg. which i hope will improve. Overall i'm happy with my purchase. Did i mention the looks?. My white on two tone oak interior is gorgeous, a refreshing European look. Highly recommend it!
