we were cleaning out an old barn and found a full set of rusty cast iron cookware, just about every thing you would need. Including a skillet that was about 18 inches in diameter than you could cook a whole meal in at the same time. I mean it was in bad shape, crusted over with grease from the years of being used in campfires and then throwed into that barn and forgotten. They were heavy and like I said, layers upon layer of build up burnt grease and who know what on the outsides and insides like they were throwed in the barn right after using and never cleaned. I took them home and my grandma told me to build a wood fire and lay them on top and just leave them alone and let the fire burn till it went out. Afterwards we went out and dug them out of the ashes and wow, they looked brand new, you could even read the writing on them. They were washed, put in an oven to dry and then seasoned and they are still in use 45 years later. Still looking great. You cant hurt them.

I remember my Grammy (a dairy farmer's wife) cooking in cast iron. So, a few months ago I bought 2 cast iron skillets on sale at Costco for just $20. Now I keep wondering, why didn't I buy these sooner?!? They just keep getting better with time! I didn't know the old/rusted ones could be salvaged, though! You've inspired me to make a visit to my Grammy's old kitchen cabinets. She died over 15 years ago, but I bet some of her old cast iron and canning supplies (yes, I watched those videos too! :) are still sitting in her house, untouched! It makes my heart happy to know that I might be able to honor her this way. Thank you.

I love my vintage cast iron. My "bar" is that if I feel the inside and know that it's going to be glass smooth--no matter where it comes from--I buy it. I season with organic flax oil because you can take it to 500 degrees... it gets INCREDIBLY hard and makes a great seasoning. (flax is also known as linseed as in "lin"oleum). Tough stuff. Cleaning the rust off can be tricky... I often use "easy off" to clean cast iron that is new to me. But once it's cleaned and seasoned, it's good for YEARS! I love it!!!

I rediscovered cast iron in 1998/99 when an ice storm took out the power for 8 days. I had to cook on the wood stove and cast iron was the only thing I dared to use. I have been hooked ever since. Great video ! Stay safe and God bless. 🐔 🐐 🌱 🐷

My cast iron skillets are little workhorses! Heirloom workhorses. I have one pan that I am the 4th generation to use it. When my son picks a wife, one of my criteria is "will she love my cast iron".

Tip to clean gunky, charred buildup off cast iron without sanding, soaking or grinding: place pans upside-down in oven, turn on self clean cycle and open the windows! Pans come out factory new - just wipe ash off. Season immediately because they will rust right away. This idea occurred to me as I was about to dean my oven, and had just been given two pans in horrible condition. Literally charred buildup on the outside about 1/2 cm thick, and a greasy, gunky thick layer inside. Well I tried it, and it worked! But at the time my hubby thought I was trying to burn the house down, lol. Be sure to turn on that exhaust fan and/or open all the windows! I'm a recent subscriber and have been very blessed by your channel, btw! :-)

I am still using cast iron that has been handed down in my family for generations. It is made by Wagner and there is still absolutely nothing wrong with it. Though it is not recommended to use cast iron on a glass top stove, I do daily and have never had any issues. I do have a few pieces of stainless steel pots and pans that I like too.

The best pans I have ever cooked on have been my great grandmothers cast iron from the mid 1800s. If you can find them snatch them up and never let them out of your sight! Remember to make sure your kids know the value and importance of your heritage cast iron.

Awe hunny, I love you so much...Im old enough to be your grandma.. Ive had cast iron left from older relatives I just started using it...I love it. Cast iron pans will last forever, if you have the right ones...so easy to clean. I need to get a small dutch oven (casr iron). I did not know about the iron thing....my iron levels have always been low...you are a wealth of information, How was the reunion?. Do you have a PO box?. God bless you and your family.

Teresa, from Stringfield Ridge channel suggested I check out you channel. I am glad she did! I agree with you on cast iron. However, I lost most of mine in a house fire a year ago. The water from the hoses hit the hot pans and most cracked and busted. However, God has blessed us! I have a nice collection now. Like you said yard sales and actions are great! I started using cast iron after thousands of dollars were invested in cookware. Just for it to go bad. Often times the handles would come lose. Drove me crazy. I said no more. I will only use cast iron.
One more thing... we bought a foreclosure back in September of last year. 5 1/2 acres. This is a blessing from the Lord! Been a lot of work and still is,but it’s worth it. God Bless.

I love cast iron. I have a bunch. I have skillets, enamel Dutch oven and the traditional Dutch oven . For my 1st mother's day I asked for an iron skillet. Lots of people think its an awful Mother's Day gift, but I was so happy to have it. I did have one piece destroyed …My sons knew it was ALMOST indestructible so they used a small skillet I used for eggs for target practice. It broke it in 1/2. They were scared to tell me because they know I love it. I was upset, but I just bought another one. My favorite find was a huge rusty skillet. Someone had fried fish in it and they couldn't get the smell out. I got it for a quarter. I scrubbed and seasoned it and its good as new :) I had a separate set for the camper ( this is where the traditional Dutch ovens come in.) They're great for cooking on a woodfire grill or over a campfire. Pancakes, bacon, and eggs over a wood fire is one of the best meals when camping. I made yeast dinner rolls in a Dutch oven over a campfire once. My husband also bought me a Dutch oven table.

We pick up smaller pans when we can find them and I request them as gifts. The year before last I was gifted with a cast iron Dutch oven. It’s not enameled. I’ve only cooked bread in it, I’m a little intimidated by it to be honest.

I cook almost exclusively in cast iron. I have many pieces , some of which I got when I married in 1977, some pieces were passed down to me from my grandmother and others I rescued from the rust graveyard. I would give up the 2 non stick skillets I have before my cast iron. I think most people are intimidated by the care of cast iron. I have a cast iron meatloaf pan and it makes incredible meatloaf , skillets, corn bread stick pans , dutch ovens , tea kettle , and on and on. I have several pieces of Le Crueset ( I didn’t have them when I was in my 30’s either) . I love to cook for husband / kids /grandkids /friends. I am enjoying your channel!

We have about 70 pieces of cast iron. Most is second hand and many were in really poor conditioned. All cleaned up and seasoned well. We rotate their use to keep them freshly seasoned.
Here's a tip. I have found that the used pans with a thick layer of baked on junk on the outside are easily restored by putting them in a bonfire and burning the junk off. Then simply re-season them as you described.
We simply use them all of the time. Your care tips are spot on and should be followed to a tee.

Great video! I have a story for this topic. In August I went on a date with a gentleman who wanted to cook me breakfast at his house. And all his cookware was cast iron. The food was so delicious! I had one of my grandma's cast iron pans at home for YEARS and, like you, thought it was too much effort to clean up and revive. After that wonderful breakfast cooked in cast iron, I went home and dug out that pan, cleaned it up, seasoned it and haven't gone back to my nonstick pans except when I need a bigger size. I'm keeping my eyes open for more skillets and a Dutch oven at sales. Even though that relationship didn't work, I'm sure glad it guided me to using Grandma's cast iron.

Oh, and suggestion: if you do have something stick in your cast iron pan, I just add enough water to cover it and let it simmer on the stove until it loosens itself. (If it's from meat, etc it almost makes a gravy that I sometimes pour over dry dog food as a treat).
If something is REALLY bad in the pan, I might use a little course salt and a cut potato as a scrubber, throw in some baking soda if needed, etc. And then be sure to season again after it is completely dry

The shine on that 6 inch pan is something to envy. Bet is a dream to cook in. ♥️
I know this is a year old vid, but I'd like to encourage any woman thinking of having babies to start cooking in cast iron. Your iron levels are important when you are pregnant because you will be making extra blood, not to mention a whole new person, and iron is needed in the month+ process of making red blood cells. The iron pills usually have to be taken with a stool softener because of undesirable side effect. I'd much rather get mine for free and no side effects. 🍳

I’ve always had a hard time properly seasoning my cast iron and have rusted a few myself. I have since then figured out what works for me to get that deep season, we were doing yard work after watching Steve R. cooing over a fire pit. My pan was already oiled so I tossed my skillet in the fire pit. I had a smoky flavor for a while but I haven’t needed to season it since. Best part, I didn’t smoke up my house. 😊

Thank you. I was gifted a cast iron pan for a wedding present. I’ve used it off and on for years. I learned the trick of drying it on the burner but still my seasoning wasn’t staying on the bottom of the pan. I’ve been using SOS pads to clean them that has the soap. 🤦‍♀️ That must be stripping my seasoning. I’ll get this right. Can’t wait to throw away my Paula Deen pans and never look back.

I love cast iron for all the reasons you mentioned, but it is even closer to my heart because it is so closely associated with my memories of my Mama Rosie and Mama Willie (grand and great grandmothers). They had quite a few of all sizes, and shapes, and I would give anything to have one of theirs, not sure who got them. Mama Willie even had wonderful, doublesided corn pone pans as well as the corn stick pans. Mama Rosie made the tissue thin layers of her famous 10-14 layer chocolate cakes in her cast iron pans. BTW, i use Barkeeper's Friend to clean the bottom of my pans to look new. It will definitely help you out without scrubbing, with the bottom of yiur Dutch oven, but I would test it in a small area first. It has worked for me, though, when i have burnt things in mine. :)

Love my Lodge cast iron pans! I have a 10" and 15", which are good for everyday cooking. I love the 15", even though I don't have a large family. It's great for cooking unstuffed cabbage rolls. I also have a tiny 6" (?) skillet for cooking two fried eggs just for me. As young people who set up homes in the 80s and 90s, we were sold a bill of goods with "nonstick" cookware. That is terrible stuff -- the Teflon flakes off and the thin metal warps and so it doesn't sit flat on a glass stovetop. With proper seasoning, cast iron IS nonstick! I bought a glass top for the 15" skillet on Amazon. You will need a top one day, and this top is just so cool. I do sometimes wash my cast iron with a tiny dab of dish soap, depending on what I cooked in it. And when I put the pan on the burner to dry, I set the kitchen timer for 1 minute -- to make sure I don't forget it and start a fire!

Cast iron is also excellent for making homemade caramel. Even heat distribution quickens the process and your kitchen smells like yum.

I have my great Grandma's Lodge from the 30's a chicken fryer and skillet and my mama's Griswold, I love it! I also got a non enameled dutch oven from my hubby for Christmas. Don't get a flat top stove, I broke ours as soon as we moved in, the cast iron got too hot and cracked it, so now I'm using an old plain electric, I was used to gas all my adult life. Ooops

I have a 10" and 12" CI pans that I picked up at garage sales very cheap. I was never satisfied with the 10" pan. After watching this video I checked and sure enough, it's made in Taiwan. The 12" is a Lodge. I also got the enameled Dutch oven at a close-out store for under $20 bc it had a chip on the outside handle. I also have a wok and a baking stone which also follow the same rules of seasoning and care. My baking stone is actually black and incredibly smooth from use. Same concept too about passing them down to the next generation.

Hi! First off, I LOVE your youtube channel!!! So much so, that my husband chuckles every time he walks into the living room and sees me watching your videos! I just wanted to add a few REALLY GOOD cast iron brands that are made in the USA. While they are a little on the spendy side, (and will never beat finding a $4 8in Griswold cast iron at the Goodwill) they are of MUCH better quality than Lodge. The companies are FINEX and STARGAZER. Finex is located in Portland, OR and Stargazer is located in Pennsylvania. They both ship their products as well. My husband bought me a Stargazer for my birthday since we have had trouble finding other cast iron pans in our area, and I was wanting to build on my collection, and I love it as much as my older pans! After he bought me that, we set aside our Lodge pans for later abuse during camping. Also, anyone with cast iron needs to invest in something called "The Ringer" Just look it up on amazon and you will thank me later!

I got a couple of really nice cast iron pans from the second hand store. I put them through a cycle of the the self clean oven and re-seasoned them and they are great.
    Cheers,

I bought my cast iron pans because they are oven safe and sturdy. And I can bake Chicago style deep dish pizza in them. Also, I get tired of having to brown food in a fry pan on top of the stove then having to transfer the food to a baking dish so it can go in the oven.

Love love cast iron. I use the skillets all the time. I have an old deep skillet my mother gave me (I am 66 years old) . One of the things I remember from my childhood was she baked her barbecue chicken in it. The pan was fine with a tomato base sauce. But my Grandma gave it to her. I don't know how old this pan is! I have estate finds and new lodge. Love them all. I was gifted a large lodge cast iron dutch oven. And have recently discovered dutch oven bread. So good and so easy. Lastly my husband bought me an old cast iron waffle maker and in the process of season it. To see a video on someone thst really shows how to get a good season on cast iron check out the you tube channel Boss of the Swamp. He really knows his stuff on cast iron. Thanks .

I use CI too as well as glass cooking pots and pans. I did have the most beautiful purple glass pot and my daughter dropping it while taking left overs out to the chickens. She almost cryed she was so sad she broke my pot. All of mine are from second hand store and yard sales. ❤

My husband and I have found the cleaning our cast iron with coarse kosher salt is the best way to clean it. Soaks up the grease, abrasive so it helps with scrubbing, and won’t take off your seasoning

I use my cast iron daily! I've got a pan from my mom that is old and I've found 2 griswolds in antique shops. The old griswold is hands down the best! Talk about a solid and smooth as glass pan.

I cannot cook without cast iron. I have been fortunate to find some old stuff with the smooth as glass interior, which is what I prefer. I agree, you cannot go wrong with cast iron. It will last for generations. Take care.

I have both le creuset and le chasseur and love both. Expensive but worth the money, like you said Jess, youre only paying the money once vs replacing cookware every 10 years. My favourite thing about CI is that you can do everything in one pot - brown on the stove then transfer straight to the oven - so no leaving any of the flavour behind like you do going from a normal pan to a baking dish, and less washing up!

Great video!! Love cast iron! One note that I looked for in the comments and didn't see: only the Lodge regular cast iron is made in the USA (South Pittsburgh , TN); the enameled cast iron is made in China.
Also, I want to apologize for so many comments on your videos tonight! I've been binge watching while I paint a mural in my daughter's room. Thanks for all the hard work!

I love your info on cast iron. I am so fortunate to have GRISWOLD PANS that have been handed down to me from family members , I know that they are over a 100 years old . I have seen them in old family pictures from 1910 being used over a campfire, I love love using them and have some of them hanging on the wall like you do. I have no problem using them I just try not to use soap in them. and I do not use anything in them that mite scratch when I clean them like sharp item. I love the plastic scrapers if anything gets stuck. Keep up your good vidoes I love them

I love using cast iron. Every time I use it, I see my Momma in my mind's eye cooking all her delicious meals for us when we were little (that and her Magnalite!) Lol One of her pans was her mom's that she got when she got married in the 40s. The seasoning on that pan is gorgeous!

Don’t feel bad, I did something horrible... I inherited my grandfathers cast iron skillet, I made it rusty like you did and didn’t know I could fix it and threw it away 😭😭😭 I’ve been kicking myself since I learned better. Btw I’m in MS now but was born in East TN.

Serious cooks have serious tools. I also have several cast iron pieces and I love taking care of them, I see it as part of the process of being a good cook. I also have a collection of enameled pieces from Holland, beautiful colors and the big dutch oven is my jam pan because it's heavy bottomed and non-reactive. I did splurge one year and spent Christmas money on a copper and stainless saute pan from France, also one of my favorites. TY #cookingisfun

My prized possessions are my Mamaw's 60+ yr old pans. She isn't sure if they were handed down to her or bought at small hardware store. She gave me her main one when she stopped cooking & I said I wanted hers. Then when she died I had less than 2 days to clean out her appt before locks changed. I had a mad dash to grab sentimental things & her small, personal size pans were ones I grabbed along w an enamel Dutch oven I gave her. They are in my daughter's hope chests. I also found 2 exact same cast iron pans that are pie slice cornbread pans. They are also in there.

I got a cast iron pancake pan for my 20th birthday. Loved it, now I've moved across the world and my pan is still in my basement back home .. the heaviness of it will make it tricky to transport it here. But now I have to cause you made me miss it so much 😊💜 and imagine when I get old and I can give it to my children telling them how I had to fly it across the world in my twenties 😍

I have been pondering getting a cast iron pan for a couple months now, but the main thing that is holding me back is my family eats mainly a low-oil vegan diet. I struggle with anemia, so I'd love the extra iron in my diet and I am all about buying once and having something last forever but we have learned to cook with water instead of oil (yes, it is possible) in our non-stick pan and in our enameled dutch oven (which I love) for health reasons and I don't want to commit to adding a bunch of oil back into our diet. Since I've had such good luck with our dutch oven, I've thought about trying an enameled cast iron pan instead of a normal one.
