Tell Me About Yourself - Interview answer example

  • Watch Don show you exactly how to answer "Tell Me About Yourself."
This is one of the very first videos I created, and as you can see I'm a little more tense than in my current videos, but the content is still relevant today.
Tell me about yourself is one of the toughest interview questions. This is an open-ended question, but really what the interviewer wants to hear is about your recent work experience and your journey that brought you to this point in your career. Why don't they just ask that question instead? Because they want to see where you will go with an open-ended question. Your answer to "tell me about yourself" tells the interviewer where your mind is. If you start telling him that you are a Cleveland Browns fan, then you are way off base with what he wants to hear and you have just made your first mistake.
What do you want the interviewer to know about you when you leave, your work experience or your personal interests? I'm confident their hiring decision will be based on your work experience, save your personal interests for the water cooler after you get the job.
    #tellmeaboutyourself #interviewanswerexample
Best answer to tell me about yourself:
    1. "What part of my work experience would you like me to talk about?"
    a. Now the interviewer can reply with a simple straightforward answer. Some interviewers want you to start from your first job and others only want to hear about your most recent job.
    b. If the interviewer would like you to start from your first job, assuming it has been several years since you had that job, then lightly touch on the jobs that you no longer hold, but expand on your current or most recent job experience and accomplishments.
Focus on your answer and talk about your accomplishments from your current or most recent job and lightly touch on your daily duties. These are the things an interviewer really wants to hear. Because if he thinks you were successful at your past job, then you will be successful at this job. Even if you don't feel that you accomplished anything, look deep and think of something you did that helped the company. Or better yet, describe an accomplishment that you contributed to the company, just make sure it's in the same line of work.
If you have been interviewing for jobs and not getting second interviews, it's likely that you have been giving a wrong answer to this question.

Too bad for the people who are not good at answering questions but have the ability to do the job and good attitude to the people. Why they just don't look at the resume instead of the person's ability to give the answer which pleased the interviewer. Not everybody has the ability to give the best answer but once they are on the job they are very good and hard worker.

same for me, I'm too bad when it comes to speaking yet I do believe I'm qualified.. I'm an Egyptian fresh graduate electrical power engineer and it's quite sensitive field, I got accepted in my first two jobs But after laying out terms and conditions I found these weren't suitable for me at all.. and the third interview was a decent one but guess what they never talked to me back.

Hi George - I've been struggling for 6 months to get a job. I'm a highly experienced people manager but I just couldn't get past interview stage. It hadn't occurred to me to try UA-cam, but I did & I found you.
I watched your videos, took notes, wrote scripts, rehearsed out loud for 3 solid days before an interview with another company.

    Thank you a thousand times!

Just once, I'd like to see someone do a video where the "right" answers are not all "Sales and Service" related. If you want to hire someone to save you money and increase revenue, then you interview "Sales", "Marketing", and "Business Manager" types who have that background and job experience.
The big problem is that employers are using the same structured questions for the janitor, copy/mailroom guy, and computer tech ( example from the video ). Those guys shouldn't be worrying about how to save your business money or increase revenue, there is specific education and job experience for just that purpose.

not at all. if anything lying will get you dismissed and potentially in court. instead, be prepared, that's the key. the interview is to find out more about you as an individual and whether you with fit in with the company's ethos. additionally it's an opportunity to seek clarification (by both parties). remember your application has got you to the interview; now sell yourself.

    • @alexmag5735
      @alexmag5735 7 років тому +7

Mark Lee What are you talking about? We all know car mechanics and electricians who perfectly sell themself. Unfortunately they are quite useless at their workplace.
Why do you wanna work with us? The truth is for the money. The truth is people don't care about your company They just sent 1000 resumes everywhere but they do not have freedom to tell truth because HR just a barrier to get the job. The problem is that complex questions important for CEO position asked even if you looking for the process worker or cleaner job. Selling yourself telling nothing about professional level. Thiat's why we have very nice people at their workplaces and they still selling themselves instead of doing their job. Because all they can do very well - selling themselves.
      Sorry my English grammar.

I'll not mention TWO previous students one who worked for a London University, the other a global pharmaceutical who were dismissed for providing false claims of education and then taken to court over this. I'll leave you to it if you're so sensitive about the information you provide and are not able to accept supporting statements from others.

I wasn't helping people for money or doing something else to get experience, I just focused on school. do not feel discourages, one piece of advice is to do an internship or volunteer at a non-profit organization, you can include this experience on your CV as professional experience and make a difference :) it helps you network also

its relative ...if u got no exp talk about ur projects at school and your qualification.... if u got little qualification talk about how u r equiping ur self for the current role and how u fit in... gues we have to apply what hes saying to our respective situations

That would be so awesome, the interviewer would be like am sorry but who's your friend and I'll be like it's okay please continue his just here for a shoulder to lean on kinda like how a boxer has a coach or a student has a teacher. ..🐹

How do you answer this question if you're making a career change from an industry and with a degree that's not relevant and maybe even too advanced for the job? Let's suppose leaving out the degree you achieved would leave too many questions unanswered like "what did you do in this time?" because you left a part or fulltime job to focus on finishing your degree.

With the increase in job applicants and "savvy" interviewee's, interviewers aren't going to waste their time with ambiguous questions. Clear and concise, it's from both sides. It's about what you're currently doing, why you're changing and what you're going to offer you potential new employer. Nobody wants to waste time.

I always thought that "Tell me about you" was in regards of what kind of person you are. But it is focused on your education and work experience... does that mean that the company has no idea about me? That they have not bothered to read my CV and they need me to explain it?... I can understand that they want to see how I articulate and explain my career so far but it seems unfair that I have to do all the research and be expected to know everything about the company beforehand and they can just sit back and throw at me "Tell me about yourself" Well, I sent you my CV didn't I? Anyway, I just really dislike this position of power they hold. Interviews should be of equal individuals, not like the company is doing a favour to the candidate, but like a mutually beneficial work relationship, where both sides know each other and appreciate each other at the same level.

I have no real note worthy achievements just yet, and honestly feel like ive wasted tooo much of life at crappy dead end jobs that just served to pay bills, and be flexible with school schedule. anyone in similar cases please help!. lol

Tashie Snower ***Tashie, I just saw this and wanted to respond to you with my opinion. One could say don't introduce yourself to the interviewer b/c they already know you are coming in and have your application. I totally understand that. But let me say this... Although they do know you have an appointment to interview, I feel it would be good etiquette to formally introduce yourself and shake the person(s) hand(s). Last point - my son is an actor. As he was entering his career he was chosen for a NASCAR commercial with Jeff Gordon. As he got on set Mr. Gordon walked up to my son, extended his hand and said, 'Hi Josh. I'm Jeff Gordon." Impressive. All the actors who he has worked with, who are well known do the same. All I am saying is maybe you were selected for the interview from your application/resume and talked on the phone but you haven't met them in person.... That's my opinion. I would do it. Hope you get the job you desire.

You are not a failure, but I'd encourage you to try to push towards a goal in order to achieve something. Work on a project, pursue a skill, etc.

It upsets me greatly that interviewers use trick and misleading questions. Such as, tell me about yourself. Tell me what you didn't or dont like about your current or last job. It upsets me greatly that they judge you because you are nerves and confused by their unclear and misleading question's. They should ask tell me about your last or current or just job experience. The second question should never be brought up,because they dont want to hear anything negative. Lets all be honest there is always someone or something, we dont like about the job we have or had. If you say something negative in a interview you wont get the job, so there asking you to lie which denotes lack of good morals. That is why in self imployed.
